Audiobooks and washing up

Tom

I hate washing the dishes. It is the most boring job in the house! But now, I always listen to audiobooks while I do it. I choose stories by funny writers. They make me laugh out loud. With a good story, the job feels much faster. I finish before I know it! I never wear my headphones near the water because I do not want to break them. Instead, I put a small speaker on the kitchen table.

Sara

In my family, my brother and I wash the cups and plates together every evening. We usually listen to audiobooks while we work. We like to choose books about the past or the natural world. At the moment, we are listening to a book about famous kings and queens. It is very interesting and it really helps me with my history lessons at school! We just put my dad's tablet on a high shelf and listen together. It makes the kitchen a great place to learn.

Leo

My parents are always surprised because I want to do the washing up after dinner. In the past, I never wanted to help in the kitchen. But last month, I started listening to a brilliant audiobook about a magical world. The story is very long, so I need lots of time to hear it. Now, I really enjoy cleaning the dirty plates! Sometimes, I even wash the cooking pots so I can stay in the kitchen and listen for another ten minutes.

Setting timers to limit your screen time

    Daily App Limits

Do you play games on your phone for hours? You can use the settings on your mobile to help you. It is very easy to put a time limit on your favourite apps. For example, you can choose to use social media for only thirty minutes a day. When the time is finished, the app closes by itself. You cannot open it again until the next morning! This is a great way to find more time for your other hobbies.

    Bedtime Timers

Looking at a bright screen at night is a bad idea. It can make you feel awake when you need to rest. You should set a bedtime timer on your phone. You can tell your phone to lock all your apps at nine o'clock in the evening. The screen also changes to a dark colour. You will not hear any loud noises or get messages from your friends. You can just put your phone on your desk and go to sleep.

    Focus Timers

It is hard to do your homework when your phone is on the table. But you can download special timer apps to help you study. You start the timer for an hour and begin your work. If you do not touch your phone, a beautiful digital tree grows on your screen. You get points for every tree! But if you open a message, the tree dies. You can even use this app with your classmates to see who gets the most points.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: The text says you can choose to use social media for "only thirty minutes a day", which is half an hour.

8 C - Reason: The text tells you that special timer apps can "help you study" and do your "homework".

11 C - Reason: The text says if you do not touch your phone, a tree grows and "You get points".

12 B - Reason: The text explains that looking at a bright screen at night "can make you feel awake when you need to rest."

13 A - Reason: The text says that when the app closes, "You cannot open it again until the next morning!"

Paying for cinema tickets with a phone

      Harry

I always use my phone to buy cinema tickets. It is very fast. I do not have a job, so my mum and dad put money on my digital wallet every week. I just hold my phone near the machine to pay. But last month, I left my phone on my bed at home. I could not buy a ticket and had to wait outside! My friend bought popcorn, but he did not have enough money to pay for my ticket.

      Luna

Using a digital wallet on my phone is great. When I buy cinema tickets with it, the cinema gives me special points. This means my next ticket costs less money. That is really useful! I also like the app because it shows me exactly how much money I spend every week. Last weekend, my best friend forgot her cash. I used my phone to pay for her ticket, and she gave me the money later.

      Zack

I only started using a digital wallet last week. At first, I felt nervous about putting my money on my phone. I thought it was not safe. But now I know it is fine, and I love it. I go to the cinema every Saturday. I buy my ticket online before I go. When I am at the cinema, I also use my phone to get drinks and sweet things to eat. My sister wants to use it too, but she is too young.
