Spending our holiday money

Jake

I went to London with my school last week. My parents gave me some money for lunches and dinners. But on the first day, I saw a fantastic blue hat in a cool shop. I bought it immediately! It cost nearly all my pocket money. That evening, my classmates went to a nice pizza restaurant. I could not go with them. I just bought some cheap biscuits from the supermarket for my dinner. I was hungry, but I love my new hat!

Lily

During my holiday in Spain, I went to a rock concert with my older brother. The music was amazing! Outside, there was a man selling beautiful T-shirts with the band's name on them. I spent all my holiday money on a black T-shirt. The next day, I was very hungry at lunchtime. I did not have any cash for a burger. Luckily, my brother bought a big sandwich and let me eat half of it. I wear my new T-shirt all the time!

Emma

My friends and I took a train to the beach for the weekend. I saw a beautiful yellow summer dress in a market. I used all my pocket money to buy it. Later, it was very hot. My friends all bought big chocolate ice creams to eat on the sand. I felt sad because my wallet was empty. I could not buy one! My best friend felt sorry for me and bought me a cold bottle of apple juice.

How to Get Lower Prices in Foreign Markets

    Market Rules

When you visit a street market in a new country, remember to bring paper money. Many small sellers do not take credit cards. Before you buy anything, ask the seller for the price. Some markets have small signs with prices on them. If you see a price sign, you usually cannot ask to pay less. The seller will not change it. Also, try to visit the market early in the morning. Sellers often give the best prices to their first customers of the day.

    Smart Shopping

Shopping for presents in a market can be a lot of fun. When you find a nice bag or hat, do not show that you really love it. If the seller thinks you are very excited, they will ask for more money. Always smile and be friendly when you ask for a cheaper price. If the seller says no and the item is still too expensive, just say thank you and walk away slowly. Often, they will call you back with a better offer!

    Tourist Tips

It is a great idea to learn some words before you visit a market in another country. You do not need to speak perfectly, but you should know how to say numbers. This makes it much easier to talk about the price. If you want things to be very cheap, try to buy three or four items from the same person. Sellers usually ask for less money when you buy a lot of things together. Do not forget to take a big bag for your shopping!

      Confusing Clothing Sizes

      Maria

I love buying clothes from websites in other countries. Last week, I ordered a beautiful summer dress from Spain. The sizes were very confusing! In my country, I always buy a size 'Medium' because it uses letters. But the Spanish website only had numbers. I chose a size 40, but when the dress arrived, it was much too small for me. My sister tried it on, but it didn't fit her either. I had to put it in a box and post it back.

      David

My dad went to the USA for work and bought me some blue jeans as a present. I tried them on in my bedroom, but they were huge! American jeans sizes use numbers for how long and wide they are. The label said size 32, but that is different from sizes here. I didn't send them back to America because that costs too much money. Instead, I gave the jeans to my older brother. They look really great on him!

      Lily

Yesterday, my mum and I went to a big department store to buy new sports shoes. I found some great trainers from Japan. But the size on the box was 24! I usually wear a European size 38, so I did not understand. I took my phone out of my bag and looked on the internet to check the Japanese sizes. Then I knew what to get. My mum also bought a nice jacket, but the size was easy to understand.

      Answer Key & Explanations

13 A - Reason: Maria says she loves buying clothes from "websites in other countries" and ordered a dress from Spain.
