Our International Pen Pals

Emma

My pen pal is Lucas, and he lives in Spain. He is very tall and has dark, curly hair. My brother has straight hair, but I think Lucas’s hair looks cooler. Lucas is a very funny person. When we talk on video calls, he always tells me jokes and makes me laugh. He is a good friend, but he can be a bit lazy sometimes. He often plays video games instead of doing his homework. I always have to tell him to study!

Tom

I have a pen pal from Japan called Hiro. He is quite short, but he is great at basketball! Hiro wears black glasses and he has short, straight hair. He is a very smart boy. He always gets the best marks in his class for maths and science. Hiro is quite a shy person, so he doesn't talk much when we are in large groups online. But when it is just the two of us, he is very friendly and kind.

Lily

My Brazilian pen pal, Maria, is amazing. She has very long, blonde hair and big brown eyes. My sister is quite shy, but Maria is completely different. She is never quiet! She loves talking about her day and telling me long stories. She is also very confident and is never afraid to meet new people. We have so much fun when we chat. She is always smiling and has lots of energy, so it is impossible to feel sad when I speak to her.

    Choose Your Teen Guide!

    Lucas

Do you like to laugh? Lucas is the perfect guide for you. He talks very fast and tells funny jokes about the city. His tours are never boring, but you need to wear good shoes. He walks quickly, so it is a bad idea to bring heavy bags. Lucas does not know all the history, but he knows the best places to eat pizza! Choose Lucas if you want a fun and active afternoon in the town centre.

    Sofia

If you want a relaxing tour, you should go with Sofia. She speaks slowly and quietly. She loves reading, so she knows many old stories about our town's famous buildings. Sofia never rushes, and she is always happy to answer your questions. She does not take visitors to busy shopping streets. She prefers to show you beautiful quiet parks and old bridges. You will need a lot of time for this peaceful walk.

    Ben

Ben is a very clever guide. He can speak three different languages, so he is great for visitors from other countries. When Ben talks about the city, he uses his tablet. He shows you interesting pictures of what the streets looked like a hundred years ago. Ben gives a lot of information, so you should bring a notebook. He is quite shy and does not tell jokes, but his tours are amazing if you want to learn.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Text C says Ben "shows you interesting pictures" on his tablet. Text B is a trap because Sofia loves "reading", but does not show pictures.

9 C - Reason: Text C says that "you should bring a notebook" because Ben gives a lot of information. Text A is a trap because it tells you it is a bad idea to "bring heavy bags".

10 A - Reason: Text A says that Lucas "knows the best places to eat pizza". Text B is a trap because it mentions avoiding "shopping streets" where food might be sold.

11 B - Reason: Text B says Sofia is "always happy to answer your questions".

12 B - Reason: Text B says Sofia "does not take visitors to busy shopping streets" and prefers "quiet parks". Text A is a trap because Lucas goes to the busy "town centre".

13 A - Reason: Text A says Lucas "tells funny jokes". Text C is a trap because it says Ben "does not tell jokes".

      Travelling Changes How We Think

      Tom

When I went to Japan last year, everything was very different. At first, I did not like the meals because they were unusual. But after a few days, I really loved them! I also worried about making friends because I do not speak Japanese. However, I learned that you can speak to people with a smile and by using your hands. I was surprised that strangers were so helpful. Now I know that people everywhere are actually very friendly.

      Sara

My family travelled to Costa Rica this summer. We went to beautiful forests and saw many amazing birds. I learned some new Spanish words, but the people there also taught me about nature. They always try to keep their country clean. Before this trip, I never thought much about the earth. Now, I want to do more to help the natural world. I am planning to start a new club to protect local animals at my school next month. It is important to care for our planet.

      Mike

I visited a small village in India with my school. The families there did not have big houses or expensive cars. The kids did not have video games or lots of toys, but they played outside and laughed all day. I learned that you do not need lots of things to feel great. At home, I always asked my parents for new clothes and games. After this trip, I decided to buy fewer things. I want to spend more time outside with my friends instead.

12 B - Reason: Sara says she is planning to "start a new club to protect local animals at my school".

13 A - Reason: Tom clearly states, "I was surprised that strangers were so helpful".
