Restaurant Work is Hard!

Leo

I play football for my school, so I think I am quite strong. Last month, I got a weekend job as a waiter. I thought it was going to be an easy way to get some extra pocket money. But I was completely wrong! I had to carry big plates of hot food for six hours. There was no time to sit down. At the end of the day, my feet and legs hurt so much. I went straight to sleep when I got home!

Mia

I love talking to people, so I asked for a job at a local café. I thought it would be fun to take customers' orders. I did not know how difficult it is to remember everything! On my first day, the restaurant was very busy. Many people wanted different drinks and cakes at the same time. I quickly forgot who ordered what, and I gave the wrong food to a woman. My manager was nice about it, but I felt very silly.

Sam

My uncle owns a popular pizza restaurant. During the school holidays, I went there to work. I wanted to help the chef make pizzas. But my uncle gave me a very different job. I had to wash all the dirty plates and cups. I stood next to the hot water all day. It was not fun at all, and my clothes got completely wet. People eat so much food! I never knew a restaurant kitchen could be so dirty and busy.

How to give your honest opinion

    The Kind Start

When your friend shows you a new dress or t-shirt, do you feel worried about hurting their feelings? You should always start with a kind word. First, say something good about the clothes. For example, you can say, "That is a beautiful colour on you." After that, you can share your real thoughts safely. You can tell them if the clothes look a bit too big or too small. Finally, smile and tell them they always look great. Your friend will appreciate your honesty!

    The Question Trick

Sometimes your friend tries on new trousers and asks for your opinion. If you do not like their clothes, do not answer immediately. Instead, you should ask your friend a question first. You can ask, "How do you feel in those trousers?" or "Is that your favourite outfit?" If they say they do not like it, you can simply agree with them. This is a very easy way to share your true feelings. You do not have to say anything bad about the clothes!

    The Style Swap

What should you do if your friend buys a terrible new jacket? You do not have to say, "That looks bad!" Instead, you can give them some friendly advice. You can suggest a small change to the outfit. Tell your friend to wear different shoes or try a new hat with the jacket. You can say, "Those jeans are nice, but your black skirt looks better with that jacket." This shows you care about their style, and it keeps your friendship strong.
