Our Best Friends

Tom

Alex is my best friend at school. We both have big brown eyes, but we look very different. Alex is quite short, and he has straight, dark hair. He cannot see the board in the classroom clearly, so he has to wear round glasses. He never wears them when we play football, though! Alex also loves his big red jumper. He wears it every single day, even when the weather is warm. He always has a big smile on his face.

Sara

My best friend Maria sits next to me in class. When we were little children, she had very blonde hair. Now, she is a teenager and her hair is dark brown. She went to the hairdresser last week and now her hair is really short, too! I think it looks great. Maria is not very tall, but she has very long legs and runs fast. She doesn't wear glasses like I do. She has lovely blue eyes and small ears.

Ben

David is my best friend. He is definitely the tallest boy in our year at school. I am quite short, so I always look up when I talk to him! He has blonde hair that is very curly. It is difficult for him to brush it in the mornings. David does not wear any special clothes. He just wears our normal school uniform. He has green eyes, but my eyes are blue. We look completely different, but we are great friends.

    How to Introduce Yourself Confidently

    Alex

When you walk into your new classroom, the best thing you can do is smile. A big smile shows people that you are friendly and kind. If you see someone, say hello and tell them your name. You can also ask them a simple question. For example, you can ask about their favourite school subject or what music they like. People love talking about themselves! If you look happy and listen carefully, you will easily make some new friends on your first day.

    Bella

It is sometimes hard to find the right words to say. A great idea is to take a special object with you to your new class. You can put a colourful pencil case or a book about your hobby on your desk. When other students see it, they will want to know more about it. They will come to you and ask you questions. This makes talking very easy! You can also look for students who are reading and ask them about their stories.

    Chris

You do not have to speak all the time to make new friends. If you feel shy, you can use the school break time to meet people. Go outside and look for a group of students playing a sport, like football. Just ask if you can play with them. When you play a game together, you have fun without talking too much. After the game, it is much easier to say hello and introduce yourself to your new teammates.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Chris suggests going outside and looking for a group of students playing a sport.

8 A - Reason: Alex tells you to ask students about what music they like or their favourite subject.

9 B - Reason: Bella says it is a great idea to take a special object with you to your new class.

11 C - Reason: Chris says that you do not have to speak all the time and can play a game without talking too much.

12 B - Reason: Bella suggests that you can look for students who are reading and ask them about their stories.

13 B - Reason: Bella explains that if you bring an interesting object, other students will come to you and ask you questions.

           A Ben   B Katy   C Tom

13   Who thinks a class monitor should be good at listening to other students?

           A Ben   B Katy   C Tom

What makes a good class monitor?

      Ben

I think a good class monitor must be very organized. They need to help our teacher put books away and keep the room tidy. A monitor must also remember important dates, like when we must give our homework to the teacher. I am not very brave when I speak to big groups, but I like helping people. I hope my classmates choose me to be the monitor next year. I always listen carefully to the teacher's instructions.

      Katy

A class monitor needs to be brave. They must not feel shy when they stand up and speak to the whole class. My best friend is very funny, but I don't think a monitor needs to tell jokes. A good monitor must ask students to stop talking and follow the school rules. Sometimes, my classmates get angry when someone tells them what to do. But a monitor has to do this job well.

      Tom

For me, a great class monitor is a kind person who is a good listener. When two students have a problem and feel angry with each other, the monitor should listen to both of them and help. It is also important for the monitor to be funny. School can be tiring, so someone who makes us laugh is great. I am not very tidy, so I couldn't be a monitor! But I always follow the rules.

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: Ben says a monitor must "remember important dates".

8 B - Reason: Katy says a monitor must "not feel shy when they stand up and speak". Text A has a trap because Ben says he is not brave when he speaks.

9 C - Reason: Tom says "someone who makes us laugh is great". Text B has a trap because Katy mentions her friend is funny, but a monitor doesn't need to tell jokes.

10 A - Reason: Ben explains the monitor needs to "keep the room tidy". Text C has a trap because Tom says he is not very tidy.

11 C - Reason: Tom says when two students "feel angry with each other, the monitor should listen to both of them and help".

12 B - Reason: Katy says a good monitor must ask students to "follow the school rules". Text C has a trap because Tom says he follows the rules, but not that a monitor must tell others to do it.

13 C - Reason: Tom says a great class monitor is "a good listener" to other students. Text A has a trap because Ben says he listens to the teacher, not other students.
