The Story of a Cotton T-Shirt

Liam

For our school project, I looked at how cotton grows. I watched a long video on the internet about it. I was very surprised! Farmers use a lot of water to grow the cotton for just one T-shirt. I asked my friends if they knew this, and they said no. Next week, I am going to show my project to all the students in our school. I hope they will understand that we must be careful with our clothes.

Sara

My project is about the factories that make our T-shirts. I learned that many people work hard to make the clothes. I tried to make a small shirt for my sister's doll at home. It was not easy at all! I have a lot of clothes in my bedroom. But after this project, I want to keep my old T-shirts for a longer time. I will not buy new ones every month. This is good for the planet.

Noah

I decided to find out how T-shirts get to the shops. My uncle drives a big truck, so I asked him some questions for my project. He told me that clothes often come from different countries. I read a book about it too. A T-shirt travels a very long way on ships and planes before we can buy it. I was amazed! I want to buy a new T-shirt soon, but I will look for one from my own country.

    Taking Care of Your Clothes

    Washing Your Clothes

Do you want your favourite T-shirts to look new for a long time? Always read the small labels inside before you wash them. These labels tell you the right water temperature to use. You must wash dark clothes and light clothes at different times. If you put a red shirt with white socks, your socks might become pink! Finally, remember to turn your jeans inside out. This stops the colours from changing in the wash.

    Drying and Ironing

Hot machines are great for drying clothes fast, but they can be bad for your clothes. It is much better to hang your wet sweaters on a line outside. The sun and air will dry them safely. When your clothes are dry, you might need to iron them so they look neat. Always ask an adult to help you because irons get very hot. You should never iron over plastic pictures on your shirts, or they will melt and break.

    Storing Your Clothes

Putting your clothes away carefully helps them last longer. You should fold heavy jumpers and put them on a shelf. If you hang them up, they will stretch and become too big. However, you must use hangers for your jackets and nice shirts. If you find a small hole in your trousers, do not throw them in the bin! You can easily sew the hole with a needle and thread. Ask a family member to show you how.

      Helping at the charity shop

      Liam

I work in the back room of the charity shop every Saturday. My job is to open the bags of clothes that people bring us. I love looking at the strange and unusual hats and jackets. Sometimes I find things from fifty years ago! I don't work with the customers much. Instead, I spend a lot of time chatting with the other volunteers. Many of them are grandmothers, and they tell me great stories. I always have a lot of fun with them.

      Emma

I volunteer on Sunday mornings. I really enjoy helping the customers when they walk in. If they need a warm coat or a special dress, I find it for them. My favourite job is choosing the best clothes and putting them in the big shop window. I want to be a clothes designer when I am older. Working here is great practice for that. I never fix the clothes, but I make sure everything looks beautiful in the shop before we open.

      Noah

I started volunteering last month because I want to help our town. I am good at fixing things. If a shirt has a hole or needs a new button, I do that before we sell it. I also stand at the desk and take the money when people buy things. I always tell my school friends about the shop. I ask them to bring their old clothes to us. It is much better than throwing them in the bin!
