Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Chris's painful summer tournament
Fourteen-year-old Chris writes about an important lesson he learned in the sun.
Fourteen-year-old Chris loves playing tennis. He practises every weekend with his friends. Last July, he played in a big outdoor tennis tournament for his sports club. On the morning of the competition, the weather was beautiful, but the sun was incredibly hot. Chris felt very excited about his matches, and he just wanted to start playing. He didn't think about the hot weather at all.
During the tournament, Chris was very busy. He played three long matches in the middle of the day. Because he was only thinking about winning his games, he made a big mistake. He completely forgot to put any sun cream on his skin. He didn't wear a hat either. He just ran around the tennis court for hours in his t-shirt and shorts.
When Chris finally went home in the evening, he had a terrible problem. He looked in the bathroom mirror and saw that his arms and neck were bright red. When he touched his skin, it felt very hot and painful. He felt quite upset because it was hard to move his arms, and he didn't sleep very well that night.
For the rest of the week, Chris had to wear a shirt with long sleeves to protect his skin. He felt very hot and uncomfortable in his winter clothes, but he couldn't wear a t-shirt. However, Chris learned a very important lesson about keeping his skin healthy. He is going to play in another tournament next month, but he plans to put a lot of sun cream in his sports bag first.
14 How did Chris feel on the morning of the competition?
A He was excited to play his matches.
B He was worried about the hot weather.
C He was angry because he had to play outside.
15 What mistake did Chris make at the tournament?
A He didn't use any sun cream.
B He wore the wrong clothes for a tennis match.
C He stopped thinking about winning the competition.
16 What happened when Chris went home?
A His arms and neck were very painful.
B He couldn't look in the bathroom mirror.
C He slept all night because he was so tired.
17 Why did Chris wear long sleeves for the rest of the week?
A to keep his skin safe from the sun
B because the July weather was very cold
C to feel more comfortable after the tournament
18 What is Chris planning to do next month?
A remember to take some sun cream with him
B buy some new long-sleeved clothes for tennis
C play in an indoor sports competition
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text says Chris "felt very excited about his matches". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the sun was incredibly hot, but he "didn't think about the hot weather at all," so he wasn't worried. Option C is wrong logic; he loves playing tennis and wasn't angry.
15 A - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that Chris "completely forgot to put any sun cream on his skin." Option A correctly matches this mistake. Option B is a wrong logic trap; he wore a "t-shirt and shorts", which are normal clothes for a tennis match, so the clothes weren't the mistake. Option C is a partial truth trap reversed; he made the mistake because "he was only thinking about winning", not because he stopped thinking about it.
16 A - Explanation: The third paragraph states that when Chris touched his skin, "it felt very hot and painful." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong logic trap; he had a terrible problem, but he did look in the mirror. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he was tired, but the text says he "didn't sleep very well that night".
17 A - Explanation: The fourth paragraph explains that Chris had to wear long sleeves "to protect his skin." Option A correctly paraphrases this reason. Option B is wrong logic; the tournament was in July and he "felt very hot," so the weather wasn't cold. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he had to wear the clothes, but they actually made him feel "uncomfortable", not more comfortable.
18 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Chris says he "plans to put a lot of sun cream in his sports bag first" when he plays in his next tournament. Option A correctly matches this future plan. Option B is a wrong reference trap; he wore long-sleeved winter clothes this week, but he doesn't plan to buy new ones for tennis. Option C is a partial truth trap; he is going to play in another tournament next month, but the text doesn't say it will be indoor.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A thirty-day fitness journey
15-year-old Diana writes about trying a popular internet challenge.
Hi! I'm Diana, and I'm 15 years old. I always enjoy reading about health and fitness online. Last month, I decided to try a very popular 30-day exercise challenge from the internet. To do this, you have to complete a different, hard workout every day for a whole month. Today, I am writing this blog to tell you all about my experience.
At the beginning, the challenge was absolutely fantastic. Making a clear plan for my fitness was a brilliant idea. Every morning, I woke up early to do the daily exercises before school. I felt really strong, and my body had a lot of energy. Having a daily goal is a great way to stay interested in doing sports.
However, the middle of the month was much more difficult. On day 15, I came home from school and I had a huge amount of homework. I was so busy with my math and science studies that I didn't have time to do my daily workout. Because I missed a day, I felt really sad. I thought I was a complete failure and wanted to stop.
But after that, I learned a very important lesson. I realised that nobody has to be perfect all the time. If you are very tired or busy with school, it is completely fine to take a short rest. You shouldn't stop the challenge completely. You can just do the exercise the next day and finish the month a little bit late!
14 What did Diana have to do for the internet challenge?
A exercise every single day for a month
B read about health on the internet every day
C write a daily blog about her fitness journey
15 What does Diana say about the start of the challenge?
A It gave her energy to play school sports.
B It kept her interested in her fitness.
C It was difficult to wake up early for it.
16 Why did Diana feel like a complete failure?
A She got some bad marks in her science studies.
B She was given too much homework to finish.
C She missed a day of her exercise plan.
17 What is Diana's advice if you are very busy?
A You should stop the challenge completely.
B It is fine to rest and finish a bit later.
C You must try to be perfect all the time.
18 Why has Diana written this blog?
A to teach teenagers some new, hard workouts
B to share her experience of doing a fitness challenge
C to complain about how much homework she gets
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Diana says that for the challenge, "you have to complete a different, hard workout every day for a whole month." This matches option A. Option B is a wrong logic trap; she enjoys reading about health, but the challenge itself is about exercising. Option C is a partial truth trap; she is writing a blog now, but she didn't have to write one every day for the challenge.
15 B - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Diana explains that "Having a daily goal is a great way to stay interested in doing sports", which means it kept her interested in her fitness (B). Option A is a wrong reference trap; she mentions having energy and school, but she did the workout before school, not to play school sports. Option C is wrong logic; she says she woke up early, but she doesn't say it was difficult to do so.
16 C - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Diana states, "Because I missed a day, I felt really sad. I thought I was a complete failure". This matches option C. Option A is a wrong logic trap; she studied math and science, but she never says she got bad marks. Option B is a partial truth trap; she had too much homework, which is why she missed the workout, but missing the exercise is what actually made her feel like a failure.
17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Diana advises that if you are tired or busy, "it is completely fine to take a short rest... finish the month a little bit late!" This matches option B. Option A is wrong logic; she explicitly says, "You shouldn't stop the challenge completely." Option C is wrong logic; she tells the reader that "nobody has to be perfect."
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. Throughout the whole text, Diana introduces the 30-day challenge, describes her positive start, explains a difficult day, and shares her final advice. She is sharing her experience of doing a fitness challenge (B). Option A is wrong logic; she did hard workouts, but she isn't teaching the reader how to do them. Option C is a partial truth trap; she mentions having a lot of homework on day 15, but complaining about it isn't the main purpose of the blog.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Back in the game
Fourteen-year-old Evan writes about playing his favourite sport again.
Fourteen-year-old Evan loves playing rugby with his team. He is a very active player and enjoys running fast on the sports field. However, last month, things changed for him. He went to the dentist to get metal braces to make his teeth straight. Because rugby is a tough sport where players often fall or hit each other, Evan felt very worried about playing again. He thought he might have to stop playing his favourite game completely.
During his first practice with his new braces, Evan tried to be extremely careful. He didn't run as fast as usual and stayed away from the other boys. He just wanted to pass the ball safely to his team. He was really afraid of breaking his expensive new braces.
But in the middle of the game, something went wrong. Another player threw the ball to Evan, but he wasn't looking. The ball hit him lightly in the face. It wasn't a strong hit, but the sharp metal wire immediately cut the soft inside of his lip. It hurt quite a lot, so he had to stop playing and go home to rest.
The next day, Evan's mother took him back to the dentist to see what they could do. The dentist made him a special, thick plastic cover to wear over his teeth during sports. It felt a bit strange in his mouth at first, but it kept his lips completely safe from the metal. Last weekend, Evan played a big match wearing his new plastic cover. He tackled the other players without feeling afraid at all. He is very pleased that he can enjoy rugby again, and hopes his team will win the school cup next month!
14 How did Evan feel about rugby after he got his braces?
A worried about getting hurt during a game
B angry that his dentist told him to stop playing
C pleased that he could run faster on the sports field
15 What did Evan do during his first practice?
A He tried to avoid getting too close to the other players.
B He asked the other boys to pass the ball safely to him.
C He ran very fast because he was afraid of breaking his braces.
16 What happened in the middle of the game?
A Another player hit Evan hard in the face.
B The metal on Evan's teeth cut his mouth.
C Evan fell over on the ground and hurt his lip.
17 How did the dentist help Evan?
A He took the sharp metal braces off Evan's teeth.
B He told Evan's mother to keep him at home to rest.
C He gave him something to protect his mouth.
18 What is Evan hoping to do in the future?
A buy a new plastic cover for his teeth
B learn how to tackle players without being afraid
C be first in a sports competition with his team
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text states that because rugby is a sport where players fall or hit each other, "Evan felt very worried about playing again." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong reference trap; he thought he might have to stop playing, but the dentist didn't tell him to stop, and he wasn't angry. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he enjoys running fast, but getting braces didn't make him pleased about doing this.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, the text says Evan tried to be careful and "stayed away from the other boys." Option A perfectly matches this meaning. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text says he wanted to pass the ball safely, he didn't ask the other boys to do it. Option C is the opposite of the truth (wrong logic); he didn't run fast because he was afraid of breaking his braces.
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, the text explains that after the ball hit him, "the sharp metal wire immediately cut the soft inside of his lip." Option B accurately describes this event. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the ball hit him lightly, another player didn't hit him hard. Option C is a wrong logic trap; players often fall in rugby, but Evan got hurt because the ball hit his face, not because he fell on the ground.
17 C - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, the text says the dentist "made him a special, thick plastic cover to wear over his teeth" which kept his lips safe. Option C correctly summarizes this action. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the dentist gave him a plastic cover, he didn't take the braces off. Option B is a wrong time/reference trap; Evan went home to rest the day before, but the dentist didn't tell his mother to keep him at home.
18 C - Explanation: This is a specific detail question based on the final paragraph. The text states that Evan "hopes his team will win the school cup next month!" Option C correctly paraphrases this future hope (win the school cup = be first in a sports competition). Option A uses wrong logic; he just received a new plastic cover that works well, he isn't planning to buy one. Option B uses wrong time/logic; he already tackled players without feeling afraid last weekend, he isn't planning to learn this in the future.
