Smartphone rules at our schools

Leo

In my school, we cannot use our smartphones at all. We have to leave them inside our school bags all day. At first, I was quite angry about this rule. I wanted to play mobile games at break time! But now I think it is actually a good idea. My friends and I always go outside and play football together. It is much better than looking at a small screen. I just wait until I walk home to call my parents.

Maya

We can use our phones during break time, but only in the school library. We must use them for reading or checking our homework. We cannot play games or watch funny videos. If a teacher sees you with a phone in the playground or the hall, they take it from you until the end of the day! It is hard sometimes because I love texting my friends, but I understand the rule. We need a quiet place to do our work.

Toby

My school lets us use our smartphones in the playground during breaks. I usually put my headphones on and listen to music, or I send text messages to my mum and dad. There is one very important rule, though. We must never take photos or make videos of other students. I think that is a fair rule. However, break time is sometimes very noisy. A lot of students do not use headphones and play their music very loudly!

Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Toby says he sends text messages to his "mum and dad". (Leo calls his parents, but only when he walks home, not at school).

8 A - Reason: Leo says he was "angry about this rule" at first, but now he thinks "it is actually a good idea".

9 B - Reason: Maya explains that if a teacher sees you with a phone in the playground, "they take it from you".

10 C - Reason: Toby says that break time is "very noisy" because students play music loudly.

11 B - Reason: Maya says they must use phones only for "reading or checking our homework".

12 A - Reason: Leo has to leave his phone "inside our school bags all day".

13 C - Reason: Toby explains that students must never "take photos or make videos".

    The new School-Connect app

    Homework List

You must look at this part of the app every day after school. Here, you can see all the homework your teachers give you. When you finish a maths or science task, you should click the big green button. This shows your teacher that your work is ready. When you are ill and miss school, don't worry. You can look at the calendar on this page to find the homework from last week. You will never miss a lesson again!

    Parent Page

This part of the app is only for mothers and fathers. You can see when your child needs to give their homework to the teacher. You do not need to look at the app every day. The app will send an email to your computer when the teacher adds new homework. You can also send a text message to your child's teachers here. This is a great way to ask questions about the school rules or your child's marks.

    App Help

Sometimes you might have problems with the new school app. If you cannot remember your password, you cannot open the app. When this happens, you must ask the school secretary for a new password. Do not ask your teacher. You can use the app on a computer, but it is also easy to put it on your mobile phone. Just go to the store on your phone and search for 'School-Connect'. It is free to download and use!

    Answer Key & Explanations

12 C - Reason: App Help explains that if you forget your password and "cannot open the app", you must ask the secretary.

      Our Math Group Chat

      Leo

I often do my math homework late at night. When I cannot find the answer to a difficult problem, I use our group chat. I take a photo of my notebook and send it to my friends. They look at my numbers and tell me where my mistake is. It is much easier than waiting for the teacher the next day! Sometimes we share funny pictures too, but we always finish our work first. The chat is really useful.

      Sara

Math is my hardest subject, and I used to feel very nervous about it. Now, if I do not understand something, I ask my group chat right after school. I do not like typing math problems because it takes a long time. So, I always send short voice messages to my friends. They listen and explain the steps to me. Because of their help, I feel much happier about math now. We are a great team!

      Toby

I am quite good at math, so I usually help my friends in our chat. When we have a big math test, I organize a group video call. We all study together on our computers. I really enjoy explaining the difficult problems to them. When I teach my friends, I actually remember the math better myself! But I get angry if someone just asks me for the final answer. Everyone must try to do the problem first.
