Walking the Great Wall
15-year-old George writes about a special trip to China.
My name is George, and I am 15 years old. Last month, I went on an amazing holiday to China with my parents. We visited the famous Great Wall. Most tourists only walk for a short time, but I wanted to do something more difficult. I decided to walk along a very long and high part of the wall because I wanted a good challenge to improve my fitness.
On the day of the walk, the weather was sunny and clear. My parents and I started walking very early in the morning. The wall has thousands of steps, and some of them are quite tall. For the first three hours, everything was fantastic. I took lots of photos and enjoyed looking at the beautiful green mountains around us.
However, after a few hours, I had a terrible problem. My left shoe was too tight, and my big toe started to hurt a lot. It was very painful, and I couldn't walk properly anymore. I had to sit down on one of the steps. I felt quite sad because I thought I had to stop and wait for my parents to finish the walk without me.
Then, I remembered my backpack. I looked inside it and found a pair of special thick walking socks. I quickly took off my thin socks and put the thick ones on. Immediately, my foot felt much better! The thick material stopped the shoe from hurting my toe.
I stood up and continued walking with my parents. It took two more hours, but I successfully finished the whole path. I felt extremely proud of myself when I reached the end. Next year, I want to travel to a different country and do another difficult walk!
14 Why did George choose a long part of the Great Wall?
A to avoid all the other tourists on the wall
B to help himself to get fitter and stronger
C to show his parents how fast he can walk
15 What does George say about the first three hours of his walk?
A He felt very tired because he woke up so early.
B He had a problem with some of the tall steps.
C He liked seeing the countryside around him.
16 Why did George sit down on a step?
A He was waiting for his parents to catch up with him.
B He had a lot of pain in a part of his foot.
C His left shoe was completely broken.
17 How did George solve his problem?
A He put something different on his feet.
B He changed the shoes he was wearing.
C He put something soft inside his backpack.
18 What is George planning to do next year?
A spend more time relaxing on his next holiday
B return to China to walk the Great Wall again
C try another walking challenge somewhere else
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, George says he chose the long part of the wall "because I wanted a good challenge to improve my fitness." This matches Option B. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the text mentions tourists, but George didn't choose the walk to avoid them. Option C is an invented detail; his parents were there, but he didn't do it to show them how fast he could walk.
15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, George says that during the first three hours, he "enjoyed looking at the beautiful green mountains around us." This matches Option C. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he started early, but he felt "fantastic," not tired. Option B is a wrong timing trap; there were tall steps, but he didn't have a problem with them during the first three hours.
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, George explains that his "big toe started to hurt a lot. It was very painful... I had to sit down". This matches Option B (pain in his foot). Option A is a wrong reference trap; he thought he would have to wait for his parents to finish the walk without him, not wait for them to catch up. Option C is a wrong logic trap; his shoe was "too tight," but it was not broken.
17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, George says he "took off my thin socks and put the thick ones on." This matches Option A (put something different on his feet). Option B is a partial truth trap; he changed his socks, but he didn't change his shoes. Option C is a wrong reference trap; he took the socks out of his backpack, he didn't put something soft inside it.
18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, George states his future plan: "Next year, I want to travel to a different country and do another difficult walk!" This matches Option C. Option A is the opposite of his plan; he wants to do a difficult walk, not relax. Option B is a partial truth trap; he wants to do another walk, but explicitly says he wants to go to a "different country," not back to China.

Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Dancing on the sand
14-year-old Hannah writes about a new activity she tried in South America.
Hi, I'm Hannah and I am fourteen years old. Last month, I went on a wonderful holiday to Brazil with my family. While we were walking on the beach one evening, I saw some people doing something very unusual. They were doing Capoeira. It is a very interesting mix of a sport, a dance and a fight! Today on my blog, I want to tell you about my experience of trying it.
At first, I just stood and watched them. They moved together in a circle while some people played loud, fast music. The players didn't actually hit each other, but they swung their legs very close to the other person's head. It looked absolutely amazing, and they were so fast! I really wanted to try it, so a friendly teacher invited me to join the group.
I thought it would be quite easy because I usually do a lot of dancing at home. However, I was completely wrong! The teacher showed me how to do a cool jump called a backflip. I tried to copy him, but my legs were too slow. I didn't land on my feet, and I fell flat on my back in the soft sand! Everyone smiled, but they were very kind to me and helped me stand up.
Capoeira is a fantastic activity, but it is much harder than it looks. If you ever travel to Brazil and want to try it, I have some advice for you. Don't try to do the big, dangerous jumps on your first day! It is much better to learn the slow, basic side-steps to the music first. That way, you will stay safe and have a lot of fun on the beach.
14 How did Hannah learn about Capoeira?
A She read a blog about unusual sports.
B She learned about it in a dance class at home.
C She saw some people doing it during her holiday.
15 What did Hannah think when she watched the players?
A They moved very quickly to the music.
B They were trying to hit each other's heads.
C They played the music much too loudly.
16 Why did Hannah fall in the sand?
A She was too tired from dancing at home.
B She wasn't fast enough to do the jump.
C The teacher pushed her over by mistake.
17 What is Hannah's advice for tourists?
A find a quiet beach to practice on
B try doing some big jumps on the first day
C begin with some simple movements
18 What is the best title for this blog post?
A My difficult first Capoeira lesson
B How to win a fight in Brazil
C The best music to listen to on the beach
Answer Key & Explanations
14 C - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Hannah explains that she went on holiday to Brazil and "saw some people doing something very unusual" on the beach. Option C correctly paraphrases this event. Option A is a wrong logic trap; Hannah is writing a blog about her experience, she didn't read one to learn about it. Option B is a partial truth trap; she says Capoeira is like a dance, but she discovered it on the beach, not in a class at home.
15 A - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Hannah says the players "moved together" to fast music and "they were so fast!" Option A accurately matches this observation. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text specifically notes that the players "didn't actually hit each other". Option C is a wrong logic trap; she says the music was loud, but she thought the whole thing "looked absolutely amazing," not that the music was too loud.
16 B - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Hannah explains that she tried a jump, but "my legs were too slow. I didn't land on my feet". Option B correctly paraphrases not being fast enough. Option A is a wrong reference trap; she mentions dancing at home as the reason she thought Capoeira would be easy, not the reason she was tired. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the teacher was friendly and showed her a jump, he didn't push her.
17 C - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Hannah advises readers to "learn the slow, basic side-steps to the music first." Option C correctly paraphrases starting with simple movements. Option A is a partial truth trap; she mentions the beach, but never tells tourists to look for a quiet one. Option B is a wrong logic trap; she explicitly warns readers, "Don't try to do the big, dangerous jumps on your first day!"
18 A - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog is about Hannah trying Capoeira in Brazil, finding the moves much harder than she expected, falling down, and offering advice to beginners. Option A perfectly summarizes this experience. Option B is a wrong logic trap; Capoeira looks like a fight, but the text says they don't actually hit each other. Option C is a partial truth trap; music and the beach are mentioned, but they are just background details, not the main topic of the blog.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A funny mistake on the water
Ian, 16, writes about a special trip during his holiday.
Hi! I’m Ian, and I’m 16 years old. Last week, I went on a fantastic holiday to Canada with my family. We stayed near a huge, beautiful lake. I really love water sports, so I decided to rent a small boat called a kayak for the afternoon. I wanted to explore the quiet water and get some good exercise for my arms at the same time.
When I first started my trip, the weather was perfect. The sun was warm, and the water was very flat and quiet. I used my heavy wooden paddle to move the kayak across the lake. I travelled for about an hour and saw some amazing tall trees and lovely birds. It was very relaxing, and I felt really happy to be outside in nature.
However, suddenly, I had a big problem. A small insect flew near my face, and it made me sneeze very loudly! Because I was so surprised, I opened my hands and accidentally dropped my paddle into the water. The kayak kept moving forward, but the paddle stayed behind. Soon, it was floating far away from me. I couldn't reach it!
Without my paddle, I couldn't move the boat properly. I had to think quickly. I leaned over the side of the kayak and put my hands into the cold water. I used my arms to push the water and slowly move the boat back to my floating paddle. It was very hard work! When I finally grabbed the wood, I just sat there and laughed loudly at myself. It was a silly mistake, but I had a great time!
14 Why did Ian rent a kayak?
A to discover the lake and do some exercise
B to spend the afternoon with his family
C to learn how to do a new water sport
15 What did Ian do during the first hour of his trip?
A He stopped his boat to relax in the warm sun.
B He looked at the beautiful nature around him.
C He took some amazing photos of the birds.
16 Why did Ian's paddle go into the water?
A He threw it at a bug near his face.
B He wanted to try moving the boat with his hands.
C He sneezed and dropped it by mistake.
17 How did Ian get his paddle back?
A He waited for it to float back to him.
B He used his hands to move the boat to it.
C He asked someone in the water to help him reach it.
18 How did Ian feel when he finally got his paddle?
A He was annoyed because his hands were very cold.
B He thought that his mistake was very funny.
C He felt too tired to finish his trip on the lake.
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Ian says, "I wanted to explore the quiet water and get some good exercise for my arms" (discover the lake and do some exercise). B is a wrong reference trap; he was on holiday with his family, but he rented the kayak for himself. C is wrong logic; he says he already loves water sports, so it is not a new sport for him to learn.
15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Ian says he "travelled for about an hour and saw some amazing tall trees and lovely birds" (looked at the beautiful nature). A is a wrong logic trap; he says it was relaxing and the sun was warm, but he didn't stop his boat. C is a partial truth trap; he saw lovely birds, but the text never says he took photos of them.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Ian explains that an insect "made me sneeze very loudly... and accidentally dropped my paddle" (he sneezed and dropped it by mistake). A is a partial truth trap; an insect (bug) flew near his face, but he didn't throw the paddle at it. B is wrong logic; he had to move the boat with his hands after he lost the paddle, he didn't drop it because he wanted to try doing that.
17 B - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, Ian says, "I put my hands into the cold water. I used my arms to push the water and slowly move the boat back to my floating paddle." A is wrong logic; the paddle was floating away, so he couldn't wait for it to come back to him. C is a wrong reference trap; he was alone, so he didn't ask anyone for help.
18 B - Explanation: This is a specific detail question about the final paragraph. Ian says, "When I finally grabbed the wood, I just sat there and laughed loudly at myself" (thought his mistake was very funny). A is a partial truth trap; he put his hands in cold water, but he wasn't annoyed by it. C is a partial truth trap; he says it was "hard work," but he doesn't say he was too tired to finish his trip.
