Reading Passage
Sophia had always been a careful person. She planned her days meticulously, and her friends often admired how organized she was. One Friday morning, however, things didn’t go as smoothly as usual. She woke up late because her alarm hadn’t worked, and she had to get ready quickly. Normally, she liked to dress neatly and arrive punctually, but that day she left her apartment in a hurry, still holding her breakfast.
Outside, the weather was terribly cold. The wind blew strongly, and people hurried along the street with worried faces. Sophia walked fast, trying not to slip on the icy pavement. Suddenly, she heard a loud crash. A man on a bicycle had fallen near the corner. Without thinking, she ran immediately to help him. She spoke to him calmly, checked that he wasn’t seriously hurt, and helped him stand up. The man thanked her warmly, saying she was “a very kind and brave lady.”
When Sophia finally reached her office, she was thirty minutes late. Her boss, Mr. Harris, looked strict, but when he heard what had happened, he smiled gently. “You may have arrived late,” he said, “but you started the day beautifully.”
Sophia felt relieved. Sometimes, she thought, being kind mattered more than being perfectly on time.
