Reading an e-book before sleep

Liam

Every night, I get into bed and read my e-book for ten minutes. I absolutely love stories about magic and dragons. They are not real, but they are very exciting. My younger brother sleeps in the same room as me. Because of this, I make the screen very dark. The light does not wake him up. I usually read two or three pages. After that, my eyes feel heavy and I go to sleep quickly.

Emma

I always read on my digital tablet before I sleep. I do not read stories about adventures. I prefer to read about history. It is great to learn about famous people from a long time ago. I do not buy these books. I borrow them from the town library website for free. In the morning, I sit at the kitchen table and tell my mum and dad all the interesting facts from my book!

Noah

Reading an e-book helps me relax after a busy school day. I love reading mystery stories. Sometimes, I am so tired that I forget what happens in the story. Then, I have to look at the same page again the next night! I use a special app on my phone to read. I always set a clock on the app. It turns the screen off after fifteen minutes. This is very useful when I fall asleep.

You must work early on Saturday mornings. You have to bring your own digital camera for this job. You cannot use a mobile phone. We pay ten pounds an hour. We also give you a free breakfast before you go home! Please come to the café to speak to the manager.

    The Green Park Café

We are looking for young people to work on Saturday afternoons. Your job is to take photos of our customers drinking coffee in the sunshine. We only want pictures outside in the park, not inside the café! People often bring their dogs here, and we need nice photos of them too. A mobile phone camera is fine. We pay you money, but we do not give free food. You must bring a letter from your parents to say you can work here.

Our busy café needs a student to take photos on Sunday afternoons. We want pictures of our big chocolate cakes and the friends who meet here. You do not need to bring a camera. Trading video games to save money

      Leo

I love playing football and tennis video games. But new games are very expensive, and I need to save my pocket money. I want to buy a new games console next year! To save money, I started a small club at my school. Every Friday, five of my classmates bring their old games to the library. We swap them with each other for the weekend. We never use the internet to trade because we see each other every day. It is a brilliant idea!

      Mark

I usually play video games on my computer. My favourite games are about racing cars or exploring jungles. I do not have many friends at my school who like these games. So, I use a safe website to trade my old games with other teenagers. Before I put a game in the post, I always ask my dad to check it. He makes sure there are no scratches and it works perfectly. Then, I wait for my new game to arrive in the mail.

      Toby

My uncle always buys me a new adventure game for my birthday. I get very excited and play it all day. But I usually finish the story quickly and then I get bored of it. I never sell my old games for money. Instead, I give them to my older cousins, and they give me their old games. They have lots of great games, but I always say no to their sports games. I really hate playing football on a screen!

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Text C says Toby gives his games to his "older cousins" and they give him theirs. Text A has a trap about trading with classmates, not family.

8 B - Reason: Text B says Mark asks his "dad to check it" before he posts a game. Text C mentions an uncle, but only because he buys Toby a game.

9 A - Reason: Text A says Leo "started a small club at my school" so classmates can swap games.

10 C - Reason: Text C says Toby finishes the story quickly and then says "I get bored of it".

11 A - Reason: Text A says Leo needs to save his pocket money to "buy a new games console next year".

12 B - Reason: Text B says Mark uses "a safe website to trade my old games with other teenagers". Text A has a negative trap stating Leo's group "never use the internet to trade".

13 B - Reason: Text B says Mark's favourite games are about "racing cars". Text A has a trap mentioning sports games, but not driving. Text C has a negative trap where Toby hates football.
