Being Yourself Online
Be Real
Do you look at other teenagers online and think their lives are perfect? Remember that people usually only share the happy or exciting things. They do not post photos when they are bored or tired! Many apps also change how people look so their faces seem different. You do not have to do this. It is completely fine to share normal pictures of your everyday life. You do not need to look like a film star. Just be yourself!
Numbers Are Just Numbers
Sometimes you might feel sad if your photo does not get many hearts or comments. But your online profile is not the real you! You do not need hundreds of people to follow you to be a great person. Think about your true friends. These are the people you laugh with at school or sit next to on the bus. Those real-world moments are much more important than a number on a screen. Your friends like you for who you are.
Live Your Real Life
How much time do you spend looking at your profile every day? It is a good idea to put your phone away sometimes. Leave it in your bedroom and go outside! You can learn a new sport, read a book, or help your parents cook dinner. The internet is fun, but your real life happens away from the screen. When you spend time doing different hobbies, you will feel much happier. You are more than just a picture on the internet!

My custom emoji
Sam
I wanted an emoji that really looks like me, so I asked my older brother for some help. We made a funny face with big eyes and crazy hair. I usually send this emoji to my friends when I am surprised or when I don’t understand our homework. My friends always laugh when they see it. My sister wants to make one too, but I think mine is the best. It is fun to use my own face in messages!
Lily
Last week, my parents gave me a new tablet for my birthday. The first thing I did was draw a sticker of myself. I love being outside, so I drew myself in my football kit with a ball. I always send this sticker to my friends when I want to ask them to play in the park. My teammates really like it. Now, I want to draw special stickers for all the players in my football club!
Ben
I spend all my free time reading, so I decided to make an emoji of myself holding a big book. I also wear big blue glasses in the picture. It was quite hard to make the colours look perfect, so it took me hours to do it. I don't send this emoji to my school friends. Instead, I use it in messages to my grandparents. They live far away, and they love seeing my little cartoon face!

Social media tips for teenagers
Real Life First
Do you look at social media and feel sad? Remember, people only share their best moments online. They do not show their bad days. When you feel worried about your page, put your phone in another room. Go outside, play a sport, or draw a picture. Real hobbies are better than phone screens! You do not need to check your page every hour. Try to use the internet for just 30 minutes a day. You will quickly feel much happier.
Happy Following
Sometimes, you see photos of famous people and think your life is boring. If an online page makes you feel bad, you should stop following it! You are the boss of your phone. Instead, find pages that make you smile. You can follow groups that share funny videos of animals. You can also look for people who teach you how to make new things. Your online world must be a happy place. If a person is unkind to you, tell your parents.
True Pictures
Lots of young people want their online photos to look amazing. They use computer programs to change their faces. But you are beautiful just the way you are! You do not need to use these programs.
