Walking to School

Sam

I always used to go to school in my dad's car. Last month, I decided to start walking with two classmates. I wanted to get fit and do more exercise before lessons. It takes twenty minutes to walk to school. My legs felt tired at first, but now I feel great. We often play word games on the way. I only ask my dad to drive me if it is raining heavily. I do not want to sit in class with wet clothes!

Mia

My mom used to drive me to school every morning. Then, her car stopped working in January. I had to walk to school with the girls next door. Now, the car is fine again, but I still choose to walk! It is the best part of my day because I really enjoy talking with my friends. We share funny stories before we start our classes. It is much better than sitting quietly in the car. We even save money because we do not buy petrol.

Tom

My friends and I stopped taking the car to school because we wanted to help the planet. Cars make the air very dirty, so walking is a much cleaner choice. Now, I have to get out of bed thirty minutes earlier than before. I do not mind because the morning air is nice and fresh. Sometimes my older brother walks with us. He brings his dog, Buster. Buster loves the walk, and we all have fun playing with him before we go inside.

Taking good notes on an art gallery tour

    Drawing Notes

You do not need to write everything when the tour guide talks. Sometimes, a quick drawing is better than words. Look at the art and draw simple shapes in your notebook. You can add one or two words next to your picture. For example, write the colours the artist used. This helps you remember the painting later. Do not worry if your drawing is bad. The guide loves it when students look closely at the art!

    Listening First

Many students make a big mistake at the art gallery. They write notes while the tour guide is talking. If you do this, you cannot see the beautiful paintings! You should stand quietly and listen to the guide first. When they finish speaking, you can write down the most important words. Just write the artist's name and the year they made the painting. You can ask the guide to repeat these details if you forget them.

    Phone Notes

You can use your mobile phone to take great notes in the art gallery. First, ask the tour guide if you can take pictures. If they say yes, take a photo of your favourite painting. Then, type a short message about it on your phone. You can write how the painting makes you feel. Did it make you happy or sad? You should look at these photos and notes when you get home. It makes doing your art homework very easy!

    Answer Key & Explanations

7 B - Reason: The "Listening First" tip says to "write the artist's name and the year they made the painting."

10 B - Reason: The "Listening First" tip says you should "listen to the guide first" and write "when they finish speaking."

11 C - Reason: The "Phone Notes" tip says, "You can write how the painting makes you feel."

12 A - Reason: The "Drawing Notes" tip tells you that the "guide loves it when students look closely at the art!"

13 A - Reason: The "Drawing Notes" tip suggests that you "write the colours the artist used."

Using foreign languages on a school trip

      Liam

Last month, my class went on a trip to Spain. We visited a very famous castle. After that, we were really hungry. We found a small cafe, but the menu was only in Spanish. My friend Jack didn't understand the words and he didn't know what to choose. I study Spanish at school, so I read the menu for him. I also ordered sandwiches and drinks for our group. The cafe worker smiled at me. I was glad I could help my friends.

      Emma

Our school trip to France was great. One day, we wanted to visit a big art museum. We walked for a long time, but we couldn't find it. Our teacher didn't have a map and didn't know the way. I decided to stop a woman in the street and ask her the way in French. She understood me and gave us clear directions. We found the museum five minutes later! I felt very happy because my French was good enough to help everyone.

      Noah

I loved our school trip to Germany. We visited a park in Berlin and we had a lovely picnic there. Some local boys were playing football. I love football, so I went to talk to them. I used my German to ask if I could play with them. They said yes, and we had a great game! I made friends with a boy called Lukas. We still send text messages to each other every week, and I always write in German.
