School Ski Trip
Tom
I am very excited about our school ski trip to Italy. It is my first time travelling outside my own country! I am going to the shops this weekend with my dad. My old winter coat is too small now, so I need to buy a bigger one. I also need thick socks. I am a little nervous because I do not know any Italian words. I hope I can understand the ski teachers there.
Sara
We are going to France for our ski trip. I went there with my parents last summer, but I have never seen the snow! Skiing is expensive, so I am not buying new things. I am wearing my cousin's ski trousers and warm jacket. They fit me perfectly. At the moment, I am using a great app on my phone every evening. It teaches me French vocabulary so I can talk to the people in the shops.
Mike
Our ski trip to Switzerland is next month. I speak German very well, so I do not need to learn the language. I am doing exercises in my bedroom every morning to make my legs stronger for skiing. I am only worried about one thing. I really hate the winter wind and ice! I usually stay inside when it is freezing. I bought some nice chocolates yesterday to give to my ski teacher on the first day.

Hosting a Foreign Exchange Student
The First Morning
When your exchange student arrives, they will feel very tired after their long journey. First, you must take them to the school office to get their timetable. Then, walk around the school together so they know where their classrooms are. Do not worry if they do not meet all your friends today. It is better to wait. During the first few lessons, you should help them understand what the teacher wants. Remember to speak slowly and clearly.
Lunch and Breaks
Lunchtime is a great time for your new guest to relax. You should sit together in the school café. This is the perfect moment to invite two or three close friends to sit with you. Do not ask too many people, because your guest might feel shy. You can help them buy their food. Ask them what they usually eat at home, and tell them about the food here. If they do not like the school lunch, do not get angry!
After School
When classes finish at three o'clock, do not go straight home. Your school has many after-school clubs, and this is a fantastic way for your student to try something different. If you play basketball or do art, ask them to come with you. They do not need to bring any sports clothes or equipment on the first day. They can just watch! Before you walk home, check that they have all their bags and coats. Then, you can plan a fun evening!

Speaking Spanish on Holiday
Tom
I went to Spain with my family last summer. My parents and my sister do not know any Spanish words. So, I was the only person who could speak to people! When we went to the market, I ordered all our meals. I also asked the man in the shop about the prices of some fruit. My older brother usually talks to the hotel staff, but he was not on the trip. My Spanish teacher was very happy when I told her!
Sarah
Learning Spanish at school is great for holidays. Last year in Mexico, my family could not find our hotel. We were quite worried. I saw a woman in the street and asked her for directions in Spanish. She was very kind and gave us a free city map. We didn't buy anything! Later that week, I went to the park and played football with some local teenagers. We talked in Spanish the whole time. It was a really fun afternoon.
Mike
My mum and dad speak Spanish very well, so they usually talk to the waiters in restaurants on holiday. But last month in Argentina, I met a boy on the beach. We played volleyball and talked in Spanish. Now, we write emails to each other every week. To get better at the language, I sit in my bedroom and watch Spanish cartoons on my laptop before our trips. It is much more fun than reading a dictionary!
