Walking to School

Leo

I walk through a big park to get to school every day. The grass is often wet in the morning, so I cannot wear normal trainers. I have to wear strong black boots. They are great because my feet stay warm and dry all day. My friends think they are ugly, but I do not care! When I get home, I always wash the dirt off them. It only takes a minute, and then they are ready for the next day.

Zara

My walk to school is on busy city streets. I always leave the house late, so I have to walk very fast. I wear light sports shoes. I saw a picture of them on a website and bought them. I think they are beautiful because they have yellow and pink lines on them. I do not wear them when it rains because the water comes inside. But on dry days, they are the best shoes for my journey!

Max

I do not live very far from my school. But I always have a lot of heavy books in my bag. I need shoes that make my feet feel comfortable. I wanted some cool blue trainers, but my mum chose these grey walking shoes for me. She says they are better for my back. She was right! They are very soft inside. I never have to run to school, so I do not need fast sports shoes like my classmates wear.

    Decorating your school backpack

    Fabric pens and paint

Do you love to draw? You can use special fabric pens to make your backpack look amazing. You can draw your favourite animals or write your name. Before you begin, always ask your parents if it is okay. The paint will not come off! When your bag gets dirty, you cannot put it in the washing machine. You have to wash it slowly by hand with warm water. This keeps your beautiful pictures safe.

    Metal pins and badges

Adding small metal pins is a fun way to show what you like. You can buy cheap badges of your favourite bands or sports teams. The best thing is that you can take them off and give them to your classmates if you want something new. You must be careful when you put them on. Always put the sharp part inside the front pocket. If you put them near the top, they can scratch your hands when you open your bag.

    Ribbons and keyrings

Many students love hanging things from their backpack zippers. You can tie bright ribbons or cool keyrings to your bag. However, you must make sure these are quite short. Long ribbons can easily catch on doors or the wheels of your bicycle. Also, try not to use heavy metal keyrings. When you walk down the school halls, they will hit each other and make loud noises. Choose soft, quiet things to hang on your bag instead.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: "Ribbons and keyrings" says the heavy metal keyrings will "hit each other and make loud noises".

11 C - Reason: "Ribbons and keyrings" tells you to "make sure these are quite short" because long ones can catch on doors.

12 A - Reason: "Fabric pens and paint" explains that "you have to wash it slowly by hand with warm water".

13 B - Reason: "Metal pins and badges" says "you can take them off" if you want something new. "Fabric pens and paint" has a trap saying the paint "will not come off".

Swapping clothes for the school play

      Tom

For the school play, I am an old man. I needed a long brown coat and a tall hat. My friend Ben had a perfect coat, so he gave it to me. I was happy because my own coats are too short. I gave Ben my favourite leather jacket because he plays a young rock star. I still need to find a hat. I will ask my grandad this weekend.

      Sara

I play a rich queen in our school show. I needed a beautiful dress, but they are very expensive in shops. Luckily, my classmate Anna had a long blue dress from a party. We swapped! I gave her my silver shoes for her part. The dress was a bit big, but my mum worked hard to make it smaller for me. It fits perfectly now. I am very excited to wear it on stage next week!

      Leo

I am a funny clown in the play. I have to wear very big trousers and bright colours. I asked my friends for help. A boy in my maths class, David, brought some yellow trousers to school. They are huge! I gave him my red shirt because he needs it for his police officer costume. I am glad we can share our things. It saves a lot of money and it is fun to do.
