Screen time apps for family dinners
DinnerLock
Do you use your phone too much during meals? This app can help you. You choose your dinner time, and the app closes all your phone programs at that time. Your phone screen becomes black. It also sends a quick text to your parents’ phones when you sit down to eat. You can only use your phone again when dinner finishes. This app does not have music or games, but it is great for a quiet family dinner.
MealTime Fun
This app makes dinner time exciting for everyone. Before you eat, the app gives you many easy ideas for hot meals. You can choose a recipe and cook with your parents. During dinner, the app shows fun word games and quizzes on a tablet or one screen. Everyone can play together. Finally, you must take a picture of your clean plates to complete the daily challenge. You cannot use your phone for messages until you do this.
ScreenStop
Do you want to leave your phone in another room during dinner? Use this app to help your family change their habits. When you start dinner, the app plays soft, sweet music to make your dining room feel nice. It also records how many minutes you stay away from your screen. Stay away for a week, and you can get free cinema tickets or shop gifts. The app does not turn off your phone automatically, so you must try hard!

Sharing a computer
Leo
I share a laptop with my older brother, Tom. Because he is in his last year of school, he has a lot of homework to do on it. I only use the laptop to play games with my friends. Our parents made a rule that I can only use it for one hour a day after dinner. I think this is fair because Tom needs it more than I do. I always make sure I log off when my time is finished.
Mia
My younger sister and I use the same computer. We keep it in the living room, and our main rule is that we must never eat or drink when we are sitting at the desk. Our parents bought it for studying, so I don't use it for playing games at all. I usually search the internet for my school projects or write emails to my friends. My sister sometimes tries to download games, but my dad always stops her!
Sam
I have a twin brother, and we share a large computer in our bedroom. When we were younger, our mum gave us a time limit, but we don't have that rule anymore. Now, the most important rule is that we must always ask before we download any new programs. This is because the computer gets slow if there are too many things on it. I love watching funny videos on the internet, and my brother mostly uses it to listen to music.
Answer Key & Explanations
7 B - Reason: Mia says her main rule is that they "must never eat or drink" when sitting at the desk.
8 C - Reason: Sam says that he and his brother "must always ask before we download any new programs."
9 A - Reason: Leo has a rule that he can only use the laptop for "one hour a day". (Sam used to have a time limit, but not anymore).
10 B - Reason: Mia says she doesn't "use it for playing games at all." (Leo only uses it to play games).
11 B - Reason: Mia shares the computer with her "younger sister". (Leo shares with his older brother, and Sam shares with his twin).
12 C - Reason: Sam says he loves "watching funny videos" on the internet.
13 A - Reason: Leo's older brother has "a lot of homework to do on it". (Mia does school projects, but the question asks about the sibling's schoolwork).

How to text an upset friend
Take a break
When you are upset with a friend, the worst thing you can do is message them immediately. You should leave your mobile in another room and do something else for a while. Go for a walk or play a game. When you feel calm, you can think about what to say. Also, you shouldn't send mad faces or other small pictures. They often make the problem worse. You might want to speak to your friend right away, but it is always better to wait.
Choose words carefully
Before you share a text with a sad friend, take a short time to look at it. You must always check your writing carefully. Make sure your sentences are kind. In the past, you probably loved sending funny drawings to them, but right now, you need to use clear words. Never write using only big capitals. Your friend will think you are shouting! Finally, remember to ask if they are okay. A simple question shows that you care and want to help.
Make a call
Texting is fast, but it is not always the best idea when someone is angry. It is much easier to talk using your voice instead of typing on a screen. When they hear you, your friend knows that you are being nice. You do not need to worry about big letters when you speak! If they live near you, you should try to see each other. Go to the park or get some ice cream. Being in the same place usually fixes the problem quickly.
Answer Key & Explanations
7 A - Reason: Text A suggests that you should "leave your mobile in another room".
8 B - Reason: Text B advises you to "look at it" and "check your writing carefully" before sharing a text.

12 C - Reason: Text C suggests you should "try to see each other" and "Go to the park or get some ice cream."
13 B - Reason: Text B reminds you to "ask if they are okay" to show that you care.
