Test 1

Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Owen’s new computer

Sixteen-year-old Owen writes about a special technology project he did at home.

Sixteen-year-old Owen has always loved playing video games in his free time. Because the newest games need a lot of power, he wanted to get a really fast computer. However, he didn't buy a finished one from a technology shop. Instead, he saved his pocket money for a year and bought all the separate parts online. He decided to build his own computer right in his bedroom.

When all the different boxes arrived at his house, Owen spent the whole of Saturday putting the pieces together on his desk. He read the instruction books carefully and used a small tool to join everything. It was quite difficult work, but he felt very excited about having a brilliant new gaming machine.

After many hours of hard work, Owen finally finished his project. However, when he pushed the start button, absolutely nothing happened. The new computer wouldn't turn on at all. The screen was completely black, and there were no noises or lights. Owen felt extremely worried because he thought he broke an expensive computer part.

Owen didn't want to take the machine to a repair shop. Instead, he used his mobile phone to watch a special video online. In the video, a man explained exactly how to build a computer. Suddenly, Owen saw his big mistake. He forgot to connect one very small cable to the power box! He quickly plugged the cable in, and the computer started immediately.

Now, Owen’s new machine works perfectly, and it is much faster than his old laptop. He is very proud of his hard work. Because he learned so much from this project, Owen is going to help his best friend build a gaming computer next month.

14   How did Owen get his new computer?

A He built it using pieces he bought on the internet.

B He bought a finished machine from a technology shop.

C He saved his pocket money to pay someone to make it.

15   How did Owen feel while he was making the computer?

A worried because he didn't have the right tools

B excited because he was getting a great new machine

C pleased that the work was so easy to do

16   What happened when Owen pushed the start button?

A The machine made some strange noises.

B An expensive part broke inside the computer.

C The new device didn't do anything at all.

17   How did Owen find out what his mistake was?

A A man at a repair shop explained it to him.

B He used his phone to ask his dad for help.

C He watched a video on the internet about it.

18   What is Owen planning to do in the future?

A help his friend make a machine like his

B buy a faster laptop for his bedroom

C teach his friend how to play a new video game

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The first paragraph states that Owen "bought all the separate parts online" and "decided to build his own computer" (built it using pieces from the internet). B is a wrong logic trap; the text explicitly says he didn't buy a finished one from a shop. C is a partial truth trap; he saved his pocket money, but he made it himself, he didn't pay someone else to make it.

15 B - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that Owen "felt very excited about having a brilliant new gaming machine" (excited because he was getting a great new machine). A is a wrong fact trap; he used a small tool, so he had what he needed, and he wasn't worried at this point. C is a wrong logic trap; the text says the work was "quite difficult", not easy.

16 C - Explanation: The third paragraph states that "absolutely nothing happened" and the computer "wouldn't turn on at all" (didn't do anything). A is a wrong fact trap; the text says there were "no noises". C is a wrong logic trap; Owen thought he broke an expensive part, but it didn't actually break.

17 C - Explanation: The fourth paragraph says Owen "used his mobile phone to watch a special video online. In the video, a man explained exactly how to build a computer" (watched a video on the internet). A is a partial truth trap; a man explained it, but it was in a video, not at a repair shop. B is a partial truth trap; he used his phone, but he didn't ask his dad for help.

18 A - Explanation: The final paragraph shows Owen's future plans: "Owen is going to help his best friend build a gaming computer next month" (help his friend make a machine like his). B is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions his old laptop, but he isn't buying a new one. C is a wrong logic trap; they both like gaming, but he is going to help his friend build a computer, not teach him how to play a game.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    Flying inside the house

Twelve-year-old Penny writes a review of a fun indoor gadget.

Hi! I am Penny, and I am twelve years old. Welcome to my new technology blog. Last week, I got a wonderful present for my birthday. It is a mini-drone, which is a tiny flying machine that you control with your smartphone. Today, I want to write a review of it to tell you what I think.

The best thing about this drone is that it is made for indoor flying. Many drones are very big and heavy. If you fly them inside, they can easily break a window or hurt someone. But my new drone is incredibly small and very light. The special plastic covers on the outside keep it completely safe to use inside the house.

I have a lot of fun playing with it in our living room. I asked my dad to hold some plastic hoops in the air, and I try to fly the drone straight through them. It is quite difficult at first, but it feels amazing when you finally do it! My younger brother loves watching it fly around his head.

However, there is one big problem with this cool machine. The battery inside the drone is extremely small. Because of this, it only gives you about eight minutes of flying time before it stops working. After that, I have to wait a whole hour for it to charge again. I always feel sad when the fun finishes so quickly.

Even with this small problem, I think every teenager should try flying a mini-drone. It is a brilliant hobby for rainy days. If you decide to buy one, my advice is to get two or three extra batteries from the shop. That way, you can practice your flying skills for a much longer time!

14   Why did Penny get the mini-drone?

A She bought it with her own money.

B She won it in a technology competition.

C She received it as a birthday gift.

15   What does Penny say about flying her new drone indoors?

A It is safe because it is small and light.

B It can sometimes break the living room windows.

C It is too difficult to control with a smartphone.

16   What does Penny enjoy doing with her drone?

A teaching her younger brother how to fly it

B flying it through things that her dad holds

C racing it around the living room with her dad

17   What is the problem with the drone?

A It takes an hour to learn how to use it.

B It can only fly for a very short time.

C It is very difficult to find batteries for it in the shop.

18   Why has Penny written this blog?

A to share her thoughts about a new gadget

B to complain about a broken toy that she received

C to explain how to use a smartphone to play games

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 C - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Penny says "I got a wonderful present for my birthday," which means she received it as a birthday gift. A is wrong logic because she didn't buy it herself. B is a partial truth because she is writing a technology blog, but she didn't win the drone in a competition.

15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Penny explains that her new drone "is incredibly small and very light," which keeps it "completely safe to use inside the house." B is wrong logic because she says big drones can break a window, not her small drone. C is a wrong reference because she uses her smartphone to control it, but she doesn't say it is too difficult to use.

16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Penny says "I asked my dad to hold some plastic hoops in the air, and I try to fly the drone straight through them." A is a partial truth because her younger brother is in the room, but he just watches; she doesn't teach him. C is wrong logic because her dad is holding the hoops, not racing his own drone.

17 B - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, Penny explains that the drone "only gives you about eight minutes of flying time before it stops working," meaning it can only fly for a short time. A is a wrong reference because she has to wait an hour for it to charge, not an hour to learn how to use it. C is wrong logic because she advises readers to buy extra batteries from the shop, so they are not difficult to find.

18 A - Explanation: This is a global question testing the overall purpose of the text. Penny writes the review blog to share her opinions (both positive and negative) about her new mini-drone (a new gadget). B is wrong logic because the toy isn't broken; it just runs out of battery quickly. C is a partial truth because you use a smartphone to fly the drone, but the blog is a review of the drone itself, not a guide on using phones.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      Learning a new trick

Fourteen-year-old Quinn writes about his new digital hobby.

Fourteen-year-old Quinn has an interesting new hobby. Last month, he watched a great film about a famous magician. After that, he really wanted to learn how to do magic tricks with a pack of cards. He hoped to learn some exciting tricks to show his classmates at school. Because he didn't know anyone who could teach him, he decided to look for some special video lessons on the internet.

Quinn quickly found a video of a man showing people how to do card magic. The man in the video was very friendly, and he explained everything clearly. He showed the viewers how to hold the cards in their hands. Quinn sat at his desk with his own cards and tried to copy the man's actions. He felt sure that it was going to be quite easy.

However, Quinn soon had a big problem. When the magician started to do the actual trick, he moved his hands incredibly fast. Quinn couldn't see what was happening on his computer screen at all. The secret of the trick was impossible to understand. Quinn felt very annoyed because he watched the video five times, but he still couldn't do the magic trick himself.

Then, Quinn had a brilliant idea. He remembered that his video player had a special button to change the speed. He clicked the button and made the video play much more slowly. Suddenly, he could see exactly where the magician put the cards!

After an hour of practice, Quinn learned the trick perfectly. He decided not to show his school friends yet. Instead, he performed it for his parents that evening, and they were amazed. He plans to use another video to learn a different trick next weekend.

14   Why did Quinn look for magic videos on the internet?

A He wanted to show his friends a film about a famous magician.

B He didn't have a person to show him how to do the tricks.

C He needed to find a new hobby for a special school project.

15   How did Quinn feel when he first started watching the video?

A He believed the magic trick would not be difficult to learn.

B He was worried because the man didn't explain things clearly.

C He felt pleased because he successfully copied the man's actions.

16   What problem did Quinn have in the third paragraph?

A The computer screen went dark before the end of the trick.

B He clicked on the wrong magic video five times.

C The man in the video used his hands too quickly.

17   How did Quinn finally understand the secret of the trick?

A He watched the video at a slower speed.

B He asked his parents to help him practise.

C He spent an hour watching a different magician.

18   What did Quinn do after he learned the trick?

A He did the trick for his classmates at school.

B He decided to teach his parents how to do magic.

C He showed the trick to his mother and father.

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text states "Because he didn't know anyone who could teach him, he decided to look for some special video lessons on the internet," which makes B the correct answer. A is a wrong reference trap; he watched a film about a magician, but he didn't look for videos to show that film to his friends. C uses wrong logic; he wanted to show his classmates, but it was not a school project.

15 A - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that Quinn "felt sure that it was going to be quite easy," matching option A. B uses wrong logic; the text says the man actually "explained everything clearly." C is a partial truth trap; he tried to copy the man's actions, but he wasn't successful yet.

16 C - Explanation: The third paragraph says the magician "moved his hands incredibly fast," making C correct. A is a partial truth trap; Quinn couldn't see what was happening on his screen, but it was because the man's hands were fast, not because the screen went dark. B is a wrong reference trap; he watched the video five times, but it wasn't the wrong video.

17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, the text states that Quinn "clicked the button and made the video play much more slowly," which matches option A. B is a wrong reference trap; he performed for his parents later, but they didn't help him practise. C is a partial truth trap; he spent an hour practising, but he didn't watch a different magician.

18 C - Explanation: The final paragraph says he "performed it for his parents that evening," which matches showing the trick to his mother and father (C). A is a wrong logic trap; the text explicitly says, "He decided not to show his school friends yet." B uses wrong logic; he performed the trick for his parents, he didn't teach them how to do it.
