Ian's food label guide

Fifteen-year-old Ian writes about understanding what we eat and drink.

Hello! I'm 15-year-old Ian. Do you know what is really inside your food? Sometimes it is very difficult to understand the information on food packets when you are shopping in the supermarket. Last week, I found a brilliant new mobile guide for teenagers. It is a smart app on my phone that helps me read food labels easily. I want to tell you about my experience with it.

I usually buy a special fruit juice from the shop. I always thought it was very good for my body. However, when I used the new mobile guide to check the bottle, I was completely surprised. The app showed me that my favourite drink didn't have much real fruit in it at all. It was actually full of sugar and other unhealthy things. I felt very sad because I drank it every day.

The app is definitely useful, but there is a small problem. The labels on the back of supermarket food are often very tiny. I had to stand in the shop for a long time to read all the information carefully with my phone camera. If you are in a hurry, it is not easy to check everything you want to buy.

Because of this, I have a different plan now. I think the best idea is to stop buying sweet juice in plastic bottles. Instead, you should just buy fresh oranges from the local market. You can take them home and make the juice yourself in your own kitchen. This is the only way to be completely sure that you are having a healthy drink!

14   What does Ian's new phone app do?

A It makes the information on food easier to understand.

B It tells him which supermarket is the cheapest.

C It helps him to find his favourite food in the shop.

15   What did Ian learn about his favourite juice?

A It contained a lot of unhealthy sugar.

B It didn't taste like real fruit anymore.

C He drank too much of it every single day.

16   What is the problem with checking food in the shop?

A It takes a lot of time to read the labels.

B The phone camera doesn't work in the supermarket.

C The words on Ian's mobile phone are too small.

17   What is Ian's advice at the end of the blog?

A Make your own drinks at home.

B Check your plastic bottles carefully.

C Eat fresh oranges at the market.

18   What is the best title for this blog?

A What is really inside our drinks?

B How to use your new mobile phone

C The best supermarket for fresh fruit

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text says the app "helps me read food labels easily" and makes it easier to understand "information on food packets". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; he mentions the supermarket, but the app doesn't check prices. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the app reads labels, it doesn't find the food for you.

15 A - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that his favourite drink "didn't have much real fruit in it at all. It was actually full of sugar". Option A matches this perfectly. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text says it didn't have much real fruit, but he didn't say the taste changed. Option C is a partial truth trap; he did drink it every day, but the new thing he learned was about the bad sugar inside it.

16 A - Explanation: The third paragraph states that Ian "had to stand in the shop for a long time to read all the information carefully". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is wrong logic; the app and camera work fine, the problem is being in a hurry. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the text says the "labels on the back of supermarket food are often very tiny," not the words on his phone.

17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Ian says "you should just buy fresh oranges... take them home and make the juice yourself". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is wrong logic; he advises to "stop buying" plastic bottles, not to check them carefully. Option C is a partial truth trap; he advises buying oranges at the market, but to take them home to make juice, not to eat them at the market.

18 A - Explanation: The text focuses on Ian checking the ingredients of his favourite juice and advising people to make sure they know what they are drinking. Option A covers this main idea perfectly. Option B is too broad; the text is about a specific food app, not how to use a whole phone. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he mentions the supermarket and the market, but the blog isn't a review of the best place to buy fruit.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    A sweet green drink

16-year-old Jenny writes about learning to eat a healthy new food.

Hi, I’m Jenny, and I’m 16 years old. I love dancing, and I practise with my dance team three times a week. However, last month, I started feeling very tired during my classes. I couldn't jump high or move fast. Because of this, my mum took me to see a doctor. He said my body needed more iron to give me energy. You can get iron from eating dark green vegetables.

My mother wanted to help me get better quickly. The next day, she bought a really big bag of spinach from the local supermarket. When it was time for dinner, she cooked the leaves in a pot of very hot water. She put a huge bowl of the hot, wet spinach on the table for me.

I tried to eat it, but it was terrible! The dark green leaves were very soft, and they tasted quite bitter. I couldn't finish my meal. I felt sad because I really wanted to be strong for my dance team, but I just couldn't eat that awful hot spinach.

The next morning, my mum had a much better idea. This time, she didn't cook the spinach. Instead, she put the fresh leaves into a machine with some milk, a banana, and some sweet red berries. She mixed it all together and made a cold fruit smoothie.

I drank it quickly, and it was delicious! The fruit made it taste very sweet, so I didn't taste the spinach at all. Now, I feel fantastic, and my dancing is better than ever. In fact, I am going to make this green drink for all my friends on the team before our next competition!

14   Why did Jenny go to see a doctor?

A She hurt her leg while jumping in a dance class.

B She felt too tired during her dance practices.

C She wanted to learn about dark green vegetables.

15   What did Jenny's mother do to help her?

A She bought some special food from the doctor.

B She prepared a large bowl of hot vegetables.

C She asked Jenny to cook a big bag of spinach.

16   Why was Jenny sad about her dinner?

A She knew she could not eat the terrible food.

B She was too tired to finish her whole meal.

C She thought she had to leave her dance team.

17   What did Jenny's mother do the next morning?

A She cooked a new hot meal using sweet fruit.

B She bought a delicious smoothie from a shop.

C She prepared an uncooked drink with the spinach.

18   What is Jenny planning to do soon?

A prepare her new favourite drink for other people

B dance in a competition against her friends

C teach her dance team how to cook vegetables

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Jenny says that she went to the doctor because "I started feeling very tired during my classes" and "couldn't jump high" (B). Option A is a partial truth trap; she mentions jumping and her dance class, but she didn't hurt her leg. Option C is wrong logic; the doctor told her about the dark green vegetables after she arrived, so it wasn't her reason for going.

15 B - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Jenny's mother "cooked the leaves in a pot of very hot water" and "put a huge bowl of the hot, wet spinach on the table", which matches option B. Option A is a wrong reference trap; her mother bought food, but she got it from the supermarket, not from the doctor. Option C is wrong logic; her mother cooked the spinach herself, she didn't ask Jenny to do it.

16 A - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Jenny explains that she felt sad because she "couldn't eat that awful hot spinach", meaning she knew she couldn't eat the terrible food (A). Option B is a wrong logic trap; she couldn't finish the meal because it tasted bitter and terrible, not because she was tired. Option C is a partial truth trap; she mentions her dance team, but she was sad because she wanted to be strong for them, not because she had to leave.

17 C - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Jenny says her mother "didn't cook the spinach" and "made a cold fruit smoothie", which means she prepared an uncooked drink (C). Option A is wrong logic; she used sweet fruit, but she made a cold drink, not a hot meal. Option B is a partial truth trap; there is a smoothie, but her mother made it at home instead of buying it from a shop.

18 A - Explanation: This is a specific detail question focused on the final paragraph. Jenny states, "I am going to make this green drink for all my friends on the team", which means she will prepare the drink for other people (A). Option B is a wrong logic trap; she mentions a competition, but she will dance with her friends on the team, not against them. Option C is wrong logic; she is making a cold, raw drink for her friends, not teaching them how to cook vegetables.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      A difficult lesson about food

Fourteen-year-old Kevin writes about a problem he had before a big sports event.

Fourteen-year-old Kevin loves playing tennis. He is a very good player, and last month he reached the final of a big tennis competition. On the evening before the match, he was walking home from practice and felt extremely hungry. He saw a small street van selling fast food. He decided to buy a burger because it was very cheap. However, when he ate it, the meat was quite cold.

Later that evening, Kevin went to bed early because he wanted to rest before his big day. But he didn't sleep for very long. At three o'clock in the morning, he suddenly woke up. He had a terrible pain in his stomach and felt really ill. He went to the bathroom and couldn't stop being sick. He knew immediately that the cold burger was the problem.

When morning came, Kevin still felt very weak and his stomach hurt a lot. He couldn't even stand up. He was very sad because he had to phone his tennis coach and say he couldn't play in the match. His friend played instead of him. Kevin had to stay in bed all day and drink lots of water.

Kevin was very unhappy to miss the important final, but he learned a very hard lesson. Now, he knows that he must be very careful about what he eats before a sports event. He is never going to buy cheap food from a street van again. Next week, he is going to play in another match, and he plans to prepare a healthy dinner at home the night before.

14   Why did Kevin buy the burger?

A It didn't cost a lot of money.

B He was on his way to tennis practice.

C He wanted to try a new cold food.

15   What happened in the middle of the night?

A Kevin got up to eat his fast food.

B Kevin woke up feeling very sick.

C Kevin couldn't sleep because he was excited.

16   What did Kevin do in the morning?

A He got out of bed to get a drink of water.

B He went to the tennis court to watch his friend.

C He told his coach that he wasn't able to play.

17   What has Kevin learned from this experience?

A He shouldn't go to bed early before a match.

B He needs to choose his food more carefully.

C He must practice harder for his tennis finals.

18   What is Kevin planning to do before his next match?

A make a healthy meal in his own house

B buy some better food from the street van

C go out to a nice restaurant with his family

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text states that Kevin decided to buy the burger "because it was very cheap." Option A perfectly paraphrases this meaning. Option B is a partial truth trap; he was walking home from practice, not on his way to it. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the meat was cold, but he didn't buy it because he wanted cold food.

15 B - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that at three o'clock in the morning, Kevin "suddenly woke up", had a "terrible pain", and "couldn't stop being sick." Option B accurately matches this. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he went to the bathroom because he was sick, not to eat his food. Option C uses wrong logic; he couldn't sleep because he was ill, not because he was excited.

16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, the text says Kevin "had to phone his tennis coach and say he couldn't play in the match." Option C correctly describes this action. Option A is a partial truth trap; he had to drink water, but the text specifically says he "couldn't even stand up" and "had to stay in bed". Option B is wrong logic; his friend played, but Kevin stayed in bed and didn't go to watch.

17 B - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, the text states that Kevin "knows that he must be very careful about what he eats before a sports event." Option B perfectly summarizes this lesson. Option A is a wrong reference trap; he did go to bed early, but that is not the lesson he learned. Option C is a partial truth trap; it mentions tennis finals, but the lesson is about food safety, not practicing harder.

18 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text states that before his next match, Kevin "plans to prepare a healthy dinner at home the night before." Option A correctly paraphrases this future plan. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text says he is "never going to buy cheap food from a street van again." Option C is a wrong reference trap; he is going to eat at home, not go out to a restaurant.
