Teenagers and Screen Time
Leo
I love playing sports games on my phone. It is my favourite hobby. But sometimes I play for three or four hours without stopping. When I do this, my eyes hurt and I get a terrible headache. I always tell myself to stop and do something else, but it is really hard to put it down. Now, I try to leave my phone in the kitchen when I am in my bedroom. That helps me a little bit.
Mia
I use my phone a lot to chat with my friends and do my school work online. My parents used to say I spent too much time on it. I noticed that if I looked at my screen late at night, I couldn't fall asleep easily. The next day, I always felt very tired. So, I decided to change my habits. Now, I read a book in bed instead of looking at my phone, which is much better.
Sam
I really enjoy watching funny videos on the internet. The problem is that I often spend the whole afternoon looking at them. When this happens, I completely forget to do my homework or clean my room. I always feel bad about it later. Now, my mum keeps my phone downstairs after dinner. I don't mind giving it to her because I know I need a break. It helps me focus on more important things.
Answer Key & Explanations
7 A - Reason: Leo says that "it is really hard to put it down," which matches finding it difficult to stop using the phone.
8 B - Reason: Mia explains that looking at her screen late at night meant she couldn't sleep and "felt very tired" the next day.
9 C - Reason: Sam admits that when he watches videos all afternoon, he will "completely forget to do my homework."

Choosing a Safe Username for Online Gaming
GameSafe Website
When you choose a new name for online games, you must be careful. Never use your real first or last name. You should also not use the year you were born because people can guess how old you are. So, what can you use? It is a great idea to use words about your hobbies. If you love music and cats, you can be 'GuitarCat'. It is fun to make up funny names! Remember, you can always ask your friends for ideas if you need help.
ProGamer Tips
A good gaming name must be easy to remember. You should make sure your name is quite short. If it is too long, it takes a lot of time to type during a fast game! Sometimes, you will think of a brilliant name, but the game says you cannot use it. This happens when another player already has that name. When this happens, just change the spelling a little bit or try a different word. You do not need to ask your parents to do this.
CyberTeen Hub
Online safety is very important when you play games. You should never include the name of your school or your town in your username. Bad people can use this information to find you. The best names use a cool word and a few numbers at the end. For example, 'BlueDragon44' is a very safe choice. Before you start playing with a new name, you must show it to your mum or dad. They can tell you if it is perfectly safe to use online.
Answer Key & Explanations
7 C - Reason: The text says you must "show it to your mum or dad", which means an older person in your family. Text B uses a negative trap saying you "do not need to ask your parents".
8 C - Reason: The text tells you to "never include the name of your school", which is the place where you study.
9 B - Reason: The text explains that if a name is too long, it "takes a lot of time to type", which means you need a short name that is fast to write.
10 A - Reason: The text says "use words about your hobbies", which is a paraphrase for free-time activities.
11 A - Reason: The text says you should "not use the year you were born", matching the instruction not to show when you were born.
12 B - Reason: The text explains what to do when "another player already has that name", which means someone else is using it.
13 C - Reason: The text says the best names have "a few numbers at the end", which means finishing the name with numbers.

Waiting for a text message
Leo
When I send a text message, I usually want an answer right away. If my friends don't reply, I start to feel afraid that something bad has happened to them. I don't think they are just busy doing their homework. Usually, I wait for about twenty minutes. If there is still no message, I just call them to check everything is OK. Some people leave their phone in another room, but I always keep mine in my pocket so I can hear it ring.
Maya
I feel quite cross when my friends don't answer my texts. I always send a message back as soon as I get one. I don't understand why people take so long. I know they aren't sleeping or working. They are probably just watching funny videos online! When someone doesn't reply, I don't call them. Instead, I put my mobile in my bedroom and go downstairs to watch TV. This helps me to forget about the message until they finally answer me.
Sam
I don't worry if people don't answer my texts quickly. It doesn't make me angry, either. I just think they are probably doing their homework, or maybe having dinner with their family. Everyone is busy, so I just read a book or play my guitar while I wait. Actually, I am quite bad at answering messages myself! I often read a text, put my phone down, and then completely forget to reply to my friend. So, I understand why other people do it too!
Answer Key & Explanations
7 B - Reason: Maya says that she feels "quite cross" (which means angry) when her friends do not answer. Sam explicitly says it doesn't make him angry.
8 B - Reason: Maya states that she puts her mobile in her bedroom and goes downstairs. Leo mentions leaving the phone in another room as something other people do, but he keeps his in his pocket.
9 C - Reason: Sam explains that he often reads a text, puts his phone down, and then will "completely forget to reply." Maya uses the word 'forget', but means forgetting about the message she sent, not forgetting to reply.
10 C - Reason: Sam says he thinks his friends are "probably doing their homework." Leo mentions homework, but explicitly says he doesn't think they are doing it.
11 A - Reason: Leo states that if he doesn't get a message, he will "call them to check everything is OK." Maya explicitly says "I don't call them."
12 A - Reason: Leo explains that he starts to "feel afraid that something bad has happened to them." Sam explicitly notes that he doesn't worry.
13 B - Reason: Maya says "I always send a message back as soon as I get one," which is a paraphrase of replying immediately.
