Save the Ocean: Join Our Student Teams!

Oliver's Beach Team

Do you love spending time next to the sea? Oliver is the leader of our beach clean-up group. He needs energetic students to pick up plastic from the sand. We meet at the beach at seven o'clock every Saturday, so you must be a morning person! You will walk a lot, so please put on comfortable shoes. You can take photos of the clean beach when we finish. Oliver's team is perfect if you want to be outside and keep sea animals safe.

Sofia's Art Team

Do you enjoy painting and drawing? Sofia leads our ocean poster group. We do not go to the beach. Instead, we stay inside the school art room. We paint big pictures of fish and turtles to put on the school walls. You do not have to be a fantastic artist to join us. We just want students who love trying new things. We meet after school on Wednesdays. If you want to use colours to show people why the ocean is important, choose Sofia’s team!

Lucas's Information Team

Are you brave enough to speak to a big group? Lucas is the leader of our ocean information team. He is looking for confident students to visit different classes in our school. You will stand at the front of the room and share interesting things about the ocean. You have to read books and watch videos to learn about the sea first. Lucas will help you write a great speech. If you want to teach others how to keep the water clean, this team is for you!

    Helping Sick Birds

    Tom

I am a very calm and quiet person. This is important when you help injured birds because they are usually very frightened. If you move fast, they get scared. I always walk slowly and speak softly. My parents gave me a small room at the back of our house. It is perfect for the birds because there is no loud TV or music in there. I sit with them for hours while they eat. You really need to be gentle to do this job.

    Sara

My family says I am a very patient person. When you look after sick birds, you must wait a long time. Sometimes it takes many weeks for their broken wings to heal. I never feel angry about this. I also have to wake up very early every day to feed them, but I enjoy the mornings! Birds can make a big mess, too. I wash their dirty cages every afternoon, and I do not mind the hard work. It is always a wonderful feeling when they fly away.

    Leo

I help birds because I am brave. Many people are afraid of big birds, but I am not frightened at all. When an owl or a large sea bird is hurt, it can use its sharp beak to bite you. I have strong hands, but I hold the birds very carefully. I have to catch them so the animal doctor can look at them. I also give them their medicine twice a day. It is a difficult job, but I love making them feel better.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 A - Reason: Text A says Tom is a "quiet person" and that he will "always walk slowly and speak softly".

8 B - Reason: Text B says Sara has to "wake up very early every day... but I enjoy the mornings!".

9 C - Reason: Text C says Leo is not frightened of "big birds" like an "owl or a large sea bird".

10 A - Reason: Text A says Tom's parents gave him "a small room at the back of our house" for the birds. Text B is a trap because Sara washes cages, but it does not mention a special room.

11 B - Reason: Text B says Sara will "wash their dirty cages" and she does "not mind the hard work".

12 C - Reason: Text C says Leo will "give them their medicine twice a day". Text A is a trap because Tom talks about watching the birds "eat", not giving medicine.

13 B - Reason: Text B says "you must wait a long time" and "it takes many weeks for their broken wings to heal". Text A is a trap because Tom says he sits with them "for hours", which is about feeding them, not getting better.

      Early Birds

Do you love waking up early? We need energetic people for the Early Bird team! You have to arrive at the park at 6:00 a.m. Your job is to get everything ready before the long walk begins. You will stand at the start line and shout happy words to make everyone smile. You do not have to walk with the group. Please eat a good breakfast before you come, because we cannot give you any food.

      Trail Guides

If you love walking, this is the perfect team for you! You will walk the whole ten kilometres with the other people. Your job is to show everyone the right way to go. You must also carry a heavy bag with water and fruit. If someone feels tired or thirsty, you can give them a snack. You will walk to the finish line with the group, but you do not give out the prizes there.

      Finish Line Heroes

You do not need to wake up early for this team! The walkers will arrive in the afternoon, and they need a big party. We want cheerful people who can play loud music and dance.
