How to organize a neighbourhood outdoor cinema

The Equipment

To show a movie outside, you need a good projector. You can ask your school if you can borrow one for the weekend. Next, you must make a large screen. You can use a big white sheet from a bed. Hang it on a wall or between two trees. Make sure it is completely flat. Sound is also important, so connect some strong speakers to your computer. Finally, always check the weather online before you start setting up your cinema!

The Movie and Guests

It is important to choose the right film for your cinema night. Pick a funny comedy or an exciting adventure that everybody likes. Do not choose scary movies because some young children might be there. You should make colourful paper invitations to give to your neighbours. Put the time and date on them. Remember, an outdoor cinema can be loud. You must ask the people living near you if the noise is okay, and stop the movie before it gets too late.

Food and Seats

Your outdoor cinema night will be much better with some snacks. Popcorn and cold drinks are cheap and easy to make for a lot of people. You do not need to buy expensive chairs for your guests. Just ask everyone to bring a warm blanket or some soft pillows from home to sit on the grass. When the film finishes, you must turn on the lights. Then, give everybody a bag so they can help you pick up all the rubbish.

Playing music at a local charity event

    Carlos

I played my guitar at the charity event on Saturday. I wanted to help the town's animal home. Before the event, my hands were shaking because I was very nervous. But then my classmates arrived to watch me, and I felt much better. I played some popular pop songs, and people sang with me! I didn't play with anyone else this time. But next month, I want to start a new music club at school.

    Nina

My town has a big charity event every summer. This year, I decided to play my electronic piano to get money for the children's hospital. The piano is really heavy, so my dad drove me there and carried it for me. I played quiet classical music. It was a beautiful day, but I played inside the town hall. I loved the experience so much. I will definitely play my piano there again next summer!

    Jamal

I play the drums in a rock band with three friends. We wanted to help our school buy new computers, so we played at the charity event. We practised every afternoon for a month before the big day! We played our music in the park. It was very loud, but people loved it. My mum wanted to come and watch, but she had to work. We were tired after playing, but we had great fun.

Instead, we always meet on the beach after school on Wednesdays. You can feel the wind and listen to the waves while we talk about our books! You must bring some money to buy your own books. Sometimes, we also pick up rubbish from the sand.

If you love trees and birds, you should join our club! We read wonderful books about forests and how to save them. We always give you the books to read, so you do not need to buy them. Our club meets every Saturday morning in the big school library. After we finish a book, we go to the school garden. Our teacher shows us how to put small plants in the ground. It is great fun to watch them get bigger!

      City Eco-Readers
