Forgetting a friend's birthday
Leo
Last month, I had a big maths test. I studied all week and totally forgot my best friend’s birthday! In the morning, I saw another boy give him a present. I felt very bad. We had an art lesson before lunch. I used some nice paper and pens to make a funny card for him. I gave it to him in the playground. He laughed and said it was the best card ever. Now, I always check my phone for birthdays.
Mia
I always remember birthdays, but last year I got the day wrong. I thought my friend Chloe’s birthday was on Friday, but it was Thursday. She looked sad in our morning classes. When I asked her why, she told me. I was so sorry! At lunch time, I had a big piece of chocolate cake in my bag. I gave it to her and sang happy birthday. She smiled and we ate it together. Now I write all important dates on my bedroom wall.
Sam
Normally, my mobile phone tells me when it is a friend's birthday. But my phone broke last week, so I forgot my friend Dan’s special day. I did not say happy birthday to him at school. When my mum told me after school, I felt terrible. I walked to the supermarket quickly and bought his favourite sweets. I saw him at the park later and gave them to him. He was really happy. Next time, I must remember without my phone!

Advice on Saying Sorry
Speak Quickly
If you make a mistake, do not wait. It is best to say sorry on the same day. If you wait a long time, your friend or teacher might get more angry. Sometimes it is hard to find the right words. You can stand in front of a mirror and practice what you want to say first. When you speak to the person, look at them. If they are still sad, give them some time. They will feel better soon.
Write a Note
Sometimes you feel too shy to speak to your teacher or friend. Writing a short letter or an email is a great idea. In your message, you must explain what happened clearly. Do not say another person did it. It is important to tell the truth. If you do not know what to write, you can ask your parents or an older brother or sister to help you. A good note shows that you really care about their feelings.
Make Things Right
Saying sorry is good, but doing something kind is better. If you break your friend's pen, you should buy them a new one. If you forget your homework, ask the teacher if you can do extra work to fix the problem. You can also give your friend a small present, like their favourite sweet. When you want to talk to your teacher, make sure they are not in the middle of a lesson. Always check that they have free time first.

Cheering up a friend
Elena
When my friend gets a bad mark, I always take her outside. We cannot change the test now, so we just try to forget it. We often ride our bikes to the park near my house. Riding fast in the fresh air makes her feel much better. After that, we usually buy some big ice creams. My friend loves chocolate, and eating it always puts a smile on her face. Sometimes we talk about school, but only about the fun subjects!
Lucas
I like to help my friends do better next time. If a friend gets a bad mark, I invite him to my house. We look at his test paper together and find the mistakes. Then, I help him study so he feels ready for the next exam. But we don't only work! After we finish, we play computer games in my bedroom. When he tries to win the game, he stops thinking about his bad mark and starts laughing.
Sofia
I think it is very important to talk when you feel upset. When my friend is sad about a bad mark, I just sit and listen to her. She usually feels much better after she tells me everything. Then, we sit on my sofa and watch a funny film on television to help her laugh. We also play her favourite pop songs loudly in my room and sing together. Singing and watching movies are great ways to feel happy again.
