Taking beautiful photos of flowers in the community garden

Emma

I love visiting the community garden very early in the morning. The light is beautiful then, and the flowers look amazing. I do not use a modern digital camera. I take photos with my dad’s old camera. It is quite heavy, but it takes fantastic pictures. I show all my photos to my grandmother because she cannot walk to the garden. Yesterday, I sent my favourite flower picture to a local magazine. I hope it wins the first prize!

Lucas

I usually go to the community garden after school. I just use my new mobile phone to take photos. It is very easy to carry in my pocket. I do not take photos of the whole garden. I prefer to get very close to the flowers and catch the little bugs on them. Sometimes the photos are not clear, so I watch short videos online. They teach me how to improve my pictures. I put the best ones on my blog.

Sofia

Every Saturday, my mum and I walk to the community garden together. We spend hours looking at the beautiful plants. My favourite flowers are the big purple ones. Sometimes we see insects on them, but I only want to film the flowers! I like to print my best photos at home. Then, I use them to make pretty birthday cards. I give them to my classmates at school. They always feel very happy when they receive one of my cards.

Recycling Center: Old CDs and DVDs

    Plastic Cases Bin

When you bring old CDs and DVDs here, please take them out of their plastic cases first. You can put the empty plastic cases in this bin. We will melt the plastic to make new things. Remember to take out any paper pictures from the boxes. You must put all paper in the green bin next to the door. Do not put the CDs or DVDs in this bin. We only want the empty plastic boxes here.

    Charity Donation Box

Do you have old movies or music that you do not want anymore? If your CDs and DVDs still work well, you can put them in this box. We will give them to a local shop, and they will sell them to help poor families. Please do not give us discs with big marks on them. Make sure you leave the discs inside their covers so people know what they are buying. Thank you for helping others!

    Broken Discs Bin

This bin is only for broken CDs and DVDs. If your discs do not play music or movies anymore, please put them here. We use special machines to cut these old discs into very small pieces. We then use the pieces to make parts for cars! Please be careful with broken plastic because it can cut your hands. Ask a worker for help if you have a lot of heavy discs to carry.

A comic book about an ocean superhero

      Leo

I read this great comic book yesterday. My friend lent it to me. The story is about a young boy who can breathe under the water and collects rubbish. The best thing about the comic is the art. The artist uses bright blues and greens for the ocean. I loved looking at them. The hero fights some scary people who throw plastic into the sea. I thought it was brilliant, but the finish was a bit boring. I wanted more action!

      Mia

I always save my pocket money for new comics. Last weekend, I finally got the new Ocean Hero book. I didn't read it fast because I wanted to look at every page carefully. The story is amazing. The hero talks to dolphins and helps sick turtles. I didn't know much about sea animals before, but now I know lots of facts! I really loved this book. I plan to look online tomorrow for more books by this writer.

      Sam

My dad bought me this comic because I love the ocean. The superhero wears a cool suit for swimming under the water. He has special machines to clean the dirty sea. The story was so exciting that I read the whole book in just two hours! The only problem is the bad guys. They are just silly men who do not look dangerous at all. I hope the hero gets a better enemy in the next book.

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Text C says Sam read the whole book in "just two hours". Text B has a negative trap stating Mia "didn't read it fast".

8 A - Reason: Text A says the best thing is the "art" and Leo "loved looking at them" (the bright blues and greens).

9 B - Reason: Text B says Mia saves her "pocket money" for new comics and got the book. Text A says Leo's friend lent it to him, and Text C says Sam's dad bought it.

10 B - Reason: Text B says Mia didn't know much about sea animals before, but now she knows "lots of facts".

11 A - Reason: Text A says Leo thought the "finish was a bit boring".

12 C - Reason: Text C says Sam thinks the bad guys are "silly men who do not look dangerous at all". Text A has a trap saying Leo thinks the people are "scary".

13 B - Reason: Text B says Mia plans to look online for "more books by this writer".
