For each question, choose the correct answer.

My weekend job

Sixteen-year-old Jenny writes about testing a new video game.

Sixteen-year-old Jenny loves playing video games. Last month, she found a cool weekend job on the internet. A company wanted teenagers to play their new mobile racing game before they sold it in shops. Jenny had to play the game on her phone, look for problems, and tell the company about them. She was very excited to get money for doing her favourite hobby.

On Saturday morning, Jenny downloaded the game and started playing. At first, everything was amazing. The cars looked fantastic, and the game was very fast. She played for about an hour and won three races. She thought it was the best racing game in the world and didn't find any mistakes at all.

But then, something went wrong. Jenny tried to choose a different car, and suddenly her phone screen went completely black. The game stopped working, and she couldn't use her phone. She turned her phone off and on again, but exactly the same thing happened three times. It was a big problem.

Jenny didn't get angry because she knew this was her job. She sat down at her computer and wrote a long message to the game makers. She carefully explained exactly what she did before the game stopped, so they could understand the problem.

A few days later, the company sent her an email. They were very pleased because her information helped them fix the game quickly. Because she did such a great job, they gave her some extra money. Jenny is really happy and hopes she can test more games for them in the future.

14   What was Jenny's new weekend job?

A teaching teenagers how to play a new game

B finding mistakes in a new mobile game

C selling a new racing game in shops

15   How did Jenny feel about the game at first?

A She liked everything about it.

B She thought it was much too fast.

C She was surprised she won so easily.

16   What was the problem with the game?

A She couldn't find the car she wanted.

B It turned her phone off three times.

C It made her phone stop working.

17   What did Jenny do next?

A She wrote down the details of the problem.

B She tried to fix the game on her computer.

C She told the company that she was angry.

18   What is Jenny hoping to do in the future?

A learn how to make video games

B continue doing this kind of work

C buy a new mobile phone with her money

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In paragraph 1, the text states Jenny had to play the game and "look for problems," which matches "finding mistakes." A is wrong logic; the company wanted teenagers to play, but Jenny isn't teaching them. C is a partial truth; the text mentions selling the game in shops, but that is what the company will do, not Jenny's job.

15 A - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Jenny thought "everything was amazing," the cars "looked fantastic," and it was "the best racing game in the world." B is a partial truth; the game was fast, but she didn't think it was too fast. C is wrong logic; although she won three races, the text never says she was surprised by this.

16 C - Explanation: In paragraph 3, the text says her "phone screen went completely black," "the game stopped working," and she "couldn't use her phone." A is a partial truth; she tried to choose a different car when the problem happened, but the car wasn't missing. B is wrong logic; the game didn't turn her phone off; Jenny turned it off and on herself to try and fix it.

17 A - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Jenny "wrote a long message" and "carefully explained exactly what she did." B is a partial truth; she used her computer to write the message, but she didn't try to fix the game herself. C is wrong logic; the text explicitly states she "didn't get angry."

18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text says Jenny "hopes she can test more games for them in the future," which means she wants to continue doing this work. A is wrong logic; she wants to test games, not make them. C is a partial truth; she got extra money and her phone broke earlier in the story, but there is no mention of her wanting to buy a new phone.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    Making videos for local shops

15-year-old Kevin writes about an interesting way to earn pocket money.

Hi! I'm Kevin, and I'm 15. Like most teenagers, I love getting some extra pocket money. A few months ago, I found a great way to do this. I started making short videos for some of the small shops in my town. The shop owners want to show their business on the internet, but they don't always know how to make good videos. So, I do it for them!

I really enjoy the work. First, the shop owner sends me lots of short videos of their shop, and I put the best parts together on my computer. This part is a lot of fun. But you also have to add music, and that is where you need to be careful. At first, I didn't know much about this. I just used my favourite pop songs in the videos.

However, this was a big mistake. You can't just use any song you like because the musicians own those songs. If you use a famous pop song without asking, the shop can get into trouble. A website might even close the shop's page! One shop owner was quite worried about this. That made me realize I had to change how I did things.

Now, I always use special websites that have free music. Anyone can use these songs without paying, and there are no problems. If you want to make videos for businesses, my top advice is to only use these free music websites. Your videos will still sound amazing, and everyone will be happy and safe online!

14   Why did Kevin start making videos?

A He wanted to earn some extra cash.

B He wanted to help his friends open a new shop.

C He wanted to learn how to use the internet.

15   What does Kevin think about putting the videos together?

A It is very hard to do on a computer.

B He finds it very enjoyable.

C The shop owners do it better than him.

16   What does Kevin say about using famous pop songs?

A The musicians will ask the shop for a lot of money.

B Shop owners usually ask him to use them.

C It can cause problems for the business.

17   What is Kevin's advice for other video makers?

A They should use songs that cost nothing.

B They should write their own music for the videos.

C They should make special websites for shops.

18   What is Kevin trying to do in this blog?

A explain how to become a famous musician

B share his experience of making videos for money

C describe the best shops in his town

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The text says, "I love getting some extra pocket money... I found a great way to do this. I started making short videos..." This means he wanted to earn cash. Option B is a partial truth; he talks about shops, but not about helping friends open new ones. Option C is wrong logic; the shop owners want to use the internet, not Kevin.

15 B - Explanation: The text says, "I put the best parts together on my computer. This part is a lot of fun." 'A lot of fun' means it is enjoyable. Option A uses the word 'computer' from the text, but the text never says it is hard. Option C is wrong because the shop owners don't put the videos together, Kevin does.

16 C - Explanation: The text says, "If you use a famous pop song without asking, the shop can get into trouble." Getting into trouble means it causes problems. Option A is a partial truth; musicians own the songs, but the text doesn't mention them asking for money. Option B is wrong logic; shop owners were worried about it, they didn't ask him to use those songs.

17 A - Explanation: The text says, "my top advice is to only use these free music websites. Anyone can use these songs without paying". This matches using songs that cost nothing. Option B is not mentioned in the text. Option C is a partial truth trap; Kevin uses "special websites" to find music, but he doesn't advise people to make websites for shops.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. Throughout the blog, Kevin explains how he earns extra pocket money by making and editing videos for local businesses. Option A is wrong because he is not teaching people how to be musicians. Option C is a partial truth; he mentions local shops, but the text isn't a description of the best shops in his town.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      Lily's 3D Keychains

Fourteen-year-old Lily writes about her new weekend business.

Fourteen-year-old Lily loves making things. A few months ago, her father bought a new 3D printer for his work. Lily asked him if she could learn how to use it at the weekends. She wanted to make small plastic keychains with people's names on them. She thought it would be a brilliant way to earn a little pocket money by selling them to her classmates at school.

At first, Lily only made a few keychains for her best friends. She decided to use bright blue plastic because it was her favourite colour. When other students saw the keychains on her friends' school bags, they thought they were fantastic. Soon, lots of people from her class asked Lily to make keychains for them, too. She was very busy every weekend making all the different names.

One Saturday, Lily was making a very large name tag for a boy in her maths class. The printer was working perfectly, but suddenly it stopped. Lily looked carefully at the machine and saw a big problem. There wasn't any blue plastic left! The boy's name tag was only half-finished, and Lily didn't know what to do. She couldn't ask the boy to pay for a broken keychain.

Lily quickly searched inside her father's cupboard and found a new box of yellow plastic. She put it into the printer and turned the machine on again. When the keychain was ready, it looked amazing. The top of the name was blue and the bottom was yellow! On Monday, the boy was really pleased with his two-colour name tag. Now, everyone at school wants a two-colour keychain, so Lily is going to buy lots of different colours online next week.

14   Why did Lily want to use her dad's 3D printer?

A to help her father with his office work

B to get some money by selling things at school

C to show her classmates how the machine works

15   What happened after Lily gave keychains to her best friends?

A Other students in her class wanted keychains.

B She started using lots of different colours.

C Her best friends bought her a new school bag.

16   What was the problem on Saturday?

A The 3D printer broke and stopped working forever.

B A boy in her maths class lost his blue keychain.

C There wasn't enough plastic to complete a name tag.

17   How did Lily finish the boy's name tag?

A She asked her father to find some new plastic.

B She used a different colour to complete the work.

C She gave the boy his money back for the name tag.

18   What is Lily planning to do next week?

A make a two-colour name tag for her father

B buy more plastic on the internet

C stop selling keychains to her classmates

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In paragraph 1, the text says Lily thought using the printer "would be a brilliant way to earn a little pocket money by selling them to her classmates at school." Option A uses wrong logic; her father bought it for his work, but Lily didn't use it to help him. Option C is wrong because she made things for her classmates, she didn't show them how the printer worked.

15 A - Explanation: In paragraph 2, the text states that when other students saw the keychains, "lots of people from her class asked Lily to make keychains for them, too." Option B is a wrong time trap; she only used blue plastic at this point in the story. Option C is wrong logic; the keychains were placed on the friends' bags, but the friends did not buy Lily a new bag.

16 C - Explanation: Paragraph 3 explains that the printer stopped because "There wasn't any blue plastic left!" and the name tag was only "half-finished". This means she didn't have enough plastic to complete it. Option A is a partial truth; the printer stopped, but it wasn't broken forever (it just needed more plastic). Option B uses words from the text ("boy", "maths class") but changes the meaning completely; he didn't lose his keychain.

17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Lily found a box of yellow plastic and put it in the printer, so "The top of the name was blue and the bottom was yellow!" This means she used a different colour to finish it. Option A is a wrong person trap; she searched in her father's cupboard, but she didn't ask him to find it. Option C is wrong logic; she says she couldn't ask him to pay for a broken one, but she fixed it rather than giving money back.

18 B - Explanation: The final paragraph says that "Lily is going to buy lots of different colours online next week." Buying online is a simple paraphrase for buying on the internet. Option A is wrong logic; she used her father's plastic, but she isn't making a name tag for him. Option C is the opposite of the truth; she is buying more plastic because everyone wants one, so she will continue selling them.
