    Secret Anniversary Cakes

    Lily

My parents' anniversary was last week. I decided to make a big chocolate cake for them. Because they were at home all day, it was really hard to keep it a secret! I had to mix everything quickly while they were in the garden. I dropped flour everywhere and made a terrible mess in the kitchen. Luckily, I washed everything before they came inside. I couldn't put the cake in our fridge, so I asked my friendly neighbour to keep it in hers!

    Mark

I wanted to surprise my parents with a nice fruit cake for their anniversary. I am too young to go to the supermarket alone, so my older sister helped me buy the butter and eggs secretly. When I started cooking, I saw that we didn't have any sugar. I didn't want to stop, so I used some honey instead. It tasted great! My parents were very happy with the cake. My mum said it was the best present ever.

    Sofia

My parents went to work on their anniversary, so I had the house to myself. I didn't know how to bake, so I watched a short video on my phone. The first time, I left the lemon cake in the cooker for too long and it became black! I quickly threw it away and started again. I finally finished the second cake just five minutes before my parents walked through the front door. It was a very close call!

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 B - Reason: Mark says his "older sister helped me buy the butter and eggs."

8 C - Reason: Sofia left her first cake in the cooker too long and it became black, so she "started again" (made it twice).

10 C - Reason: Sofia didn't know how to bake, so she "watched a short video on my phone."

11 A - Reason: Lily says she dropped flour everywhere and "made a terrible mess in the kitchen" (left it very dirty).

12 B - Reason: Mark forgot to buy sugar, so he "used some honey instead" (a different sweet food).

13 A - Reason: Lily says her parents "were at home all day," so she cooked while they were in the garden. (Sofia's parents were at work).

Advice on supporting a nervous friend

      The Day Before

Your friend might feel very scared the day before their music concert. You can help them feel ready. Do not practice the songs together. Instead, invite them to your house to watch a funny movie. This helps them forget about the concert. You should also tell them to pack their bag early. They need to put their music notes and concert clothes in it. Then they can sleep well and wake up happy.

      Just Before the Show

When you wait behind the stage with your friend, they might shake or feel sick. Give them a bottle of water to drink. Sometimes a sweet snack like a banana or some chocolate is a good idea. Do not talk about the difficult parts of their music. Tell them to take long, slow breaths. You can count to ten together. Say kind words and tell your friend that they will play beautifully.

      During and After

When your friend walks on the stage, you must sit in the front row. Make sure they can look at you. Give them a big smile before they start playing. This shows you are there for them. You do not need to shout loudly. After the concert finishes, go and find them quickly. You can give them a small present, like some nice flowers. Tell them you loved the music, even if they made a mistake.
