A special picture of Paris
Sometimes you can make great friends when you do your hobbies!
Fourteen-year-old Will loves art. Last month, he went on a family holiday to Paris, the capital city of France. Will's parents took lots of pictures of the beautiful streets with their cameras. But Will didn't want to just take photos. He loves drawing, so he decided to sit down and draw a picture of the famous Eiffel Tower. He wanted to make something special to take home.
Will found a quiet place to sit on the grass near the tall tower. He took his favourite sketching pencil and a large piece of paper out of his bag. He looked carefully at the building and started to draw the bottom part of it. At first, everything was going perfectly, and Will felt very happy with his picture.
However, after twenty minutes, Will had a problem. He pressed too hard on the paper, and his only good pencil broke! Will looked in his bag, but he didn't have a sharpener to fix it. He couldn't finish his drawing. He felt quite sad and thought he had to stop.
Just then, an older street artist who was painting nearby saw Will's problem. The kind man walked over and lent Will a small metal sharpener. Will quickly fixed his pencil and finished his picture.
When Will finished, the street artist looked at the drawing. He smiled and told Will that he had a lot of talent. Will felt extremely proud of his work. Because he loved this exciting experience, Will is going to take art classes at school next year so he can become a professional artist too!
14 Why did Will draw a picture of the Eiffel Tower?
A He couldn't use his parents' cameras to take photos.
B He wanted to create a special memory to keep.
C His parents asked him to draw the beautiful streets.
15 Where was Will when he started his drawing?
A high up inside the tall tower
B walking around the city centre
C on a quiet piece of grass
16 Why did Will feel sad after twenty minutes?
A He was unable to repair his broken pencil.
B He used the wrong kind of paper for his drawing.
C He lost his favourite pencil inside his bag.
17 How did the street artist help Will?
A He finished drawing the picture for Will.
B He let Will borrow a useful tool.
C He showed Will how to paint the tower.
18 What is Will planning to do next year?
A start having lessons to improve his art
B work as a street artist in Paris
C give his picture to a professional artist
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Will decided to draw a picture because he "wanted to make something special to take home". Option A is wrong logic; the text says he "didn't want to just take photos", not that he couldn't use a camera. Option C is a wrong reference trap; his parents took photos of the streets, but they didn't ask him to draw them.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text states Will "found a quiet place to sit on the grass near the tall tower." Option A is a wrong reference trap; he was near the tower, not inside it. Option B is a wrong reference trap; his parents were taking pictures of the streets, but Will was sitting still on the grass.
16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Will's pencil broke and he "didn't have a sharpener to fix it" (unable to repair it). Option B is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions a large piece of paper, but he didn't use the wrong kind. Option C is a partial truth trap; he looked in his bag, but he didn't lose the pencil (it was just broken).
17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the artist "lent Will a small metal sharpener" (borrow a useful tool). Option A is wrong logic; the artist gave him a sharpener, but Will "finished his picture" himself. Option C is a partial truth trap; the artist was painting nearby, but he didn't teach Will how to paint.
18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Will says he is "going to take art classes at school next year". Option B is a wrong logic trap; he met a street artist in Paris, but he plans to take classes, not work as an artist in Paris next year. Option C is a wrong reference trap; he wants to become a professional artist, but he isn't giving his picture away.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Big art in the city!
Fifteen-year-old Xena writes a blog about her trip to an art festival.
My name is Xena and I am 15 years old. Last weekend, I went on an exciting trip to Berlin with my family. We travelled there to see a famous street art festival. I love drawing and painting, so I was really excited about this holiday. I am writing this blog to share my experience with other teenagers who like art.
The festival was absolutely fantastic. We walked around the city and looked at all the amazing pictures on the walls. The best thing about the street art was the size of the paintings. Some of them were huge! They covered whole buildings from the bottom to the top. The artists used lots of bright colours, and the pictures looked incredibly real.
However, there was one big problem during our trip. The festival gave us a paper map to help us find all the paintings. But the map was very hard to understand. Many of the best pictures were hidden in small, quiet streets. Because of the bad map, we spent a lot of time walking in the wrong direction and getting lost. It was quite annoying.
Overall, I think a street art festival is a wonderful place to visit for a holiday. You can see beautiful things and learn about different artists. If you decide to go next year, I have one important piece of advice. Don't use a map! Instead, just look for big groups of people carrying cameras. If you follow them, they will take you straight to the most amazing artwork in the city!
14 Why did Xena travel to Berlin?
A to visit her family for the weekend
B to take part in a painting competition
C to attend a special art event
15 What did Xena like most about the paintings?
A They were extremely large.
B They were painted by famous people.
C They were on the walls of her hotel.
16 Why did Xena feel annoyed during the trip?
A The festival forgot to give her a map.
B She got lost because the map was bad.
C The small streets were too crowded with people.
17 What advice does Xena give to other visitors?
A Walk behind the crowds to find the best pictures.
B Ask people with cameras to give you directions.
C Remember to take lots of photos of the art.
18 What is the best title for this blog?
A How to paint your own amazing street art
B The best art museums to visit in Berlin
C A great art trip, but forget about the map
Answer Key & Explanations
14 C - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Xena says "We travelled there to see a famous street art festival." This matches option C (a special art event). Option A is a partial truth trap; she travelled with her family, not to visit them. Option B is a wrong logic trap; she loves drawing and painting, but she went to look at art, not to take part in a competition.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Xena says "The best thing about the street art was the size of the paintings. Some of them were huge!" This matches option A (extremely large). Option B is a wrong logic trap; the festival is famous (mentioned in paragraph 1), but she doesn't say the artists were famous people. Option C is a partial truth trap; the paintings were on walls, but she doesn't mention her hotel.
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Xena explains that "Because of the bad map, we spent a lot of time walking in the wrong direction and getting lost." This makes option B correct. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the festival did give her a map, but it was hard to understand. Option C uses vocabulary from the text (small streets) but changes the meaning; the text never says the small streets were crowded.
17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Xena advises visitors to "look for big groups of people... follow them, they will take you straight to the most amazing artwork". Following people means walking behind them (Option A). Option B is a wrong logic trap; she says to follow the people with cameras, not to speak to them and ask for directions. Option C is a partial truth trap; it mentions cameras, but her advice is to follow the people carrying them, not to take photos yourself.
18 C - Explanation: This is a global question testing the main idea of the blog. The text is a review of an art trip that was fantastic but had a problem with the map, leading to her final advice to not use one. Option C perfectly summarises this. Option A is wrong logic; she talks about a street art festival, but does not teach the reader how to paint. Option B is a partial truth trap; she talks about art in Berlin, but it was on the streets, not in museums.

For each question, choose the correct answer.
A spicy cooking class
Sixteen-year-old Yara writes about an activity she did on holiday.
Hi, I'm Yara and I am 16 years old. Last month, I went on a wonderful holiday to Thailand with my parents. I really love Thai food, especially a famous noodle dish called Pad Thai. Because I wanted to learn how to make it, I decided to go to a half-day cooking class in the city. My parents wanted to go to the beach, so I went to the class alone.
The cooking class was in a beautiful outdoor kitchen. First, the friendly chef showed all the students the fresh food we needed to use. He gave everyone a small basket. We walked around a garden and picked fresh vegetables, sweet sugar, and sour limes. Then, we went back to our tables to start cooking our noodles.
Everything was going very well until I made a big mistake. The chef told us to cut one small red chili pepper and put it in our pan. I wasn't listening carefully because I was busy taking a photo. I chopped three chili peppers and threw them all into my food! When I tasted the noodles, they were really spicy. My mouth felt very hot, and I was worried I couldn't eat my lunch.
I quickly thought of a good idea to fix my dish. I added lots of extra sugar and some lime juice to the pan and mixed it well. When the chef tasted my Pad Thai, he smiled. He was very pleased with my quick thinking because the food tasted fantastic! I felt really proud of myself. Next weekend, I am going to invite my friends to my house and cook this amazing meal for them!
14 Why did Yara go to the cooking class?
A She wanted to find a good restaurant to eat Pad Thai.
B She wanted to learn how to cook a special dish.
C She wanted to spend the morning with her parents.
15 What did the students do before they started cooking?
A They walked to a market to buy fresh vegetables.
B They watched the chef making some noodles.
C They collected the food they needed from a garden.
16 Why did Yara put too many chili peppers in her pan?
A She didn't hear the chef because of a loud noise.
B She was doing something else with her camera.
C She wanted her lunch to be very hot and spicy.
17 How did Yara solve her problem?
A She mixed some sweet and sour things into the noodles.
B She asked the friendly chef to help her cook it again.
C She quickly threw her hot food away in the garden.
18 What is Yara planning to do in the future?
A travel to Thailand again next weekend
B go to a new cooking class with her friends
C make a great meal for her friends at home
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Yara says she loves Pad Thai and "Because I wanted to learn how to make it, I decided to go to a half-day cooking class." Option A is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; she wanted to make Pad Thai, not look for a restaurant to eat it in. Option C is a wrong reference; her parents went to the beach, so she went alone.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text states that they "walked around a garden and picked fresh vegetables, sweet sugar, and sour limes." Option A is a partial truth; they got fresh vegetables, but they picked them in a garden, they didn't walk to a market to buy them. Option B is wrong logic; the chef showed them the fresh food, but they didn't watch him make noodles.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Yara says she wasn't listening carefully "because I was busy taking a photo" (using her camera). Option A is wrong logic; she didn't hear him because she was taking a photo, not because of a loud noise. Option C is the opposite of the truth; she made a mistake and was worried it was too spicy, she didn't want it to be that hot.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says she "added lots of extra sugar [sweet] and some lime juice [sour] to the pan and mixed it well." Option B is a wrong reference; the chef smiled and was pleased when he tasted it, but he didn't help her cook it again. Option C is wrong logic; she fixed her food and the chef tasted it, she didn't throw it away.
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final sentence Yara says, "Next weekend, I am going to invite my friends to my house and cook this amazing meal for them!" Option A is a wrong reference; she mentions next weekend, but she is cooking at her house, not travelling to Thailand again. Option B is wrong logic; she is going to cook for her friends, not take them to a new cooking class.
