Our Virtual Reality Characters

Leo

I play a great VR game with my classmates every weekend. In the game, my character looks like a large brown bear. He is very big and heavy. At first, I wanted a character that was a fast runner, but now I love my bear. He cannot run fast, but he has a special skill. He makes sick players feel better. My friend's character flies, but I prefer walking on the ground. We always have a lot of fun together.

Sam

My VR character is a little robot. He is short and light, so he can hide easily. He wears strange space clothes and a large metal hat. I usually play this game to meet new people online. My character is not very good at fighting, but he is great at making safe places. He builds tall bridges and houses for other players very quickly. I hope to get a new, bigger character next year, but I really enjoy this one now.

Toby

In my favourite VR game, my character looks exactly like me. He just wears jeans and a t-shirt. I didn't want to give him a heavy helmet because I want to see his face. He has a pet dog in the game that follows him everywhere. My character has magic skills. He can make fire and light up dark rooms. He cannot fly yet, but he is learning. I hope he can travel through the air soon!

Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: Leo says he plays the game with his "classmates", which is a synonym for school friends.

8 B - Reason: Sam describes his robot character as "little", "short", and "light", meaning he is very small.

9 C - Reason: Toby says his character cannot fly yet, but he hopes he will "travel through the air soon".

10 A - Reason: Leo mentions that "at first", he "wanted a character that was a fast runner" instead of the bear.

11 B - Reason: Sam says his character is "great at making safe places" and "builds tall bridges and houses".

12 C - Reason: Toby says his character "just wears jeans and a t-shirt", which are normal everyday clothes.

13 A - Reason: Leo's character looks like a "large brown bear", which is an animal.

    Online Coding Club

    The Game Designers

Do you have a lot of new ideas? In this group, you can use your imagination to design fun computer games. You will decide what the characters look like and pick the best colours for your websites. We know that thinking of ideas is fast, but writing code takes time. So, you don't need to worry about numbers or difficult maths here. If you want to build something amazing to share with your friends, this is the perfect place for you. Come and join us today!

    The App Builders

Are you good at understanding how things work? This group is for teenagers who love numbers. If you think maths is fun, you will enjoy our club. You will learn how to build useful apps that people can use on their smartphones. Our teachers will show you how to solve difficult puzzles. You will work on your own most of the time to finish your projects. We don't make computer games in this group, but you will learn very important skills for the future.

    The Code Checkers

Do you always look carefully at your work? Sometimes, a website or an app doesn't work, and we need to find out why. In this group, you will look at lines of code to find mistakes. You have to work slowly and carefully, but it feels great when you finally repair the problem! You will also help beginners when they don't understand something. We don't use mobile phones in the classroom, but you can learn to fix computer software.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: Text A says you can "pick the best colours for your websites".

      Sharing Personal Information Safely

      David

I love taking pictures when I go out with my family. But I never let people on the internet know exactly where I am. I always turn off the place settings on my mobile phone before I take a photo. If you leave it on, strangers can see your street. I also never wear my school uniform in videos. I don't want anyone to find out the name of my school. It is better to be safe and keep these details private.

      Emma

I talk to a lot of people in online games, but they do not know my real name. I always use a fake word instead. It is also very important to have a strong password. I change mine every month so nobody can guess it. Some of my classmates share their passwords with their best friends, but I never do that. If someone else knows your secret word, they can read all your private messages.

      Lucas

I use social media to share fun stories, but I am very careful. I only accept friend requests from people I already know in real life. Some kids want to have thousands of followers, but I prefer to keep my group small. I also wait a few minutes before I post any pictures. I ask myself if the photo is safe for everyone to see. Once you put a picture on the internet, you can never really delete it.

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Lucas says he only accepts friend requests from people he already knows "in real life".
