Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Tom's travel video

Fourteen-year-old Tom writes about making a video diary on a train.

Fourteen-year-old Tom loves making short films. Last Saturday, he went on a long train journey to the coast for a holiday with his family. He decided to use his mobile phone to film a video diary about his trip. He wanted to show his friends exactly what travelling by train is like.

For the first two hours, everything was great. Tom filmed the beautiful green fields out of the window and recorded his parents eating their sandwiches. He also talked to the camera about how he was feeling. He was very pleased with his work and he really enjoyed doing it.

However, Tom suddenly had a big problem. He looked at his phone screen and saw that his battery was almost completely empty. Because he was using the camera so much, the phone was dying very quickly. He felt quite worried because he didn't want to stop filming, and his main charger was inside his big suitcase at the back of the train.

Then, Tom looked down and saw something wonderful. Right under his seat, there was a small USB plug. He quickly put his phone cable into it and started charging his device. He was very surprised because he didn't know that trains had this clever technology for passengers to use.

Tom spent the rest of the journey editing his video clips on his phone. When he finally arrived at the coast, he uploaded his fantastic travel diary to the internet immediately. Because his friends loved the video so much, Tom is going to film a new diary when he travels on an aeroplane next month.

14   Why did Tom make a video on the train?

A to learn how to use his new mobile phone

B to show his friends what the journey was like

C to remember a special holiday with his family

15   What did Tom do during the first two hours?

A He ate some sandwiches with his parents.

B He looked at a video of some green fields.

C He recorded himself speaking to the camera.

16   What problem did Tom have on the train?

A He left his phone in a suitcase at the back of the train.

B He felt too tired to continue filming the journey.

C His mobile phone was losing power very fast.

17   How did Tom feel when he found the USB plug?

A pleased because he could buy a new phone cable

B surprised that people could charge phones on the train

C worried because it was hidden right under his seat

18   What is Tom planning to do next?

A go on a holiday to the coast with his friends

B teach his friends how to edit video clips

C record a journey on a different type of transport

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: The first paragraph states that Tom "wanted to show his friends exactly what travelling by train is like" (show his friends what the journey was like). A is a wrong logic trap; he used his phone to make the video, not to learn how to use the phone itself. C is a partial truth trap; he was on a holiday with his family, but his reason for filming was to show his friends.

15 C - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that Tom "talked to the camera about how he was feeling" (recorded himself speaking). A is a wrong reference trap; his parents ate sandwiches, not Tom. B is a wrong logic trap; he filmed the fields out the window, he didn't watch a video of them.

16 C - Explanation: The third paragraph says that Tom's "battery was almost completely empty" and "the phone was dying very quickly" (losing power fast). A is a partial truth trap; his main charger was in his suitcase at the back of the train, not his phone. B is a wrong logic trap; his phone was dying, but Tom wasn't too tired to continue filming.

17 B - Explanation: The fourth paragraph states that Tom was "surprised because he didn't know that trains had this clever technology for passengers to use" (surprised people could charge phones on the train). A is a wrong fact trap; he used his own phone cable, he didn't buy a new one. C is a wrong emotion trap; he thought finding the plug under his seat was "wonderful", not worrying.

18 C - Explanation: The final paragraph shows Tom's future plans: he is "going to film a new diary when he travels on an aeroplane next month" (record a journey on a different type of transport). A is a wrong reference trap; he is at the coast with his family, while his friends watched the video online. B is a wrong logic trap; his friends loved his video, but he is not planning to teach them how to edit.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    My holiday translation app

Fifteen-year-old Uma writes about a useful computer program she took to Spain.

Hi, I'm Uma and I am fifteen years old. Last month, I went on a wonderful family holiday to Madrid in Spain. Before we travelled, my brother told me to download a special voice translation app on my mobile phone. It is a program that changes English words into Spanish. I used it a lot during our trip, and today I want to write a review of it for my blog.

The best thing about this app is that it is very helpful when you want to eat out. We visited lots of fantastic restaurants in Madrid. My parents don't speak any Spanish, so they couldn't read the menus. I just spoke into my phone, and the app asked the waiters for our food in Spanish. It was so fast and simple!

However, the app wasn't perfect all the time. When we walked around the city, we heard many young people talking in the streets. I tried to use the app to understand their conversations. The problem is that the app only knows normal dictionary words. It completely misunderstood all the special slang and funny street words the teenagers used, so I didn't understand anything they said!

I still think you should download this app before you travel to another country. It is a fantastic tool to have in your pocket if there is an emergency and you need to ask for help. But remember, a computer can't do everything. My advice is to buy a small book and learn a few real Spanish words before you go!

14   Why did Uma get the translation app?

A She wanted to write a travel blog about it.

B Her brother told her to put it on her phone.

C She needed to learn Spanish for a school trip.

15   How did the app help Uma's family in the restaurants?

A It taught her parents how to speak Spanish.

B It ordered the family's meals from the waiters.

C It found the best Spanish restaurants in the city.

16   What problem did Uma have with the app?

A It didn't translate the unusual words that young people used.

B It stopped working when the city streets were too noisy.

C It was difficult to carry around while walking in the city.

17   What advice does Uma give to her readers?

A Buy a Spanish dictionary to use in emergencies.

B Study some of the local language before travelling.

C Only use your mobile phone when you have a problem.

18   Why has Uma written this blog?

A to share her thoughts on a digital travel tool

B to describe the best places to visit in Madrid

C to explain how to order food in a foreign country

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text states "my brother told me to download a special voice translation app on my mobile phone," which means he told her to put it on her phone. A is a partial truth because she is writing a blog now, but that is not why she got the app in the first place. C is wrong logic because she went on a "family holiday," not a school trip.

15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Uma says "I just spoke into my phone, and the app asked the waiters for our food in Spanish." This means it ordered their meals. A is wrong logic because the text says her parents "don't speak any Spanish"; the app did the talking for them. C is a partial truth because they visited fantastic restaurants, but the app didn't find the places, it only helped them order food.

16 A - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Uma explains that the app "completely misunderstood all the special slang and funny street words the teenagers used." This means it didn't translate the unusual words. B is a wrong reference because she mentions young people talking in the streets, but doesn't say the noise stopped the app from working. C is wrong logic because the app is just on her phone, and she doesn't complain about carrying it.

17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Uma's advice is to "learn a few real Spanish words before you go," which means to study some of the language. A is a wrong reference because she says the app is good for emergencies and you should buy a "small book" (to learn words), not specifically a dictionary for emergencies. C is wrong logic because she recommends having the app for an emergency, but doesn't say you should only use your phone then.

18 A - Explanation: This is a global question testing the overall purpose of the text. Uma is writing an informative review blog to share her positive and negative opinions (her thoughts) on the voice translation app (a digital travel tool). B is a partial truth because she visited Madrid, but describing the city is not the main topic of the text. C is a partial truth because she ordered food in paragraph 2, but the whole text is about the app itself.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      A mountain adventure

Fourteen-year-old Victor writes about a walk with his father.

Fourteen-year-old Victor loves spending time outdoors. Last weekend, he went on a long walk in the mountains with his father. Victor wanted to help his dad find the correct way. So, he decided to use a new map app on his mobile phone. He looked at the screen carefully and told his father which path to take.

For the first two hours, everything was great. The weather was beautiful, and they walked up a large hill. But suddenly, Victor had a big problem. The internet connection on his phone stopped working. There was no mobile signal in the mountains! The screen went grey, and Victor couldn't see his map. His father looked worried because they didn't know which way to go.

Luckily, Victor had a brilliant idea before they left home. He knew that the mountains can be a difficult place for mobile phones. So, he downloaded a special offline map to his phone that morning. This meant he didn't need the internet to read it. He quickly opened the offline map and found their exact position.

An hour later, they safely reached the top of the mountain. The view was amazing. They sat down to eat their sandwiches, and Victor took lots of great photos of his dad. Victor felt very proud because his careful preparation saved the day.

Now, Victor feels much more confident about exploring nature. Because this walk was so successful, he wants to go to a different place. Next month, he plans to organise a walk in a large forest for his whole family. He will definitely remember to download the map first!

14   Why did Victor use the map app on his phone?

A He needed to find out about the weather in the mountains.

B He wanted to help his father find the right path.

C His father asked him to test the new piece of technology.

15   What was the problem in the second paragraph?

A The weather changed while they were walking up the hill.

B Victor dropped his mobile phone and the screen turned grey.

C The phone's internet connection stopped working.

16   How did Victor solve the problem?

A He used a map that he saved on his phone earlier that day.

B He asked his father to find their position on the mountain.

C He walked to a different place to get a mobile signal.

17   What happened at the top of the mountain?

A Victor used his phone to take some pictures of his dad.

B They bought some delicious sandwiches to eat.

C Victor's father felt proud of his careful preparation.

18   What is Victor planning to do next month?

A download a new map app for his phone

B go back to the same mountain with his parents

C plan a forest walk for everyone in his family

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text states Victor "wanted to help his dad find the correct way. So, he decided to use a new map app," which matches option B. A is a partial truth trap; the text mentions the weather being beautiful later, but he didn't use the app to check the weather. C is a wrong reference trap; Victor decided to use the app himself, his father didn't ask him to test it.

15 C - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that "The internet connection on his phone stopped working," making C the correct answer. A is wrong logic; the text says the weather was beautiful, it didn't change badly. B is a partial truth trap; the screen went grey, but he didn't drop his phone.

16 A - Explanation: The third paragraph says Victor "downloaded a special offline map to his phone that morning" and didn't need the internet to read it, which matches option A. B is a wrong reference trap; Victor found their position, not his father. C is wrong logic; he didn't walk to find a signal, he just opened the offline map.

17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, the text states that "Victor took lots of great photos of his dad," which matches option A. B uses wrong logic; they sat down to eat their sandwiches, but they didn't buy them at the top of the mountain. C is a wrong reference trap; Victor felt proud of his preparation, not his father.

18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text states that Victor "plans to organise a walk in a large forest for his whole family," which matches option C. A is wrong logic; he will remember to download a map, but he isn't getting a new app. B uses wrong logic; he specifically says he wants to go to a "different place" (a forest), not back to the same mountain.
