Advice for students on what to say to friends
The Honest Answer
Sometimes your friends want to go to the park, but you have school work. The best thing is to tell the truth. You can say, "I really need to get good marks in this subject, so I must finish my work first." Good friends will always understand this. You do not have to say no completely. Just tell them you can meet later. Say, "I can come out in an hour when my work is done." This way, everyone is happy!
The Family Rule
It can be hard when friends ask you to play video games instead of studying. If you find it difficult to say no, you can talk about your parents. You can say, "My mum and dad are very strict about school. I have to finish everything before dinner." Your friends will not be upset with you because it is a family rule. Then, you can make a plan for Saturday or Sunday. Tell them you have lots of free time at the weekend.
The Team Idea
When friends call you to go out, you do not have to stay at home alone. You can invite them to your house! Tell your friends, "I have a lot of maths to do. Why don't you come here?" You can sit at the kitchen table and help each other with the difficult questions. When you work as a team, you can finish much faster. After that, you can watch a film or play a game together as a great prize for your hard work.

A great surprise
Leo
I am really happy with my maths result. I missed three days of school because I had a bad cold. I thought I was going to fail the exam. Luckily, my classmate Tom came to my house. He helped me study for the test. When I looked at the paper, I knew how to do the maths problems. I answered every question on the page. I could not believe it when I saw my high grade! It was a great surprise.
Maya
I had to do a big history project at home. It was not a normal test. I was very worried because I could not find my notebook. I lost all the information I wrote in class. I tried to remember everything, but it was hard. I also drew some maps and coloured them. My teacher gave me a fantastic grade. He said my writing was fine, but he really loved my pictures! Usually, I work with a friend, but I did this alone.
Sam
English is my favourite subject, and I usually get the best marks in the class. But last week, the test was very difficult. The time went so quickly. I had to leave the last two questions empty because the bell rang. I was so sad. I used to draw pictures on my tests when I was younger, but I didn't this time. Yesterday, the teacher gave our papers back. I got a really high score! Every answer I wrote was completely right.

School clubs for shy speakers
Storytellers
Do you feel nervous when you talk in front of your class? The Storytellers club is a great place to start. Every week, we give you a short story to read. You can practise reading it aloud in a small group of three or four students. It is very quiet and friendly. Nobody will laugh if you make a mistake. At the end of the year, you can choose to read a poem to parents, but you do not have to do this.
Future Debaters
If you have strong opinions but feel too shy to say them, join Future Debaters! In this club, we choose an interesting topic every week. For example, we talk about school rules or the environment. You will learn how to stand up and explain your ideas clearly. We also practise answering questions from other students. Next month, we are going to travel to another school for a big competition. You will need to speak in front of lots of people there!
Video Creators
Some students hate standing in front of a big room. If you are one of them, Video Creators is for you. In our club, you do not need to look at people when you speak. Instead, you learn how to talk to a camera. We teach you how to make short videos about your hobbies. You can record your speech many times until you are happy with it. Later, we show you how to add music and share the video on our school website.
