Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A special travel book
Sometimes a mistake can make something even better!
Twelve-year-old Clara was on a long train journey with her family last weekend. They were travelling home from a lovely holiday in the mountains. Clara loves art and making things. During the trip, she decided to make a travel scrapbook to remember all the fun they had. She took out a large empty book, some small scissors, and a bottle of glue from her bag.
Clara had a small box full of things from the holiday. There were bus tickets, pretty pieces of paper, and pictures of trees. She spent two hours carefully cutting the paper and gluing everything onto the pages of her book. She felt very happy because the book was looking beautiful, and the long train ride wasn't boring at all.
Then, Clara wanted to use her favourite thing from the trip. It was a large, colourful ticket from a famous science museum. She put a lot of glue on the back of the ticket and pushed it hard onto the paper. But when she looked at it, she was quite upset. She accidentally glued the beautiful ticket completely upside down!
Clara couldn't take the ticket off because the glue was already dry. She didn't want to throw the page away, so she thought of a clever idea. She took a black pen and drew a funny little bat sleeping under the ticket. It looked like the animal was hanging upside down from the paper!
When she showed it to her parents, they laughed and said it was brilliant. Now, that mistake is actually Clara's favourite page in the whole book! Because she enjoyed this activity so much, Clara is planning to make a different scrapbook for her school friends when the summer holidays begin.
14 Why did Clara decide to make a scrapbook?
A She wanted to remember her family holiday.
B Her parents bought her a new art book.
C She needed to finish some school work.
15 How did Clara feel while she was working on her book?
A pleased because it was looking so good
B bored because the train journey was very long
C tired because she worked hard for two hours
16 What problem did Clara have with her museum ticket?
A She didn't use enough glue to keep it on the page.
B She put it on the paper the wrong way up.
C She cut the colourful ticket into the wrong shape.
17 How did Clara fix her mistake?
A She carefully took the dry ticket off the page.
B She added a picture of an animal to the page.
C She threw the page away and started a new one.
18 What is Clara going to do in the future?
A make a new book for her classmates
B buy a better scrapbook for her next trip
C show her museum ticket to her teachers
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says she made it "to remember all the fun they had" on their holiday in the mountains. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she took out a large book from her bag, but the text doesn't say her parents bought it for her. Option C is wrong logic; she did it because she loves art and wanted to remember her trip, not for school work.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text states she felt very happy (pleased) "because the book was looking beautiful". Option B is wrong logic; the journey was long, but the text explicitly says "the long train ride wasn't boring at all." Option C is a partial truth trap; she spent two hours working, but the text doesn't say she felt tired from it.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Clara accidentally glued the ticket "completely upside down" (the wrong way up). Option A is wrong logic; she actually "put a lot of glue on the back". Option C is a wrong reference trap; she was cutting pieces of paper earlier, but she didn't cut the museum ticket into the wrong shape.
17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Clara "took a black pen and drew a funny little bat" (an animal) next to the ticket. Option A is wrong logic; the text says she "couldn't take the ticket off because the glue was already dry". Option C is wrong logic; she specifically "didn't want to throw the page away".
18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Clara says she is "planning to make a different scrapbook for her school friends" (classmates). Option B is a partial truth trap; she is making another scrapbook, but it is for her friends, not for a new trip. Option C is a wrong reference trap; she made the book for her school friends, but the text never says she will show the ticket to her teachers.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Dancing in Spain!
Fourteen-year-old Dean writes a blog about trying a traditional dance on holiday.
My name is Dean and I am 14 years old. Last month, my family and I went on a wonderful summer holiday to Spain. While we were there, I really wanted to try something completely new, so I went to a special dance class. I learned how to do flamenco, which is a very famous traditional Spanish dance. I am writing this blog to tell other teenagers about my interesting experience.
The dance class was absolutely fantastic. Flamenco is a very exciting dance because the guitar music is incredibly fast. You have to move your arms high in the air and hit the floor hard with your feet. Feeling the rhythm of the music was brilliant, and I really enjoyed moving so quickly. It was quite difficult to learn the steps at first, but I had a lot of fun with the other students in the room.
However, there was one big problem for me during the lesson. When I went to the class, I wore my favourite sports shoes. Because my shoes were very soft, my feet didn't make any sound at all when I hit the floor. The dance teacher made a fantastic, loud noise with her feet, but I was completely quiet! It was quite annoying because making a loud noise is actually the best part of the dance.
Overall, trying a traditional dance in another country is a great activity to do on your holiday. If you ever decide to try flamenco, I have one very important piece of advice for you. You should politely ask the dance teacher to borrow some hard wooden shoes. If you wear those, you will make a brilliant noise and you will feel like a real Spanish dancer!
14 Why did Dean write this blog?
A to teach other teenagers how to dance flamenco
B to share his experience of a new activity with others
C to explain why his family chose to visit Spain
15 What did Dean enjoy doing in the class?
A moving his body fast to the music
B learning how to play the Spanish guitar
C teaching the new steps to the other students
16 Why was Dean annoyed during the lesson?
A He forgot to bring his favourite sports shoes with him.
B The dance teacher made too much noise with her feet.
C His shoes were too soft to make a loud sound on the floor.
17 What advice does Dean give to future dancers?
A Get some different shoes from the instructor.
B Buy some special wooden shoes while in Spain.
C Be polite when you talk to real Spanish dancers.
18 What is the best title for this blog?
A The best traditional Spanish music to listen to
B A fun dance class, but remember to wear the right shoes
C How to teach a dance class on your summer holiday
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Dean says, "I am writing this blog to tell other teenagers about my interesting experience", which matches option B. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he learned how to dance, but he is not teaching the readers how to do it. Option C is a partial truth trap; he travelled to Spain with his family, but he wrote the blog to talk about the dance class, not to explain why they went to Spain.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Dean states, "Feeling the rhythm of the music was brilliant, and I really enjoyed moving so quickly." This matches option A. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text mentions "guitar music", but Dean didn't play the guitar himself. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the text says the steps were difficult for him to learn, not that he taught them to others.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Dean explains that "Because my shoes were very soft, my feet didn't make any sound at all... It was quite annoying". This makes option C correct. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he actually wore his favourite sports shoes, he didn't forget them. Option B is a partial truth trap; the teacher made a loud noise, but Dean wasn't annoyed by her—he was annoyed because his own feet were quiet.
17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Dean advises readers to "ask the dance teacher to borrow some hard wooden shoes", which matches option A (get some different shoes from the instructor). Option B is a wrong logic trap; he tells people to borrow shoes from the teacher, not buy them in Spain. Option C uses vocabulary from the text (politely ask, real Spanish dancer) but changes the meaning completely.
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog is a review of an amazing dance class that had one big problem (soft shoes making no noise), ending with the advice to borrow the right shoes. Option B perfectly captures this whole message. Option A is a partial truth trap; the text mentions fast Spanish music, but the blog is about dancing, not just listening to music. Option C is wrong logic; Dean was a student, not a teacher.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A wet day at the movies
Fifteen-year-old Eva writes about visiting a famous place on holiday.
Hi, I’m Eva, and I’m 15 years old. Last month, I went on an amazing holiday to New Zealand with my family. I love watching films, so I was really excited about this trip. We planned to visit the beautiful green hills where my favourite fantasy movie was filmed. I wanted to see exactly where the actors stood to make the movie.
When we woke up on the morning of our trip, the weather was terrible. It was cold and it rained very hard. We drove to the movie location, but everything looked completely different from the film. In the movie, the hills are bright and magical. But on our trip, the ground was just dark and really muddy.
I felt quite sad at first. I wanted to take some fantastic photos to show my friends at school, but I didn't want to get my camera wet in the heavy rain. My dad saw that I was unhappy, so he took me to a small tourist shop near the hills. I bought a bright yellow raincoat and put it on immediately.
Suddenly, I felt much better! I walked back outside into the rain and started taking lots of photos. Because the sky was dark and I was wearing bright yellow, the pictures actually looked brilliant. It felt like I was in a real adventure movie! I had a wonderful day in the end. When I go back to school next week, I am going to show my wet adventure photos to my film club!
14 Why was Eva excited to visit New Zealand?
A She wanted to see a place where a famous film was made.
B She hoped to meet some actors from her favourite movie.
C She planned to act in a new fantasy adventure film.
15 What surprised Eva about the movie location?
A The hills looked dark instead of beautiful and bright.
B There were too many cars driving on the muddy hills.
C The weather was much hotter than it was in the film.
16 Why didn't Eva take pictures at the beginning of the trip?
A She left her camera in a small tourist shop.
B She couldn't find the fantastic photos for her friends.
C She was worried the rain would break her camera.
17 How did Eva feel about the photos she took in the rain?
A She was very pleased with how they looked.
B She thought they looked completely terrible.
C She wished she had worn a different colour.
18 What is Eva planning to do next week?
A start a new adventure film club with her friends
B share her holiday pictures with a group at school
C buy a new yellow coat for her next school trip
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Eva says they planned to visit the green hills "where my favourite fantasy movie was filmed." Option B is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; she wanted to see "where the actors stood," not actually meet the actors themselves. Option C is wrong logic; she wanted to visit the set of a movie, not act in one.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says in the movie the hills are "bright and magical," but on her trip they were "dark and really muddy." Option B is wrong logic; they drove to the location, but the text never says cars were driving on the hills. Option C is the opposite of the truth; the text clearly states it was "cold," not hotter.
16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Eva says, "I didn't want to get my camera wet in the heavy rain." Option A is a wrong reference; her dad took her to the tourist shop later, but she didn't leave her camera there. Option B is wrong logic; she wanted to take fantastic photos to show her friends, not find photos that were lost.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Eva says, "the pictures actually looked brilliant" (pleased with how they looked). Option B is the opposite of the truth; she thought they looked brilliant, not terrible. Option C is wrong logic; she says the photos looked great because she was wearing bright yellow, so she didn't wish for a different colour.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final sentence, Eva states, "When I go back to school next week, I am going to show my wet adventure photos to my film club!" (share her pictures with a group). Option A is a partial truth; she is going to her film club, but she isn't starting a new one. Option C is a wrong reference; she bought the coat on the trip, she doesn't plan to buy one next week.
