Tom's new bedtime routine
Fourteen-year-old Tom writes about changing a bad habit.
Fourteen-year-old Tom is a good student, but recently he had a big problem. Every morning, he felt very tired. During his classes, it was difficult for him to keep his eyes open. He was sleepy because he had a bad habit. Every night in bed, he looked at his mobile phone for hours. He watched videos or played games until one o'clock in the morning.
Tom wanted to feel better, so he looked on the internet for advice. He found a clever mobile app that helps teenagers sleep and downloaded it immediately. The app works by locking the phone screen so you cannot use it. Tom set the timer for nine o'clock in the evening. He hoped this would stop him using his phone in bed.
However, the first night did not go very well. At exactly nine o'clock, Tom's phone locked. He lay in the dark, but he couldn't sleep. Without his phone, his bedroom felt very quiet. He felt incredibly bored and a bit worried because he couldn't check his messages. He wanted to unlock his phone, but he tried to stay strong.
After a few minutes, Tom got out of bed and turned on the light. He saw a new science-fiction book on his desk. He picked it up and started to read. The story was so exciting that he forgot all about his phone. After reading for an hour, he finally felt tired and closed his eyes.
The next morning, Tom woke up and felt fantastic. He was full of energy and ready for school. He is going to read a few pages of his book every night from now on, and he plans to keep his phone in another room.
14 Why was Tom so tired at school?
A He spent too much time on his phone at night.
B He had to finish his school work before one o'clock.
C He woke up very early in the morning to play games.
15 What does Tom's new mobile app do?
A It turns off the lights in his bedroom at nine o'clock.
B It gives him advice on how to sleep better.
C It stops him from using his phone after a certain time.
16 How did Tom feel on the first night at nine o'clock?
A worried because he couldn't see his messages
B tired because his bedroom was very quiet
C angry because his mobile phone was broken
17 What happened when Tom started reading the book?
A He decided to use his phone to read the story.
B He fell asleep immediately because it was boring.
C He thought the story was very interesting.
18 What is Tom planning to do in the future?
A wake up earlier to have more energy
B leave his phone in a different room at night
C read a whole book every morning before school
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text explains that Tom was tired because he had a bad habit: "Every night in bed, he looked at his mobile phone for hours." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text mentions "one o'clock" and "classes", but he wasn't doing school work late at night. Option C is wrong logic; he stayed up late to play games, he didn't wake up early to do it.
15 C - Explanation: The second paragraph states that the app "works by locking the phone screen so you cannot use it" and Tom set it for nine o'clock. Option C perfectly matches this. Option A is a wrong reference trap; he set the app for nine o'clock, but it locks his screen, it doesn't turn off his bedroom lights. Option B is a partial truth trap; Tom looked on the internet for "advice", but the app itself just locks the phone.
16 A - Explanation: The third paragraph says that Tom "felt incredibly bored and a bit worried because he couldn't check his messages." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the room was quiet, but he couldn't sleep, so he wasn't feeling tired yet. Option C is wrong logic; he wanted to unlock his phone, but it wasn't broken.
17 C - Explanation: The fourth paragraph explains that "The story was so exciting that he forgot all about his phone." Option C correctly matches this (exciting = very interesting). Option A is a wrong logic trap; he forgot about his phone and picked up a physical book from his desk to read. Option B is a partial truth trap; he did fall asleep, but only "After reading for an hour", not immediately.
18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Tom's future plan is stated clearly: "he plans to keep his phone in another room." Option B matches this perfectly. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he felt full of energy when he woke up, but he isn't planning to wake up earlier. Option C is a partial truth trap; he is going to read "a few pages" every "night", not a whole book in the morning.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A dangerous internet idea!
15-year-old Uma writes about a strange new fitness trend.
Hi! I’m Uma, and I am 15 years old. I usually do normal sports, but last weekend I saw a very popular internet video. A famous fitness teacher was doing a strange new exercise. He only used a small towel to help him get fit. It looked quite interesting, so I decided to try it at home. Today, I am writing this blog to give you my opinion about it.
In the video, the exercise looked really fun and very easy to do. You have to stand on a hard wooden floor without your shoes. Then, you put your feet on the towel and push your legs out. The famous teacher was moving very quickly across the floor. He smiled a lot, so I thought it was a brilliant way to do some exercise.
However, things were very different when I tried it in my bedroom. I put my feet on a soft towel and tried to push my legs out. Immediately, I moved much too fast and I couldn't stop! I slipped on the hard floor and fell down loudly. I hit my knee, and it really hurt. I felt quite angry because the internet video didn't show this problem.
Because of this painful mistake, I have some important advice for everyone. You shouldn't copy everything you see online. In fact, I think teenagers should delete these silly videos from their phones completely. If you want to get strong, just do normal exercises like push-ups instead. You don't need a slippery towel to keep fit, and it is much safer to do things the normal way!
14 What did Uma decide to do last weekend?
A make a popular internet video about getting fit
B try a new way of exercising that she saw online
C buy a small towel to help her do normal sports
15 What did Uma think when she watched the video?
A The fitness teacher needed to put on some shoes.
B The floor was too hard to do the exercise well.
C The activity seemed like a great idea to try.
16 What happened when Uma did the exercise in her bedroom?
A She had an accident because she moved too quickly.
B She hit her knee because her towel was too small.
C She fell down because she couldn't push her legs out.
17 What does Uma advise teenagers to do?
A do normal push-ups with a towel on the floor
B remove some strange fitness videos from their phones
C find a safer way to copy the things they see online
18 Why has Uma written this blog?
A to teach people how to use a towel for exercise
B to share her thoughts on a popular internet exercise
C to complain about a fitness teacher at her school
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Uma says she saw an internet video of a new exercise and states, "I decided to try it at home." This matches option B. Option A is a wrong reference trap; she watched a popular video, but she didn't make one herself. Option C is a partial truth trap; she used a towel, but the text doesn't say she went to buy one, and it wasn't for "normal" sports.
15 C - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Uma states that the exercise "looked really fun" and "I thought it was a brilliant way to do some exercise." This means it seemed like a great idea (C). Option A is a wrong logic trap; the teacher didn't wear shoes, but Uma never thought he needed to wear them. Option B is wrong logic; you need a hard wooden floor for the exercise, so it wasn't too hard.
16 A - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Uma explains that she "moved much too fast" and "slipped on the hard floor and fell down." This means she had an accident because she moved too quickly (A). Option B is a partial truth trap; she hit her knee, but it was because she moved too fast, not because her towel was too small. Option C is wrong logic; she did push her legs out, which caused her to slip and fall.
17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Uma says, "I think teenagers should delete these silly videos from their phones completely," which means they should remove them (B). Option A is a wrong logic trap; she tells readers to do normal push-ups instead of using a slippery towel, not to do them with a towel. Option C is wrong logic; she explicitly says, "You shouldn't copy everything you see online."
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. Throughout the blog, Uma introduces a viral fitness video, describes what it looked like, shares her painful experience trying it, and gives her final recommendation not to copy it. Therefore, she is sharing her thoughts on a popular internet exercise (B). Option A is wrong logic; she tells people not to use a towel for exercise. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the fitness teacher was in a video online, not at her school.

A new way to play
Sixteen-year-old Victor writes about finding a healthy balance.
Sixteen-year-old Victor loves video games. Last year, he played them for hours every day in his bedroom. He was very good at them and wanted to get a job as a professional player in the future. However, there was a big problem. Because he sat at his desk all day looking at a screen, his eyes often hurt. His hands and arms also felt very tired after holding the computer mouse for so long.
One morning, Victor's hands hurt so much that he couldn't hold his school pen. His mother was worried, so she took him to see a doctor. The doctor checked Victor's eyes and hands carefully. She explained that his body needed a long break from the computer. She told Victor he had to stop playing all video games for two weeks.
At first, Victor felt bored and angry about the doctor's rules. He didn't know what to do in his free time. Then, a school friend invited him to try something new. They went to a local sports centre to play table tennis. Victor wasn't very good at the beginning, but he really enjoyed hitting the small ball and running around the table. He loved moving fast and playing a real sport with other people.
After two weeks, Victor's eyes and hands felt much better. He was able to play video games again, but things changed. He decided to join the table tennis club and go there twice a week. Now, he still plays online games, but he spends less time at his desk. He feels much healthier because he balances both of his favourite hobbies. Next month, he is planning to play in a table tennis competition!
14 What did Victor want to do when he was older?
A earn money by playing video games
B buy a better computer screen for his bedroom
C spend more time working at a desk
15 What did the doctor tell Victor to do?
A take a rest from playing on his computer
B stop going to school for two weeks
C try playing a different kind of video game
16 How did Victor feel about his first table tennis game?
A happy that he was moving his body quickly
B angry that he wasn't very good at it
C bored because he played it with his school friend
17 What happened after two weeks?
A Victor felt well enough to use his computer again.
B Victor decided to leave the table tennis club.
C Victor stopped playing online games completely.
18 What is Victor planning to do in the future?
A take part in a real sports event
B find a job at the local sports centre
C teach his friends how to play online games
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text says Victor "wanted to get a job as a professional player in the future." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text says he looked at a screen, but he didn't want to buy a new one. Option C is a wrong logic trap; sitting at a desk caused his health problems, it wasn't his future goal.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, the doctor told Victor "his body needed a long break from the computer" and "he had to stop playing all video games for two weeks." Option A perfectly matches this advice. Option B is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions his "school pen", but the doctor didn't tell him to stop going to school. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he was told to stop playing all video games, not try a different kind.
16 A - Explanation: In the third paragraph, the text states Victor "really enjoyed hitting the small ball" and "loved moving fast". Option A accurately summarizes this feeling (happy = loved/enjoyed; moving his body quickly = moving fast). Option B is a partial truth trap; he wasn't very good at it in the beginning, but he wasn't angry about this (he was angry at the doctor earlier). Option C is a wrong logic trap; he felt bored before his school friend invited him to play, not during the game.
17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, the text says that after two weeks, Victor's "eyes and hands felt much better" and "He was able to play video games again". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; he decided to join the club, not leave it. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the text specifically says "he still plays online games," so he didn't stop completely.
18 A - Explanation: This is a specific detail question based on the final paragraph. The text states that "Next month, he is planning to play in a table tennis competition!" Option A correctly paraphrases this future plan (take part = play in; real sports event = table tennis competition). Option B uses wrong reference; he plays at the sports centre, but he doesn't plan to find a job there. Option C uses wrong logic; he still plays online games, but he isn't planning to teach his friends how to play them.
