Learning with Language Apps

Max

I am learning Spanish on my phone. The app gives me points every time I finish a short lesson. It is really fun because I play against my older brother. We always look at who has the most points each week. I want to win, so I never miss a day. I don't play it at home, though. I usually do the language puzzles on the bus when I travel to school. It is a great way to use that time!

Lily

I use a fantastic French app with my classmates. We do not try to beat each other. Instead, we love collecting special things in the game. When I learn a new word, the app gives me digital coins. I can use them to buy cute hats and clothes for my online character. I like doing my daily practice at night. I always finish a short language game in bed before I go to sleep. It helps me remember the words!

Omar

Learning Japanese on my phone is amazing. The app is exactly like a normal video game. I have to finish all the small tasks to open the next big level. My favourite part is the listening game. I hear a short story and choose the correct picture. I like to keep my evenings free for my homework. Because of this, I always play on my language app while I eat my breakfast. Starting my morning with a fun game is brilliant.

Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Omar says that he will "always play on my language app while I eat my breakfast."

8 A - Reason: Max explains that he wants to win and plays "against my older brother."

12 B - Reason: Lily explains that she will always finish a game "in bed before I go to sleep."

Eye Care Guidelines for E-Book Readers

    ScreenSmart Guide

Do you love reading stories on your tablet? It is fun, but you must keep your eyes healthy. First, check your screen light. If it looks like a very bright sun, it is too high. You need to turn it down. Also, when you read an amazing book, you sometimes forget to close and open your eyes. You should do this often to stop your eyes feeling dry. Remember to stop reading for five minutes every half hour!

    ReadWell Tips

When you read e-books, you must think about the light in your room. Never read in a dark bedroom. You should always turn on a desk lamp. Next, do not hold your tablet very near to your face. Keep it at arm's length! Sometimes, the words on the screen are very small and hard to read. You do not have to put the screen closer to your eyes. Just change the settings to make the letters bigger.

    HappyEyes Notice

Reading e-books is a great hobby, but your eyes need a rest too. It is a bad idea to look at screens right before you sleep. You should turn off your e-reader one hour before bed. During the day, give your eyes a break from the tablet. Go outdoors and play in the garden or the park. Looking at things far away is really good for your eyes. You can also try moving your eyes up and down.

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 B - Reason: Text B says to change the settings to "make the letters bigger." Text C has a negative trap about looking at things "far away."

8 C - Reason: Text C tells you to "Go outdoors and play in the garden or the park."

9 A - Reason: Text A says you sometimes forget to "close and open your eyes" and tells you to "do this often." Text B has a trap using the word "eyes" but talks about putting the screen closer.

10 C - Reason: Text C says it is a bad idea to look at screens "right before you sleep" and tells you to turn off your e-reader before bed. Text B has a trap mentioning a "bedroom" but talks about lighting.

11 B - Reason: Text B explains you should not hold the tablet "very near to your face" and to keep it at "arm's length."

12 B - Reason: Text B tells you that you should "always turn on a desk lamp."

13 A - Reason: Text A explains that if the screen looks like a "very bright sun," you need to "turn it down." Text B has a trap about light, but it refers to the light in your room, not the screen brightness.

      Building virtual worlds

      Liam

I love building modern cities in our favourite online game. My school friends and I always build tall buildings and large streets. I am very good at making big things, but I think it is difficult to make small things, like chairs and tables! I am always very busy with my homework during the week. Because of this, I only turn on my computer to play on Saturdays and Sundays. Some people draw their cities first, but I just start building!

      Sophia

My brother and I share a beautiful virtual world. We don't like building busy cities. Instead, we love making big forests and adding lots of animals to them. It is very relaxing. We usually play together for an hour after dinner. When we don't want to build, we walk around and look at the amazing places that other players have made. It gives us great new ideas! We want to build an old castle next, but we need more stone.

      Noah

I play the game with some friends I met on the internet. We usually build things from the past, like old castles and bridges. I love history! Before I start playing, I always use a pencil to draw a picture of what I want to make. It helps me build faster. My friends are great, but sometimes I prefer to build quietly by myself without any help. I play every afternoon, so my world is very big now!

      Answer Key & Explanations

7 C - Reason: Noah says he usually builds "things from the past," which means places from history. Sophia only talks about building an old castle in the future.

8 B - Reason: Sophia says that "My brother and I share a beautiful virtual world." Her brother is a family member.

9 A - Reason: Liam explains that he only plays "on Saturdays and Sundays," which means at the weekend.

10 B - Reason: Sophia says she likes to "look at the amazing places that other players have made."

11 C - Reason: Noah states that he uses "a pencil to draw a picture" before he starts playing. Liam mentions drawing, but explicitly says he does not do it.

12 A - Reason: Liam says "it is difficult to make small things," which means it is hard to do.

13 C - Reason: Noah explains that sometimes he prefers to "build quietly by myself without any help," which means he likes to work alone.
