Our rules for phones at bedtime

Lucas

I have a strict rule about my phone at night. I never bring it into my bedroom. I always leave it on a table in the kitchen. My friends often send me messages late, but I just answer them the next day. Because my phone is in another room, I use a cheap digital clock to wake me up for school. Before I go to sleep, I usually read a story from a real paper book. It helps me to feel tired.

Emma

Last year, I often stayed awake until midnight because I was typing messages to my friends. Now, I have a new rule. I keep my phone in my bedroom, but I put it on a desk far away from my bed. I cannot reach it when I am lying down. I only use my phone at night to play soft music. Listening to quiet songs is the best way for me to fall asleep. My phone alarm wakes me up in the morning.

Noah

My parents think teenagers spend too much time on screens. They always come into my room at night to see what I am doing. I am allowed to keep my phone next to my bed, but I must turn off the wi-fi at exactly nine o'clock. This stops me from looking at websites or chatting online. I just use my phone as an alarm clock for the next morning. Sometimes I want to play a quick mobile game, but I know sleep is more important.

A guide to using your new money app

    Adding your cash

When you first open the app, you must create an account. Choose a strong password so nobody else can see your information. Next, type in the pocket money you get from your parents. You can tell the app the exact day they usually give you cash. The app will remember this every week. This makes it very easy to track your weekly cash. You do not need a photo of your money, just type the correct numbers!

    Saving for the future

Do you want to buy a new bike or a video game? You can make a special saving plan in the app. First, find a nice picture of the thing you want and add it. Then, type how much it costs. The app looks at your pocket money and tells you how many weeks you must wait to buy it. It is a good idea to check this page before you visit a shop, so you do not spend too much!

    Your shopping history

Every time you visit a shop and pay for something, you must open the app. Type the name of the object and the price. This helps you see where your cash goes. If you buy too many snacks or magazines, the app will send a text message to your phone. It tells you to stop shopping! You can also look at a calendar here, but it only shows the days you went to the shops, not the days you get money.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Your shopping history tells you that every time you visit a shop, you must "Type the name of the object and the price."

8 C - Reason: Your shopping history says that if you buy too much, "the app will send a text message to your phone" to tell you to stop.

9 A - Reason: Adding your cash explains that you should "type in the pocket money you get from your parents."

10 B - Reason: Saving for the future tells you to "find a nice picture of the thing you want and add it."

11 A - Reason: Adding your cash tells you to keep things safe by choosing "a strong password so nobody else can see your information."

12 B - Reason: Saving for the future says the app "tells you how many weeks you must wait to buy it."

13 A - Reason: Adding your cash says you can put in the exact day you get cash and "The app will remember this every week."

      Smart alarm apps for school

      Leo

I am always very tired in the mornings. I need a smart alarm app to help me wake up for school. My app is called MathWake. When the alarm rings, I must do some math problems to stop it. I have to add and take away numbers quickly. It is hard, but it makes my brain work! I am happy because I did not spend any money to get this app. My brother uses a weather app, but he pays for it.

      Maya

I sleep very deeply, so normal alarms do not work for me. I use an app called SnapIt. It plays very loud rock music at seven o'clock. It sometimes wakes up my parents too! To turn the music off, I must stand up and take a photo. The app asks for a picture of my bathroom window or kitchen table. This means I cannot stay in bed. I tried an app with math questions last year, but I hated it.

      Tom

I hate loud noises in the morning. My sister told me about a great app called MorningSun. She uses it every day, and now I do too. Ten minutes before I need to wake up, my phone screen slowly changes to yellow. It looks like the sun! Then, the app plays quiet sounds like rain and birds. I feel very calm when I hear these natural noises. I do not need to walk around my room to turn it off.

12 C - Reason: Tom says that his "sister told me about a great app."
