How to organize your digital school files and folders

File names

When you save your school work on your computer, you must give it a good name. Do not just call your document ‘homework’ or ‘science’. You will not remember what it is later! You should use long names for your files. Write the subject, the topic, and the date. For example, write ‘maths_numbers_12may’. This makes it very fast to find your work when your teacher asks for it. Also, remember to write your own name in the file name if you need to email it to your teacher.

Subject folders

You need a clean computer screen to study well. You should make a different folder for every school subject. Make one for English, one for history, and one for art. When you finish a new document, do not leave it on your screen. Put it in the right folder immediately. Some computers let you change the colours of your folders. You can make your maths folder blue and your history folder red. This is a fun way to find your school subjects quickly when you are in a hurry.

Deleting and saving

Computers can become full of old pictures and documents that you do not need. Every month, you should look at your files and delete the bad ones. Move them to the trash and empty it. This gives your computer more space to work well. Sometimes, computers break and you lose your homework. Because of this, you must always save your most important files in two places. You can keep them on your computer and also save them on a little USB stick to take to school.

    Reading e-books for literature class

    Lucas

I started using e-books for my literature class last year. I have to read a lot of old stories, and some words are very difficult. With an e-book, I can just touch a word to find out what it means. It is much faster than using a real dictionary! Also, regular books are quite expensive, but many e-books on the internet are free. I only read at my desk at home, though. I prefer not to bring my tablet to school because it is heavy.

    Maya

My literature teacher gives us lots of reading homework every week. I share a bedroom with my sister, so I often read when she is sleeping. The screen on my e-book reader glows in the dark, so I do not need a lamp. The best thing is that I can change how the letters look. I usually make them bigger because it is easier for my eyes. Sometimes, my friends ask to borrow my e-books, but I only like keeping them on my own device.

    Toby

For our literature class, we read books by famous writers from the past. Before, I often waited a long time to get these books from the school library. Now, I can find and download them online in just one minute. I really enjoy the sound feature on my e-reader. I can listen to the story while I walk to school in the mornings. I like making small notes on the page when I read, but my e-reader does not let me do that easily.
