Using digital maps to explore a new city

Leo

When my family visited Madrid, I was the one holding the phone. I loved using the digital map to find small, quiet streets for us to walk down, far away from all the busy traffic. We saw a great restaurant there and went inside, but I didn’t use the app to find it! I think looking at a map on a screen is much better than trying to ask people for directions, especially in a country where I don't speak the language.

Mia

Before we left our hotel in Rome, I downloaded the city map onto my phone using the free Wi-Fi. It was really helpful at first. I even used it to find the correct bus to take us to the Colosseum. But later that afternoon, my phone battery died, so the screen went black and I couldn’t see the map at all! In the end, we had to stop and ask a friendly shop worker for directions to get back to our hotel.

Sam

Normally, my dad holds his phone and looks at the map when we visit a new city. But in Berlin last weekend, he gave the job to me! We were walking near a famous museum and there was a lot of traffic. I opened the app to look for somewhere for lunch. I found a wonderful little café that had amazing cakes. I always carry a phone charger in my bag, so I didn't need to worry about my battery dying.

      Funny translation mistakes

      Leo

I went to a café in Spain. I did not get lost because I found it on my map. I wanted to order dessert, so I used my language app. But I didn't look at my screen carefully and typed the wrong word. I wanted a piece of cake, but I wrote 'cat'. The waiter looked surprised! He did not bring me a pet, of course. He just gave me an apple! I am going to buy a new shirt tomorrow. I hope I don't make another mistake!

      Mia

I went to France with my family. I forgot to bring my warm jacket, so I needed to buy a jumper. I found a nice clothes shop and used my app to ask for a blue jumper. But the app translated it wrong, and I asked for a blue potato! The shop assistant thought it was very funny, and we both laughed a lot. I finally bought a lovely jumper. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant, but my dad ordered the food, so there were no mistakes!

      Sam

I was in Italy last summer. I wanted to visit the famous beach. I used my app to ask a man in the street for help. I tried to say, "Where is the beach?" But I made a mistake with the speaking tool. I actually said, "Where is the sheep?" The man smiled and pointed to a farm! I didn't buy anything that day, and I didn't eat in a café. I just walked and enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather.
