Test 1

Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A sweet school trip

13-year-old Evan writes about visiting a special factory.

My name is Evan and I am 13 years old. I am writing this blog to tell you about a fantastic trip I went on last week. My business class at school is learning about how different companies make things and sell them. Because of this, our teacher took us to visit a real working chocolate factory in our city.

When we arrived, the smell inside the building was amazing. First, a friendly tour guide showed us around the factory. We watched the workers use cocoa beans and sugar to make huge blocks of sweet chocolate. I thought it was completely fascinating to see exactly how they do it. I also loved seeing how quickly they put the finished chocolate into colourful paper boxes.

However, there was one difficult thing about the tour. When we went into the main room, there were some enormous mixing machines. They were mixing the hot chocolate together, but they were incredibly loud. The noise from the machines made it very hard to hear the guide. Because my friends and I were standing at the back of the group, we couldn't understand what he was saying.

If your school class decides to visit the chocolate factory, I have some important advice for you. You should definitely try to walk right at the front of your group, next to the guide. If you do this, you won't miss any of his interesting facts about how the chocolate is made. It is a brilliant place to visit, but you just need to make sure you can hear everything!

14   Why did Evan's class go to the chocolate factory?

A to buy some sweet chocolate for their teacher

B to learn about how businesses work

C to show the workers how to make things

15   What did Evan enjoy doing on the tour?

A watching how the workers make the chocolate

B eating huge blocks of sweet chocolate

C learning how to put chocolate into colourful boxes

16   What was the problem in the main room?

A The guide didn't know what to say to the group.

B Evan's friends didn't want to listen to the guide.

C The mixing machines made too much noise.

17   What is Evan's advice for future visitors?

A Ask the guide to explain some interesting facts.

B Stay close to the guide so you can hear him.

C Wait at the back of the group with your friends.

18   What is Evan doing in this text?

A complaining about his business class at school

B explaining how to get a job in a chocolate factory

C describing a trip and giving advice to other students

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Evan says his business class is "learning about how different companies make things and sell them." Option A is a wrong logic trap; they visited a factory that makes sweet chocolate, but they didn't go there to buy it for their teacher. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the workers already know how to make things, Evan's class went to watch them.

15 A - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Evan says "We watched the workers... make huge blocks of sweet chocolate" and it was "completely fascinating to see exactly how they do it." Option B is a wrong logic trap; they saw the huge blocks of chocolate, but the text never says they ate them. Option C is a partial truth trap; he loved seeing the workers put chocolate into boxes, but he didn't learn how to do it himself.

16 C - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Evan explains that the mixing machines "were incredibly loud" and the noise "made it very hard to hear the guide." Option A is a wrong reference trap; the guide had things to say, but they couldn't hear him because of the noise. Option B is a wrong logic trap; Evan's friends couldn't understand the guide because they were at the back, not because they didn't want to listen.

17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Evan says, "You should definitely try to walk right at the front of your group, next to the guide." Option A is a partial truth trap; the guide tells interesting facts, but Evan's advice is to walk at the front to hear them, not to ask for them. Option C is a wrong logic trap; standing at the back of the group is exactly what caused Evan's problem.

18 C - Explanation: Throughout the text, Evan describes his school trip to the chocolate factory, and in the final paragraph, he gives "important advice" to readers who might visit. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he complains about the loud machines, but he doesn't complain about his business class. Option B is a partial truth trap; he visits a working factory, but he is not teaching people how to get a job there.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A geography trip on the river

Fourteen-year-old Fiona writes about a school boat trip.

I am Fiona, and I am fourteen years old. My favourite subject at school is geography. Last week, our geography teacher, Mr Smith, took my class on a special trip. We went on a slow boat journey down the river that goes through our town. We went there to learn about the animals that live on the river and to study the problem of dirty water. I was really excited about being outside for the afternoon.

During the first part of the trip, the weather was beautiful. I sat on a seat at the side of the boat to look at the water. I had a notebook and my favourite blue pen with me. The teacher asked us to write down information about any interesting plants or birds that we saw. I started to write some notes for my school project.

Suddenly, the boat moved quickly, and I dropped my pen! It fell right into the dirty river water. I tried to catch it, but it was impossible. The pen belonged to my grandfather, so it was very special to me. I felt incredibly upset and annoyed with myself. For a few minutes, I didn't want to do any more school work.

However, I soon looked down at the water again. I saw a beautiful mother duck swimming past with five little babies behind her. They looked so funny and cute. Seeing them immediately made me smile again. I completely forgot about my lost pen and enjoyed the rest of the boat trip. Next week, I am going to show my photos of the ducks to the other students when we do our geography presentations!

14   Why did Fiona's class go on the boat trip?

A to find out about nature and dirty river water

B to help clean the river that goes through their town

C to take a slow journey to visit another town

15   What was Fiona doing on the side of the boat?

A She was writing down facts for her school project.

B She was drawing pictures of interesting plants and birds.

C She was looking in the water for her favourite blue pen.

16   How did Fiona feel when she dropped her pen?

A sad because it was an important family object

B annoyed because she couldn't finish her school work

C surprised because the boat was moving so quickly

17   What made Fiona feel happy again?

A watching a group of birds in the water

B finding her grandfather's pen near the boat

C laughing at the funny people on the boat

18   What is Fiona going to do next week?

A let her classmates see the pictures she took

B do a new geography project about a mother duck

C go on another boat trip to take more photos

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The text states that they went on the trip to "learn about the animals... and to study the problem of dirty water." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; they went to "study" the dirty water, not to clean it. Option C is a partial truth trap; they took a slow journey down the river through their own town, not to visit another town.

15 A - Explanation: The text explains that Fiona was asked to write down information and "started to write some notes for my school project." Option A matches this meaning exactly. Option B is wrong logic; she was writing notes about plants and birds, not drawing pictures of them. Option C is a wrong reference trap; she didn't drop her pen and start looking for it until the next paragraph.

16 A - Explanation: The text says that the pen "belonged to my grandfather, so it was very special" and that she felt "incredibly upset". Option A perfectly paraphrases this reason and feeling. Option B is wrong logic; she was annoyed with herself and "didn't want" to do more school work, not that she couldn't finish it. Option C is a partial truth trap; the boat moved quickly and caused the accident, but this does not describe her feelings about the dropped pen.

17 A - Explanation: The text states that Fiona saw a duck with her babies (a group of birds) and that "seeing them immediately made me smile again." Option A correctly matches this event. Option B is wrong logic; she "completely forgot" about the lost pen, she didn't find it. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the ducks looked funny to her, not the people on the boat.

18 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Fiona says her future plan is to "show my photos of the ducks to the other students". Option A perfectly summarises this action. Option B is a partial truth trap; she is doing geography presentations, but she isn't doing a whole new project specifically about a mother duck. Option C is wrong logic; she mentions her photos, but she does not say she is going on another boat trip.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      The Long Train Ride

15-year-old George writes about travelling to a big football game.

My name is George, and I am 15 years old. Last weekend, my school football team travelled to a different city for a big national match. Because the city was quite far away, we had to take a long train ride together. The journey took four hours! At first, I thought it was going to be a very boring morning, but actually, I really enjoyed the trip.

I think long journeys are a fantastic way for a sports team to spend time together. We usually just see each other during our short football practice after school. But on the train, we had a lot of free time to sit and talk. We chatted about the important match, told funny jokes, and became much better friends. It was great for our team spirit.

However, I learned something important about travelling on trains. Before the trip, I planned to watch a new action movie on my phone. I tried to use the train's free Wi-Fi, but this was a really bad idea. The internet connection failed after just ten minutes. My movie suddenly stopped, and I couldn't finish it. A few of my teammates had the same annoying problem.

Because of this, I have some good advice for other school teams who are going on long trips. You shouldn't plan to watch films or play online games. Instead, you should bring some classic card games in your bag. Playing cards together is a brilliant way to have fun without the internet. You will laugh a lot, and you definitely won't get bored on the journey!

14   What does George say about the train journey in the first paragraph?

A He was worried about playing in a different city.

B He thought four hours was too long to travel.

C He liked it more than he expected to.

15   Why does George think long journeys are good for sports teams?

A They help the players become closer to each other.

B They give the players a chance to practise football.

C They give the players time to rest before a big game.

16   What problem did George have on the train?

A He couldn't find his phone in his bag.

B He couldn't stay online for very long.

C He couldn't choose a good movie to watch.

17   What does George advise other sports teams to do?

A download their favourite films before they travel

B play games that do not need the internet

C sleep on the train so they do not feel bored

18   What is George doing in this text?

A sharing a travel experience and giving some advice

B complaining about the slow trains in his country

C explaining how to win a national football match

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 C - Explanation: In the first paragraph, George says, "At first, I thought it was going to be a very boring morning, but actually, I really enjoyed the trip," which means he liked it more than he expected (C). A is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions a different city, but he never says he was worried about playing there. B is a wrong logic trap; he mentions it took four hours, but he enjoyed it, so he didn't think it was too long.

15 A - Explanation: Paragraph 2 explains that on the train they "sat and talked" and "became much better friends," which matches A (become closer to each other). B is a wrong reference trap; he mentions football practice, but that is what they usually do after school, not on the train. C is a wrong logic trap; he mentions having "free time to sit," but they used it to chat and joke, not to rest or sleep.

16 B - Explanation: In paragraph 3, George says the train's "internet connection failed after just ten minutes," which means he couldn't stay online for very long (B). A is wrong logic; he had his phone and planned to watch a movie on it, he didn't lose it. C is a partial truth trap; he wanted to watch a movie, but his problem was the Wi-Fi failing, not choosing what to watch.

17 B - Explanation: Paragraph 4 advises students to "bring some classic card games" to "have fun without the internet," which matches B. A is wrong logic; he tells students they "shouldn't plan to watch films," but does not mention downloading them early. C is wrong reference; he says playing cards means you "won't get bored," but never mentions sleeping.

18 A - Explanation: This is a global question for an informative/opinion blog. Throughout the text, George writes about his train journey (his experience) and in the final paragraph gives recommendations for other teams (giving advice), making A the correct answer. B is wrong logic; he complains about the train's Wi-Fi, but not the speed of the trains. C is a partial truth trap; he travels to a national football match, but he does not explain how to win it.
