A surprise test in real life
Sometimes you can use what you learn at school!
Fifteen-year-old Queenie lives in a beautiful old town. Many tourists visit it every summer to see the famous buildings. Last Saturday morning, Queenie was walking to the shops to buy a birthday present for her best friend. Suddenly, she saw a tall man standing in the street. He was holding a large paper map and looking very confused. He didn't know where to go.
Queenie wanted to help him, so she walked over and said hello. The man smiled, but he didn't answer her in English. Instead, he started speaking in French! Queenie was very surprised. She studies French at school, but she is only in her first year. She knows some words, but it is quite difficult for her to understand people when they speak fast.
The man pointed at a picture of a train on his map. Queenie understood his problem immediately. He needed to find the town's train station. She couldn't remember how to say long sentences in French. So, she just used a few simple words and her hands to show him the way. She pointed down the street and said the French words for 'left' and 'right'.
The tourist understood her perfectly. He looked very happy and relaxed. He didn't say anything in French this time. Instead, he smiled and said a big "thank you" in English before he walked down the street to catch his train. Queenie was very pleased that he didn't miss his journey.
After this experience, Queenie felt very confident. She was glad she could help a visitor in her hometown. Now, she thinks speaking a foreign language is really fun. She is going to watch some French films this weekend so she can learn even more new words!
14 What was the man doing when Queenie saw him?
A trying to find his way using a map
B looking for a shop to buy a present
C taking pictures of famous old buildings
15 Why was Queenie surprised when she spoke to the tourist?
A He didn't answer her in English.
B He asked a question about her school.
C He spoke too fast for her to hear.
16 How did Queenie help the tourist?
A She drew him a picture of a train.
B She used short words and hand movements.
C She walked down the street with him.
17 What did the man do before he went to the station?
A He spoke to Queenie in English.
B He gave Queenie a present to say thank you.
C He asked Queenie to travel on the train with him.
18 What is Queenie planning to do next?
A start learning a completely new language
B watch some movies to improve her French
C visit a foreign country to speak to people
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text states the man was "holding a large paper map and looking very confused" because "he didn't know where to go." Option B is wrong reference; Queenie was going to a shop to buy a present, not the man. Option C is wrong logic; tourists visit to see old buildings, but the man was looking at a map, not taking pictures.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says "he didn't answer her in English. Instead, he started speaking in French! Queenie was very surprised." Option B is a partial truth trap; Queenie learns French at school, but the man didn't ask her about it. Option C is wrong logic; the text says she finds it difficult when people speak fast, but she was surprised specifically because he spoke French instead of English.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Queenie "used a few simple words and her hands to show him the way." Option A is wrong logic; the man pointed at a picture of a train already on his map; Queenie didn't draw it. Option C is a partial truth; she pointed down the street to show him the way, but she didn't walk there with him.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the man "smiled and said a big 'thank you' in English". Option B is wrong logic; the text does not say he gave her a present (Queenie was buying one earlier in the story). Option C is wrong because he walked away to catch his train, but he didn't invite her to come with him.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final paragraph, Queenie says she is "going to watch some French films this weekend so she can learn even more new words!" Option A is wrong logic; she is going to learn new words in French, not start a completely new language. Option C is wrong because the text says she liked helping a visitor in her own hometown; it doesn't mention her visiting a foreign country.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Holiday without parents
Sixteen-year-old Ryan writes about a recent trip with his friends.
Hi, I'm Ryan and I'm 16 years old. Last month, I did something really exciting. For the very first time, I went on a short holiday with my best friends instead of my parents. We spent five wonderful days in a beautiful city by the sea. Many teenagers want to travel without their families, so today I want to share my thoughts about my trip.
The best thing about travelling with friends is the freedom. When you go away with your parents, they usually decide what to do and when to wake up. But on our trip, we made our own choices. If we wanted to sleep until midday and then spend the whole afternoon playing beach volleyball, we could! It was brilliant to choose our own daily schedule.
However, it isn't always easy. Without adults to help, you have to do all the hard work yourself. I found it quite stressful to organize our money and buy the correct train tickets. One day, we almost caught the wrong train because we didn't read the information board carefully. When your parents aren't there, you must be very responsible.
Overall, travelling without parents is a fantastic experience, but you need to be ready. I advise other teenagers to plan every detail before they leave home. Check your travel times, book your rooms, and know exactly how much money you need. If you do this, you will avoid terrible problems and have an amazing holiday!
14 What was special about Ryan's holiday last month?
A He travelled without his family for the first time.
B He visited a beautiful city by the sea with his parents.
C He met his best friends while he was on the trip.
15 What did Ryan enjoy most about the holiday?
A deciding what to do each day
B sleeping all day instead of playing sports
C waking up early to go to the beach
16 What did Ryan find difficult during the trip?
A sorting out the tickets and money
B reading the information boards at the airport
C doing hard work for the adults
17 What does Ryan tell other teenagers to do?
A take a lot of money on their holiday
B organise everything carefully before the trip starts
C book their travel tickets after they leave home
18 What is Ryan doing in this text?
A complaining about going on holiday with his parents
B explaining how to buy train tickets for a trip
C giving his opinion about travelling with friends
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Ryan says, "For the very first time, I went on a short holiday... instead of my parents." Option B uses exact words from the text ("beautiful city by the sea") but is a partial truth because he did not go with his parents. Option C is wrong logic; he went on the trip with his best friends, he didn't meet them there.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Ryan says they had freedom, they "made our own choices," and it was brilliant to "choose our own daily schedule." Option B is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; they could sleep until midday, but they didn't sleep all day instead of playing sports (they played volleyball in the afternoon). Option C is the opposite of the truth; he liked that he didn't have to wake up early if he didn't want to.
16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says, "I found it quite stressful to organize our money and buy the correct train tickets." Option B is a wrong reference; the text mentions information boards, but they were for a train, not an airport. Option C is wrong logic; Ryan says "Without adults to help, you have to do all the hard work yourself," meaning he did the work for himself and his friends, not for the adults.
17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Ryan advises teenagers to "plan every detail before they leave home." Option A is wrong logic; he tells them to "know exactly how much money you need," not that they must take a lot of it. Option C is a partial truth; he mentions booking things, but he explicitly says to do it before they leave home, not after.
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the whole text is an opinion blog where Ryan shares his thoughts (pros, cons, and advice) about his trip with his friends. Option A is wrong logic; he simply says parents usually decide what to do, but he isn't complaining about them. Option B is a partial truth; he mentions buying train tickets was stressful, but it is just one detail, not the main purpose of the text.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Sleeping on a train!
Fourteen-year-old Sara writes a blog about a long journey with her family.
My name is Sara, and I am 14 years old. Last week, I went on a special trip with my parents and my younger brother. We travelled across the country on a night train. The journey took ten hours! I have never slept on a train before, so I decided to write this blog to tell other people about my experience.
First, there were many things I loved about the trip. The best part was our bedroom on the train. The beds were actually very comfortable, and we had plenty of space. Before we went to sleep, my family and I played some fun board games together. Then, when I woke up the next morning, I looked out of the window. The views of the countryside and the mountains were absolutely beautiful.
However, there was one big problem with travelling at night. During the journey, the train stopped at several different stations to let people get on and off. Every time the train stopped, it made a very loud noise. Because of this, I woke up many times during the night. In the morning, I felt quite tired because I didn't get enough sleep.
Overall, I think travelling on a night train is a fantastic adventure. It is much more fun than flying in a plane or driving a car. I definitely think other teenagers should try it with their families. But I have one important piece of advice if you go. You should bring some earplugs to put in your ears at night. That way, you won't hear the noisy stops, and you will sleep perfectly!
14 Why did Sara decide to write this blog?
A to explain how to buy tickets for a ten-hour journey
B to share her first experience of sleeping on a train
C to tell people about a special trip with her friends
15 What did Sara like about her bedroom on the train?
A It had enough space and comfortable beds.
B She could play board games with her new friends there.
C It had beautiful pictures of mountains inside it.
16 Why did Sara sleep badly on the journey?
A People getting on the train talked too loudly.
B She had to get off the train at several stations.
C The train was very noisy when it stopped at stations.
17 What advice does Sara give to other travellers?
A Take something to wear in your ears at night.
B Travel by plane if you want to sleep well.
C Play some board games if you wake up.
18 What is the best title for this blog?
A The best train stations to visit in the countryside
B A fun train trip, but remember to protect your ears
C How to sleep well on a long car journey
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Sara states, "I have never slept on a train before, so I decided to write this blog to tell other people about my experience." This matches option B. Option A is wrong logic because she does not mention buying tickets. Option C is a wrong reference trap because she went on the trip with her family (parents and brother), not her friends.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Sara says, "The best part was our bedroom... The beds were actually very comfortable, and we had plenty of space." This makes option A correct. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she played games with her family, not new friends. Option C is a wrong logic trap; she saw the mountains outside the window, not in pictures inside the room.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Sara explains that "Every time the train stopped, it made a very loud noise," which woke her up. This matches option C. Option A is a wrong reference trap; other people got on the train, but the text says the train itself made the noise, not the people. Option B is a partial truth trap; the train stopped at stations, but Sara didn't get off (other people did).
17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Sara's important piece of advice is: "You should bring some earplugs to put in your ears at night." This matches option A. Option B is wrong logic; she mentions a plane, but says the train is more fun than a plane. Option C is a chronological trap; she mentions playing board games earlier in the evening, not doing it when you wake up in the night.
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The text reviews a train journey that was a "fantastic adventure" (fun) but also had a problem with noise, so she recommends bringing earplugs to protect your ears. Option B perfectly captures the whole blog. Option A is wrong logic; the stations were annoying because they were noisy, not places to visit. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the blog is about a train journey, not a car journey.
