Tips for feeling brave on an airplane
Stay Busy
Do you feel afraid when you fly? A good idea is to keep your mind busy. Before you go to the airport, put lots of new games and music on your phone. You can also bring a great book to read. When the plane goes up, put your headphones on and play your favourite game. If you watch a funny film, the time will pass very quickly. You will not think about being in the sky. Soon, you will arrive at your holiday!
Learn About Planes
Many teenagers hate the strange noises that airplanes make. If you do not understand planes, it is easy to feel scared. You can read about how airplanes work on the internet before your trip. Knowing the facts helps a lot. When you get on the plane, you can also say hello to the flight staff. They are very friendly and they fly every day. If you hear a loud sound, just ask them about it. They will tell you everything is fine.
Relax Your Body
It is very important to make your body feel relaxed on a plane. First, you should wear soft, comfortable clothes. Do not wear heavy jackets or tight shoes. When you sit in your seat, close your eyes and take long, slow breaths. This simple exercise tells your brain to stay calm. Some people try to sleep during the journey. You can bring a small pillow from home to help you rest. You will feel much better when you wake up in a new country.

Confused by a foreign language
Marco
Last summer, my family went to London for a holiday. I wanted to practice my English, so I asked the waiter for our food. I wanted to eat chicken with chips. But I spoke too fast and made a funny mistake. I asked the waiter for a "kitchen" with chips! The waiter looked very surprised, and my parents started laughing. I felt a bit silly, but the waiter was very nice. He brought me the right food in the end.
Sofia
I went on a school trip to Paris last year. On the first day, I wanted to say "good morning" to my new French teacher. But I used the wrong words and said "good night" instead! It was nine o'clock in the morning, so she looked very confused. Then she smiled and explained my mistake. My classmates laughed a lot. Now, I always check my dictionary before I speak. But I will never forget how to say hello in French!
Leo
My aunt lives in Spain, and I visited her in August. One day, she asked me to buy some soap from the supermarket. I practiced the Spanish word in my head many times. But when I talked to the shop assistant, I asked for "soup" instead. The assistant took me to the food area, and I didn't understand why! When I saw the food, I knew I was wrong. We both laughed. How to make your host family happy!
Helping in the house
It is always a good idea to help your host family with the housework. You do not have to clean the whole house, but you should keep your bedroom tidy. After you eat dinner with the family, offer to wash the plates and cups. This will make them very happy! Also, remember that it is their home. You must always ask them first before you turn on the television or use their computer. Do not just take things without speaking to them.
Being friendly
Your host family wants to learn about you. You should bring a small gift from your town to give them on your first day. When you are at home, try not to spend all evening alone in your bedroom. Sit in the living room and play games with them or watch a film. They will love it if you tell them interesting stories about your country. You can also talk about your favourite food and the things you like doing with your friends.
Daily routine
Every family has a different daily routine. You need to learn their rules quickly. In the mornings, everyone has to get ready for work and school. Because of this, you should not spend a long time in the shower. If you go out with your friends in the afternoon, always tell your host family when you will come back. If your bus is late and you cannot get home on time, you must send them a text message. They will worry about you!
