Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A special holiday with elephants

Sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you work hard!

Fifteen-year-old Rose loves animals. Last summer, she didn't go on a normal beach holiday. Instead, she travelled to Thailand with her aunt to work as a volunteer. They stayed at a special park for rescued elephants. These beautiful animals had hard lives in the past, so Rose wanted to help look after them. She was extremely excited to begin.

On her first morning, Rose woke up early. The weather was already really hot. She met the other volunteers and they started their work. Their first job was to clean the elephants' sleeping area. It was quite dirty, but Rose didn't mind. She just felt happy to be so close to the amazing animals.

After a quick lunch, it was time for the elephants to have a bath in the river. Rose walked into the cool water with a small brush to wash them. Suddenly, a baby elephant walked right up to her. He put his long trunk into the river and playfully sprayed muddy water all over Rose! Her hair and her favourite shirt were completely wet and dirty.

The other volunteers looked worried, but Rose wasn't angry. She thought the baby elephant was very funny and she started laughing loudly. She walked back to her small room, had a quick wash, and changed into a clean t-shirt. Then she ran back outside to join her friends.

For the rest of the day, Rose helped to feed the hungry elephants. She gave them lots of sweet yellow bananas, which they ate very quickly. Rose felt really pleased with her holiday. Because she loved the experience so much, she is planning to start an animal club at her school next month. She wants to collect money to send to the elephant park!

14   Why did Rose travel to Thailand?

A to spend time at the beach

B to do some work with animals

C to visit her aunt on holiday

15   How did Rose feel about her first job?

A She was glad to do it.

B She thought it was too dirty.

C She didn't like waking up early.

16   What did the baby elephant do?

A It made Rose's clothes wet and dirty.

B It took the small brush from Rose's hand.

C It drank some muddy water from the river.

17   What did Rose do after the elephant sprayed her?

A She told the other volunteers not to worry.

B She put on some different clothes.

C She decided to stay inside her room.

18   What is Rose planning to do at her school?

A begin a new group to help the animals

B ask her classmates to feed the elephants

C give a talk about her special holiday

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says Rose travelled to Thailand "to work as a volunteer" and "wanted to help look after them [the elephants]." Option A is wrong logic; the text explicitly states she "didn't go on a normal beach holiday." Option C is a partial truth; she travelled with her aunt, but she didn't go to Thailand to visit her aunt.

15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because even though the job was dirty, Rose "didn't mind" and "felt happy to be so close to the amazing animals." Option B is wrong logic; the area was dirty, but she didn't complain that it was too dirty. Option C is a partial truth trap; she woke up early, but the text never says she didn't like doing it.

16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the elephant "sprayed muddy water all over Rose" and her shirt became "completely wet and dirty." Option B is wrong logic; Rose was holding a brush, but the elephant didn't take it from her. Option C is a partial truth; it put its trunk in the river, but it sprayed the water at Rose, it didn't drink it.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Rose went to her room and "changed into a clean t-shirt." Option A is wrong reference; the volunteers looked worried, but Rose just laughed—she didn't tell them not to worry. Option C is wrong logic; she went to her room to wash and change, but she "ran back outside" rather than staying inside.

18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Rose says she is "planning to start an animal club at her school" to collect money for the park. Option B is wrong logic; she wants to collect money, but her classmates cannot feed the elephants from their school. Option C is a partial truth; she wants to start a club, but the text doesn't mention giving a talk about her holiday.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    The friendly baker

Fourteen-year-old Sam writes about a special person he met on holiday.

Hi, I’m Sam and I’m 14 years old. Last summer, I went on a wonderful holiday to a small town in Italy with my family. Every morning, I woke up early and walked to a friendly local bakery at the end of our street. I loved going there because I wanted to practise speaking Italian and try their amazing sweet food.

The owner of the shop was a kind old man named Marco. He was always very happy to see me walking into his shop. I usually bought exactly the same thing: a delicious chocolate pastry. Marco always smiled and helped me to learn the correct Italian words for the food. Soon, we became good friends, even though we couldn't say very much to each other.

However, one morning, something quite embarrassing happened. I ordered my favourite chocolate pastry, but when I looked inside my pocket, I only had a few small coins. I didn't have enough cash to pay for it. I felt really bad about my mistake. I tried to use my Italian to tell Marco that I couldn't buy the food that day.

But Marco just laughed and put the fresh pastry into a small paper bag. He gave it to me and said it was a free gift. I was incredibly pleased! On my final day in Italy, I returned to the bakery to say goodbye. I gave Marco a beautiful postcard from my hometown in England as a thank you present. He loved it, and I am definitely going to send him a letter next Christmas!

14   Why did Sam visit the bakery every morning?

A He wanted to improve his Italian and eat nice things.

B His parents asked him to buy sweet food for them.

C He enjoyed helping the friendly baker with his work.

15   How did Marco help Sam?

A He showed Sam the best way to make chocolate food.

B He taught Sam the names of the food in Italian.

C He told Sam lots of stories about his good friends.

16   What problem did Sam have one morning?

A He forgot which pastry he usually ordered.

B He didn't take enough money to the shop with him.

C He made a big mistake when he spoke in Italian.

17   What did Marco do when Sam couldn't pay?

A He told Sam to bring the money on his last day.

B He gave the sweet food to Sam without asking for money.

C He asked Sam to give him an English present instead.

18   What is Sam planning to do in the future?

A post some mail to the baker in the winter

B return to the small town in Italy next year

C give the shop owner another English postcard

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Sam says, "I wanted to practise speaking Italian and try their amazing sweet food." Option B is wrong logic; he went with his family on holiday, but the text never says his parents asked him to buy food for them. Option C uses the word "friendly," but is wrong logic because he went there as a customer, not to help the baker work.

15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text states that Marco "helped me to learn the correct Italian words for the food." Option A is wrong logic; Marco sold the food to Sam, but he didn't teach him how to make it. Option C is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; they "became good friends," but Marco didn't tell stories about his friends.

16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Sam says, "I only had a few small coins. I didn't have enough cash to pay for it." Option A is wrong logic; he ordered his "favourite chocolate pastry," so he didn't forget his order. Option C is a partial truth; he made a mistake (forgetting his money) and he tried to speak Italian, but he didn't make a big mistake speaking the language.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Marco put the pastry in a bag and "said it was a free gift." Option A is wrong logic; Sam returned on his last day, but Marco didn't ask him to bring money then. Option C is a wrong reference; Sam gave him a present (the postcard), but Marco gave him the pastry for free and never asked for a present.

18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final sentence, Sam says, "I am definitely going to send him a letter next Christmas!" (winter). Option B is wrong logic; he was in Italy on his last day, but he doesn't say he is going back next year. Option C is a partial truth; he already gave him an English postcard as a thank you, but in the future, he plans to send a letter, not another postcard.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      Working in the countryside

Sixteen-year-old Tina writes a review about her summer trip to a community farm.

My name is Tina and I am 16 years old. Usually, I spend my summer holidays relaxing at the beach or playing video games with my friends at home. However, this year I wanted to do something completely different. I spent two amazing weeks living and working on a community farm in the countryside. I am writing this review to tell other teenagers about my special trip.

Life on the farm was very interesting, and my favourite job of all was picking the fruit. The farmers grew a lot of apples and strawberries. I really loved eating the fresh strawberries straight from the plants! They were sweet and warm from the sun, and they tasted much better than the cold ones you normally buy in a supermarket.

However, there was one big problem with the trip. Farm work is not easy, and you have to be quite strong to do it well. Every morning, I had to carry large, heavy boxes of fruit across the fields. Because of this, my arms ached terribly after the first three days. I felt extremely tired and I actually wanted to stop and go home. But I decided to stay, and my body slowly got stronger.

Overall, I think spending time on a community farm is a wonderful experience. You can spend lots of time outside in nature and eat delicious food. I definitely recommend it! But I have one very important piece of advice if you decide to go. You must bring some thick gardening gloves with you. When you pull the fruit off the trees, the wood can cut you. Good gloves will easily protect your hands from scratches while you work.

14   Why did Tina write this review?

A to tell readers about her experience on a farm

B to explain why teenagers should play video games

C to describe a relaxing beach holiday with friends

15   What did Tina like most about the strawberries?

A eating them immediately from the plant

B buying them from a local supermarket

C growing them in the warm summer sun

16   Why did Tina want to go home early?

A She was asked to work in the fields by herself.

B She didn't want to wake up early every morning.

C Her arms hurt a lot from doing the hard work.

17   What advice does Tina give to visitors?

A Bring lots of delicious food to eat.

B Wear something to keep your hands safe.

C Only pull the fruit from the smallest trees.

18   What is the best title for this review?

A How to grow the perfect summer fruit

B Hard work and great food on a farm

C A terrible summer trip to the countryside

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Tina says "I spent two amazing weeks living and working on a community farm... I am writing this review to tell other teenagers about my special trip." This matches option A. Option B uses vocabulary from the text (video games, teenagers) but she didn't write the review to talk about games. Option C is wrong logic; she usually goes to the beach, but she wrote the review because she did something "completely different" this year.

15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Tina says "I really loved eating the fresh strawberries straight from the plants!" This means she ate them immediately from the plant (Option A). Option B is wrong logic; she says the farm fruit tastes better than the supermarket fruit, not that she bought them there. Option C is a partial truth trap; the fruit was warm from the sun, but the farmers grew them, not Tina (she just picked and ate them).

16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Tina explains that she had to carry heavy boxes and "my arms ached terribly... I felt extremely tired and I actually wanted to stop and go home." This makes Option C correct. Option A is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions fields, but doesn't say she worked by herself. Option B is a partial truth trap; she had to work every morning, but the text never says waking up early was the reason she wanted to go home.

17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Tina's advice is to "bring some thick gardening gloves" because "gloves will easily protect your hands from scratches". This matches Option B (keep your hands safe). Option A is a wrong logic trap; she says you can eat delicious food on the farm, not that you should bring it. Option C is a partial truth trap; she mentions pulling fruit off trees, but she doesn't tell people to only use small trees.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The review focuses on how much hard work the farm was (heavy boxes, aching arms) but also how wonderful it was to be in nature and eat fresh fruit. Option B covers both the good and bad parts of the trip. Option A is a wrong logic trap; she picked fruit, but she doesn't teach the reader how to grow it. Option C is wrong because she says the trip was an "amazing" and "wonderful experience," not terrible.
