Getting to school without pollution

Leo

I walk to school every morning. My house is near a very busy road, but I do not walk next to the cars. I choose a longer way through a large park. The air is very clean there, and I love looking at the trees. It is quiet and peaceful. Walking in the fresh air is great for my body. When I arrive at school, I feel very awake and ready for my first lesson. I am happy I don't use a car.

Mia

I ride my bicycle to school every day. My dad cycles with me because the roads are quite busy. He always tells me to wear my helmet to stay safe. We stop at all the red lights and ride slowly. I love cycling, but I wish our town had special paths just for bicycles. It is scary when big buses drive too close to us. But riding my bike is much better for the planet than driving in my dad's car.

Tariq

Last year, I took the bus to school. But now, I walk with four of my classmates. We meet at the corner of my street at eight o'clock. We talk and laugh all the way to school. It is much more fun than sitting on a bus! Every Friday, we bring small plastic bags with us. We pick up old bottles and paper from the street while we walk. It feels good to keep our town clean and help the environment.

Guidelines for starting a school garden

    Planning the space

Before you start your school garden, you need a good place. It must be sunny because vegetables need a lot of light to grow big. First, take a piece of paper and draw a picture of your garden. You should write down where every vegetable will go. Do not buy seeds yet! It is a good idea to talk to the cafeteria chef first. Ask him which vegetables students like eating the most. Then you can choose the right plants.

    Looking after the plants

When you put your seeds in the ground, the real work begins. You must visit the garden every day. Vegetables need water, especially when the weather is hot. But be careful not to give them too much water, or they will die. You should also look for insects on the leaves. Some insects are bad for plants. You do not need to buy expensive tools. You can use old spoons and cups from your kitchen to move the dirt.

    Picking the vegetables

It is very exciting when your vegetables are ready! You should pick them in the early morning because they taste better then. Do not wait until the afternoon. You must wash your hands before you touch the food. Then, pull the carrots and tomatoes from the dirt carefully. After that, you must clean the vegetables with cold water. Finally, put them in a big box and take them straight to the cafeteria. The cooks will make a lovely lunch!

      Cleaning up the school playground

      Leo

Last Saturday, I helped to clean our school playground. My older brother came with me because he wanted to help too. We picked up lots of sweet wrappers and paper. Under a big tree, I saw a blue winter hat. It belonged to a boy in my class, so I gave it back to him on Monday. We worked for three hours and I felt very tired when we finished. But it was great to see the playground looking so nice.

      Mia

I joined the playground clean-up on Sunday morning. It was quite cold and it started to rain a bit, but we didn't stop working. I was surprised to see so many plastic water bottles on the grass. We filled five big bags with them! Because of this, I now bring my own glass bottle from home every day. My dad says it is a good idea. Next week, we are going to clean the park near my house.

      Sam

Our class cleaned the school playground last Friday afternoon. First, we collected all the rubbish. I didn't feel tired because I was having fun with my friends. After that, we put some beautiful yellow flowers in the ground near the school door. Before we went home, I took some photos of the clean playground with my phone. Our teacher put them on the school website. Now everyone can see our hard work!
