Our first day at a new school

Leo

I felt very nervous on my first morning. The school is so big! I was sure I was going to walk into the wrong classroom. I tried to find my history class, but I went the wrong way. A kind teacher saw me and walked with me to the right room. During the afternoon break, I didn't want to be in the noisy playground. I went into the library. It was lovely and quiet there. I read a book until it was time for my next lesson.

Maya

My family moved to a new town last month, so I had to change schools. I didn't have any friends there, and I was really sad about that. I thought I would be alone all day. But in my first science class, I sat next to a girl called Anna. We talked about our favourite music. She was very friendly. When the bell rang for lunch, she asked me to sit with her in the school café. I felt so happy after that!

Sam

Before my first day, I felt sick. My older brother went to the same school, and he always had lots of homework. I was worried that the work would be too difficult for me. I talked to my brother, and he told me to just listen carefully to the teachers. He was right. The teachers spoke slowly and explained everything very well. The maths lesson was actually really easy! I feel much better about going to school now.

How to stay calm for your math exam

    Tip 1: Sleep Well

You need a lot of energy for a big math exam. It is very important to sleep for at least eight hours. Do not study late at night. You must turn off your phone or computer an hour before you go to bed. Looking at screens is bad for your eyes and keeps you awake. Before you go to sleep, put your pencils, ruler, and calculator in your school bag. Then you will not feel worried about finding them in the morning.

    Tip 2: Eat Smart

Food is important for your brain. On the morning of your math test, you should eat a healthy breakfast. Do not eat a lot of sweet things like chocolate or cake. They give you energy for a short time, but then you will feel very tired. You should eat eggs or fruit instead. You also need to drink lots of water. You can bring a small bottle of water into the exam room with you. It will help you think clearly.

    Tip 3: Relax Your Mind

You must take a break from your math books before the exam. If you study for too many hours, your brain will feel full. Close your books and do something different. You can go outside and walk in the park. A short walk in the fresh air will help you feel calm. You can also play with your pet or talk to a good friend. When you sit down in the exam room, take three deep breaths before you start writing.

      Winning a school prize

      Leo

I love drawing, but I never thought my picture was special. Last month, my art teacher told me to put it in the school competition. When they called my name at the prize giving, I couldn't believe it! I walked to the front of the hall, and my parents looked so happy. My mum even cried a little. I won a big box of expensive paints. Now, I feel sure that I want to study art when I leave school.

      Maya

My friend Sara and I spent three weeks making a model of the moon. We showed it at the school science competition. We were very nervous when the headteacher looked at it. Later, he told everyone that we were the winners! We walked on stage together to get our prize. It was a beautiful book about space. I felt so proud to share this special moment with my best friend. Next year, we will try to win again!

      Toby

I love running, and my dream was to win the school sports prize. My older brother won it two years ago, so I wanted to do the same. I ran in the park every evening after dinner to get faster. On the day of the race, I ran as fast as I could and finished first! The headteacher gave me a wonderful silver cup. I put it on the desk in my bedroom, so I can see it every day.
