Ideas for your long train journey
Travel Apps
Do you feel bored when you sit on a train for a long time? You can use your phone to find many fun things to do. You can download new music before you leave home. It is also a great time to look for fun games to play. If you find a game that needs two players, you can ask someone sitting near you to join in. It is a good way to make a new friend while you travel.
Window Views
Sometimes, the best way to stop feeling bored is to look out of the window. You can watch the towns and farms go past as you move. It is helpful to bring a map with you. When you see a new place, look at the map to learn its name. You can also take photos of the beautiful things you see. Save these pictures on your phone so you can look at them again when you get home.
Mini Books
If you do not want to use your phone, you should carry a mini book. These books are small and easy to keep in your bag. They often tell short stories or show facts about the places you are going to visit. You can read about the history of the city you will see soon. It is a brilliant way to learn new things. Making International Friends
Leo
Last summer, I went to a tennis camp and met a boy called Mateo. He is from Spain. At first, it was very hard to talk to him. He spoke English very fast! But we played tennis together every day, and soon we became great friends. We still send messages every weekend. He tells me about his life in Madrid. I really want to fly to Spain to visit him next year. It is brilliant to have a friend in another country.
Mia
I have a friend from Japan called Yui. We started writing emails to each other two years ago. We talked about our favourite bands and hobbies. Last month, her family came to my city for a holiday. I was so happy to finally meet her! We walked around the city centre and took lots of photos. She also gave me a beautiful pink T-shirt from Tokyo. I wear it all the time. I love having an international friend.
Sam
In September, two brothers from Brazil joined my class at school. They sat next to me, so I started talking to them. They are really friendly and funny. Sometimes, they do not understand the teacher, so I help them with their homework. Last weekend, I went to their house. They showed me how to bake sweet Brazilian cheese bread. It was delicious! Now, we eat lunch together every day. Making friends from different places is really interesting.

Respecting different cultures while travelling
Eating with locals
When you visit a new country, you will see many new kinds of food. Some dishes might look strange to you. You should never say that the food looks bad! It is important to try a small piece first. Smile and tell the cook that it is interesting. You can ask them how they make the meal. Eating together is a great way to show respect. If you do not like the taste, just finish your small piece and say thank you.
Talking and listening
People in different countries often have different ideas about the world. When you travel, you must listen carefully to people. Do not get angry if their opinions are different from yours. You should not tell someone that they are wrong. Instead, ask them questions about their daily life and their city. This shows that you want to learn. Everyone loves talking about their home! If you listen well, you will understand their culture better and maybe make some great new friends.
Watching local habits
Every country has special rules for how to act. Before you go out, you need to watch what local people do. For example, in some places, you must wear long clothes when you visit a quiet building. Also, many tourists love taking photos. But you must always ask people before you take a picture of them. Some people do not like it! If you follow the local rules, people will be very friendly and happy to help you on your trip.
