Clothes swap guidelines

Before the event

You need to plan your clothes swap carefully. First, choose a weekend afternoon for the event. Then, make colourful posters and put them up in your street. Tell your friends to bring clean clothes they do not wear anymore. Remind everyone not to bring old shoes! Ask people to give you their clothes a few days early. This gives you time to check that everything looks nice. You can also ask parents to help you carry the heavy bags.

Getting the room ready

To make your clothes swap fun, the room needs to look great. You can use your garage or living room. Put tables in the centre and fold the clothes neatly on top. It is a good idea to hang dresses and jackets up so people can see them easily. Make it feel like a real shop! You should also put a big mirror in the corner. Then, play some pop music and put bowls of snacks on a table for your guests.

Swapping and finishing

When your friends arrive, give them a ticket for every piece of clothing they bring. They can use these tickets to get new clothes. Everyone should try things on before they take them home. If two people want the same sweater, you must help them choose fairly! At the end of the day, there will be some clothes left. You should not throw them in the bin. Put them in boxes and give them to a local charity shop instead.

Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: "Swapping and finishing" explains that you should "give them to a local charity shop" if there are clothes left at the end of the day.

8 B - Reason: "Getting the room ready" tells you to "put bowls of snacks on a table for your guests".

9 A - Reason: "Before the event" says getting clothes early gives you "time to check that everything looks nice". Text C has a trap about checking things "before they take them home".

10 B - Reason: "Getting the room ready" says "You should also put a big mirror in the corner." Text A has a trap using the word "looks" but it is about the clothes, not the people.

11 C - Reason: "Swapping and finishing" says "give them a ticket" and "They can use these tickets to get new clothes". Text B has a trap saying it feels "like a real shop", but you do not pay with money.

12 A - Reason: "Before the event" says "You can also ask parents to help you carry the heavy bags."

13 C - Reason: "Swapping and finishing" says "If two people want the same sweater, you must help them choose fairly!"

    Fast Fashion and Our Planet

    Leo

I love fashion, but cheap clothes are a big problem for the world. Factories use a lot of water to make just one T-shirt. Also, they often put dirty water into rivers. Because of this, I stopped buying new clothes last year. Now, I only go to shops that sell old clothes. You can find some really cool things there, and it is much better for the planet. Next month, I am going to have a clothes swap party with my friends.

    Mia

My friends buy new clothes every weekend because they are so cheap. But they throw them in the bin after wearing them only once! This makes a lot of rubbish, and it is terrible for the environment. I want to help the planet, so I keep my clothes for a long time. When my favourite jeans get a hole in them, I do not throw them away. I ask my grandmother to help me fix them. It is fun to learn how to sew!

    Sam

Many clothes in our shops come from countries that are very far away. Companies use big ships and planes to bring them here. This puts a lot of bad gas into the air and changes the weather. I think we need to change how we shop. I try to buy my clothes from people who make them in my town. Sometimes, I even try to make my own T-shirts. My mum gave me a sewing machine for my birthday, and I love it!

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 B - Reason: Text B says that Mia's friends "throw them in the bin after wearing them only once!"

8 C - Reason: Text C says that Sam tries to buy his clothes from people who "make them in my town" (near him).

9 A - Reason: Text A explains that factories use a lot of water and "put dirty water into rivers."

10 B - Reason: Text B says that Mia asks her "grandmother to help me fix them" when her jeans get a hole.

11 A - Reason: Text A says that Leo is going to "have a clothes swap party with my friends" next month.

12 C - Reason: Text C says that companies "use big ships and planes to bring them here" from far away.

13 C - Reason: Text C says that Sam tries to "make my own T-shirts" using the sewing machine from his mum.

      Store Bag Notices

      Green Threads

Welcome to Green Threads! We want to help the planet. We ask you to bring your own bag when you buy clothes here. If you need a plastic bag, you must pay 10 pence. We give this money to local animal groups. But there is good news! If you put your new jeans or T-shirts in your own bag, we give you a small discount. Please show your bag to the assistant before you pay.

      Fashion Forward

At Fashion Forward, we care about the environment. Many shoppers ask for paper bags, but paper bags often break when it rains. Because of this, we sell strong cloth bags. You can find them on the front desk. They are big enough for heavy winter coats and boots. You can wash our bags easily at home and use them again. Please remember to put one in your pocket before you visit our store next time!

      The Blue Boutique

Thank you for shopping at The Blue Boutique. Please listen to our important news. From next month, we will not have any plastic bags in our store. You must bring a bag from home for your new clothes. We want to thank shoppers who do this. Every time you bring your own bag, you can choose a free sticker. We have lots of beautiful colors.
