Our Energy-Saving Habits

Toby

I always try to save water at home. My friends take long, hot showers, but I wash very quickly. I only stay in the bathroom for five minutes! I also turn off the tap when I brush my teeth. My parents are very happy with me. Because of my habits, our water bills are much lower now, and they keep more money in the bank. Sometimes my sister leaves the water running, and I always tell her to stop. It is an easy way to help the planet.

Sonia

My family calls me the 'light police'. I hate it when people leave lights on in empty rooms. Every evening, I walk around our house and turn them off. It makes me really angry when my younger brother plays outside but leaves his TV on! I actually prefer quiet, dark rooms. I usually read my book next to the window before the sun goes down. It is very relaxing, and I don't need a lamp. We all need to save electricity!

Leo

I save electricity in a different way. Many teenagers sit inside and play on their computers all day. I think this wastes too much energy. I prefer to play football in the park with my friends until it gets dark. Also, I never turn on the heating in my bedroom during winter. I just wear a thick jumper and warm socks inside the house. I feel very comfortable! I take warm showers, but I never use electricity to make my room hot.

    Meet Our Young Community Gardeners

    Liam

If you visit the community garden, you will see Liam. He grows the biggest pumpkins in the town! Liam likes everything to be perfect. He keeps his part of the garden very tidy. You will not find any dead leaves there. Liam loves school, and he uses maths to help him. He measures his plants with a ruler every week to see how much they grow. He also works hard to keep hungry insects away from his beautiful vegetables.

    Sofia

Sofia has the most colourful space in the whole garden. If you want to learn about flowers, you should ask her. She is very friendly and loves chatting with anyone who visits. Sofia does not grow food to eat. Instead, she plants special flowers because she wants to help birds and bees. Her garden is sometimes a bit messy, but she says that is good for the animals. Come and say hello to Sofia this weekend!

    Ben

You can easily find Ben in the garden, but you have to wake up early! He likes to water his plants before his school lessons start. Ben grows lots of tomatoes and potatoes. He is learning to be a chef, so he takes his vegetables home to cook for his family. He often makes nice soups or pizzas. Ben is quiet and doesn't talk much while he works. Working in Nature

      Emma

Every Saturday, I plant flowers in our town park with a local club. My family often visits the park, but I do this work with my friends. I always feel very happy when people walk past and say nice things about my beautiful flowers. It makes me feel confident. I also learn the names of many interesting plants. I must water the plants carefully so they can grow into big and strong trees.

      Lucas

I clean the beach near my house every weekend. When I started, I felt tired quickly. I really thought the work was too hard. Now, I feel very confident because my arms are much stronger. I can carry heavy bags of rubbish easily. I always find lots of empty food boxes on the sand. I love working near the sea. I often watch the sea birds, but I don't know much about them.

      Sophia

I grow vegetables on a small farm with my parents and my brother. Working outside together makes me feel very confident. We grow lots of tomatoes and carrots. We always give our extra food to our neighbours. They love it! I usually wear old clothes because the farm is quite dirty. In the summer, we need to bring water from the river for the vegetables. After a long day, we sometimes go to the beach to relax.

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Sophia says she grows vegetables "with my parents and my brother". Text A has a trap because Emma says her family visits the park, but she works with friends.

8 B - Reason: Lucas says "my arms are much stronger". Text A has a trap because Emma talks about plants growing into "strong trees".

9 A - Reason: Emma says "I also learn the names of many interesting plants". Text B has a trap because Lucas watches birds, but says he doesn't "know much about them".

10 B - Reason: Lucas says "When I started... I really thought the work was too hard." Text C mentions a "long day", but does not say the work was too hard.

11 C - Reason: Sophia says "We always give our extra food to our neighbours". Text B has a trap about finding "food boxes" on the beach.

12 A - Reason: Emma feels happy when people "say nice things" about her flowers.

13 B - Reason: Lucas says he loves "working near the sea" and cleans the beach. Text C has a trap because Sophia gets water from the river and goes to the beach to relax, not to work.
