Winning a medal at the school swimming competition
Liam
I felt quite nervous before my race. I was the youngest boy there, and the other students looked very fast! My older brother is a brilliant swimmer, and he usually wins everything. I wanted to do well for him. The race was very hard. When it finished, I just wanted to go home and sleep! I got a silver medal, which is amazing. I showed it to my family, and now I keep it safely inside my desk.
Chloe
I really wanted to do well, so I swam at the sports club every single afternoon. When I stood next to the pool, I saw my friends. They are older than me, but they were in a different race. I swam as fast as I could. When the teacher gave me the bronze medal, I couldn't believe it! I never thought I could win anything today. My dad took a lovely photo of me. Next year, I want to win gold!
Max
I only practice my swimming on weekends, but I am quite fast. On the day of the competition, I had a big problem. I couldn't find my swimming hat in my bag! Luckily, my best friend let me borrow his extra one. I swam very well and won first prize. I am so happy! Now, I plan to hang the beautiful gold medal on my bedroom wall. I want to look at it every morning when I wake up.

Guidelines for a Happy Back
Packing Your Bag
Do you carry a lot of books to school? You must pack your bag carefully. Put the heaviest books at the back, close to your body. This makes the bag feel lighter. Remember to clean out your bag every evening. You often carry things you do not need for the next day, like old homework or sports shoes. Take them out! Only pack the things on your school timetable. A lighter bag is always better for your back.
Wearing Your Bag
How do you wear your school bag? You must always use both straps on your shoulders. Many students carry their bags on just one shoulder to look cool. This is a very bad idea and can hurt your neck! You also need to change the length of the straps. The bag must sit high on your back. It should not hang down near your legs. When your bag is high and tight, it is much easier to walk.
Lifting and Waiting
It is important to be careful when you pick up a heavy school bag from the floor. Do not keep your legs straight and bend your back. You must bend your knees to lift it. This keeps your back safe. Also, think about the times when you are waiting for the school bus or talking with friends. You do not need to wear your bag. Take it off and put it on the ground. Give your shoulders a rest!

Helping a classmate with a broken arm
Leo
My friend Charlie broke his arm last weekend. He cannot use his right hand now, so I try to help him. In our history and science lessons, I write the notes for him in his book. He is getting much better at writing with his left hand, though! I also help him in the school dining room. He cannot carry his food with one hand, so I buy his hot meal and bring it to our table.
Mia
My classmate Sarah had a bad fall and broke her arm. She has a big white bandage on it. I help her open the heavy doors at school, and I also open her water bottle for her. She usually loves our PE lessons, and she is really sad because she cannot play basketball right now. She cannot run around outside during our morning break, so I stay inside with her. We sit together and play board games instead.
Tom
My best friend Harry broke his arm on a skiing trip. At the end of the school day, I always put his books and pencil case into his backpack. I carry my bag and his bag to the bus stop. Also, in our IT lessons, he cannot type very fast with only one hand. So, he tells me the answers and I type them on the keyboard for him. Next week, the doctor says his arm will be better!
