Real Shops or Online Shopping?

Sam

I always buy my clothes on the internet. It is very easy because I can shop while I sit on my sofa. The best part is when the postman brings the box to my door. It feels like a birthday present! I also hate carrying heavy shopping bags on the bus. But online shopping has one bad thing. Sometimes the clothes are too big or too small when I put them on. Then I have to send them back.

Lily

I do not like buying things on my computer. When I want a new dress, I go to the shopping centre with my friends. It is a great way to spend a Saturday! I need to try clothes on to see if I look good. I also hate waiting for days to get my things. When I buy a dress in a shop, I can wear it that night. We usually eat burgers and chips at the mall, too.

Ben

I think both ways of shopping are good. I always go to real shops to look at shoes or jackets. I like to touch them and see the colours. But I never buy them there! The prices are usually much lower on the internet. So, I go home and order them on my computer. I also like reading what other people write about the clothes online. This helps me choose the best things. It saves me a lot of cash!

    Thinking Before You Buy

    The Wardrobe Check

Before you buy a new shirt or dress, open your bedroom cupboard. Look at all your clothes. Do you already have something that looks the same? Sometimes we buy a blue T-shirt when we already have three blue T-shirts at home! You should also think about space. Is your cupboard completely full? If you cannot find a place to put the new clothes, you probably do not need them. Always look at your old clothes first.

    The Matching Test

When you see a nice jacket in a shop, think about your other clothes. A good rule is to make sure you can wear the new jacket with three different things you already own. Can you wear it with your favourite jeans, your school trousers, and a summer skirt? If the answer is yes, it is a good idea to buy it. If you have to buy new shoes to match the jacket, you should leave it in the shop.

    The Waiting Game

It is easy to buy things quickly, especially when clothes are cheap. But you must ask yourself a question: do I really love this? When you see something you want, do not buy it today. Go home and wait for three days. If you still think about the clothes after three days, you can go back and get them. Often, you will forget about the clothes completely. This simple trick helps you save a lot of money!

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: The Wardrobe Check asks, "Is your cupboard completely full?" and says to check if you have "a place to put the new clothes".

Working at home for new clothes

      Leo

I want to buy a heavy winter jacket, but it costs a lot. My dad told me I can earn money if I help him. I really do not like washing plates or cleaning rooms, so I only do jobs outside. Every Saturday, I wash the family car with soapy water. It takes a long time, but my dad gives me a few pounds. Sometimes, I also clean my sister's bicycle. I keep all the cash in a small box.

      Sara

My best friend is having a big birthday party next month. I really want to buy a beautiful new dress for it. To earn the money, I do jobs in the garden every Sunday. I cut the tall grass and water the flowers. The garden is very large, so my younger brother does the work with me. We also wash the outside windows together. We share the money our parents give us. I almost have enough for my dress!

      Mark

I love the new running trainers in the sports shop. My parents said they are too expensive to buy for me. Because of this, I asked them if I could do chores to get the money. They agreed! Now, I clean the kitchen every evening. I wash the cups and I often make dinner for my family too. I really enjoy cooking! It is a lot of work, but I feel great. Next weekend, I can buy my new shoes.
