Victor's Farm Adventure
12-year-old Victor writes about a special science trip with his class.
My name is Victor and I am 12 years old. Last week, my science teacher took my class on a special trip. We travelled by bus to a large local farm. Our teacher wanted us to learn about where our food comes from and how farmers look after their animals. First, the farmer showed us the big dairy cows. We watched them eat and learned how they produce milk for our school dinners. I found it very interesting because I love drinking milk.
After we visited the cows, we walked to a different part of the farm to see the smaller animals. There were sheep, chickens, and some very noisy goats. The farmer told us that the goats were very friendly, but we had to stay behind the wooden fence. I stood at the front of the group so I could get into a good position to take photos with my camera.
Suddenly, something unexpected happened. A small baby goat found a hole in the wooden fence and escaped from its pen. It ran very fast across the grass and came straight towards me! I was very surprised, and it made me jump. Some of my classmates started laughing, and a few of them ran away because they were a little bit afraid.
But I didn't run away. I decided to stay completely calm. I had a sweet carrot in my lunchbox, so I slowly took it out and offered it to the baby goat. The goat stopped running and happily ate the carrot from my hand. The farmer quickly came over and picked the goat up. He smiled and thanked me for my great animal skills. Because of this trip, I now want to get a weekend job on a farm when I am older!
14 Why did the class go to the farm?
A to discover how people care for farm animals
B to drink some fresh milk with their school dinners
C to show their science teacher where food comes from
15 What did Victor do when he saw the goats?
A He climbed over the wooden fence to see them.
B He found a good place to use his camera.
C He made a lot of noise with the other animals.
16 What did Victor do when the goat ran towards him?
A He moved suddenly because he wasn't expecting it.
B He ran away because he felt a little afraid.
C He started laughing at his classmates.
17 How did Victor stop the baby goat?
A He quickly picked the animal up from the grass.
B He called the farmer to come over and help him.
C He gave the animal something to eat from his lunch.
18 What is Victor planning to do in the future?
A buy more sweet carrots for his school lunchbox
B find some work with farm animals one day
C go on another school trip next weekend
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In paragraph 1, the text says the teacher wanted the students to learn "how farmers look after their animals" (discover how people care for farm animals). Option B is a partial truth trap; they learned about milk for their school dinners, but they didn't go to the farm to drink it with dinner. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the teacher took them to learn, they didn't show the teacher.
15 B - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Victor states, "I stood at the front of the group so I could get into a good position to take photos" (found a good place to use his camera). Option A is a wrong logic trap; the text says they "had to stay behind the wooden fence," not climb over it. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the goats were "very noisy," not Victor.
16 A - Explanation: In paragraph 3, the text says Victor was "very surprised, and it made me jump" (moved suddenly because he wasn't expecting it). Option B is a wrong reference trap; a few of his classmates ran away because they were afraid, not Victor. Option C is also a wrong reference trap; his classmates started laughing, Victor didn't laugh at them.
17 C - Explanation: In paragraph 4, the text explains that Victor had a carrot in his lunchbox and he "took it out and offered it to the baby goat" (gave the animal something to eat). Option A is a wrong reference trap; the farmer picked the goat up, not Victor. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the farmer came over quickly, but Victor didn't call him for help.
18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Victor says, "I now want to get a weekend job on a farm when I am older!" (find some work with farm animals). Option A is a wrong logic trap; he had a carrot in his lunchbox today, but buying more is not his future plan. Option C is a partial truth trap; the school trip made him want a job, but he isn't planning to go on another trip next weekend.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A trip to the castle
Thirteen-year-old Wendy writes about a funny experience with her school history club.
I am Wendy, and I am thirteen years old. I love learning about the past, so I joined my school's history club this year. Last week, our club went on a special trip. We visited a beautiful 500-year-old castle because our teacher wanted us to learn about knights. I was very excited to see how people lived a long time ago.
In the morning, we walked through the different rooms of the castle. My favourite place was the large hall. There were a lot of old weapons and heavy metal clothes there. Our tour guide picked up a metal helmet and smiled. He told us that we could try it on. I quickly put my hand up because I wanted to wear it first.
The helmet felt incredibly heavy on my head, and it was completely dark inside. After a minute, I tried to take it off, but I couldn't move it. The helmet was stuck! I started to feel a bit worried because I couldn't see anything. I had to stand there for five minutes with the heavy metal on my head while everyone tried to help.
Finally, two of my friends held my shoulders, and the teacher pulled the helmet off very carefully. My head felt fine, but everyone laughed because my hair was so messy! Before we went home, we visited the castle gift shop. My friends and I didn't want to wear heavy metal clothes again, so we bought some funny plastic helmets instead. We wore them all the way home on the bus!
14 Why did the history club visit the castle?
A The teacher wanted them to find out about knights.
B The students decided to start a new school club.
C Wendy asked her teacher if they could go there.
15 What happened in the large hall?
A The tour guide invited the students to wear something.
B Wendy found some of her old metal clothes.
C The teacher smiled and picked up a heavy weapon.
16 How did Wendy feel when the helmet was on her head?
A afraid because it was very dark in the large hall
B worried because she couldn't take it off
C angry because her friends made her stand still
17 How did Wendy get the helmet off?
A She carefully pulled it off her own shoulders.
B Her friends and her teacher helped her to do it.
C She pushed her messy hair out of the way.
18 Why did Wendy and her friends buy the plastic helmets?
A They needed something to wear on the bus journey.
B They didn't want to put real metal ones on again.
C They wanted to buy a funny present for their teacher.
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The text states, "We visited a beautiful 500-year-old castle because our teacher wanted us to learn about knights." Option A correctly paraphrases this reason. Option B is wrong logic; Wendy joined the club this year, but starting the club is not why they went to the castle. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the teacher made the decision, Wendy did not ask to go.
15 A - Explanation: The text says the tour guide picked up a helmet and "told us that we could try it on." Option A matches this perfectly. Option B is a wrong reference trap; there were metal clothes in the room, but they were not Wendy's old clothes from home. Option C is a partial truth trap; there were weapons in the room, but the tour guide picked up a helmet, not the teacher picking up a weapon.
16 B - Explanation: The text explains that Wendy "tried to take it off, but I couldn't move it" and then says, "I started to feel a bit worried". Option B correctly matches her feeling and the reason. Option A is a partial truth trap; it was dark inside the helmet, not in the large hall. Option C is wrong logic; she wasn't angry, and her friends didn't make her stand still (the stuck helmet did).
17 B - Explanation: The text states that "two of my friends held my shoulders, and the teacher pulled the helmet off". Option B correctly summarises that they helped her do it. Option A is a wrong reference trap; her friends held her shoulders, but she did not pull the helmet off herself. Option C is wrong logic; her hair was messy after the helmet came off, it wasn't how she removed it.
18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text says, "My friends and I didn't want to wear heavy metal clothes again, so we bought some funny plastic helmets instead." Option B correctly paraphrases this reason. Option A is a wrong logic trap; they wore them on the bus, but they bought them because they didn't like the metal ones, not because they needed bus clothes. Option C is wrong reference; they bought the helmets for themselves, not for the teacher.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
The Beach Clean-up
15-year-old Alex writes about a special trip to help the environment.
My name is Alex, and I am 15 years old. Last weekend, my teachers organised a special school trip to the coast. We travelled by bus for two hours to reach a popular local beach and do a big clean-up. A lot of tourists visit this beach in the summer, and sadly, they often leave their rubbish behind. The sand was very messy, and we wanted to help the environment by making the beach clean and beautiful again.
When we arrived, the teachers gave us large black bags to put the rubbish in. We spent all morning walking near the sea, picking up hundreds of empty plastic bottles and sweet wrappers. It was actually a lot of fun working together with my classmates in the fresh air. When I looked at my full bag, I felt very pleased and satisfied. It was wonderful to see the beach looking so much better than before.
However, we soon discovered that cleaning a beach can also be quite dangerous. While we were working, my friend almost cut his hand on some sharp, broken glass. The glass was hidden just under the sand, so it was very difficult to see. We had to look very carefully before we picked anything up because we didn't want anyone to get a bad injury on the school trip.
Because of this danger, I have some important advice for anyone who wants to volunteer for a clean-up trip in the future. You definitely need to bring some thick, protective gloves with you. They will stop you from cutting your fingers and keep your hands completely safe while you work. Cleaning the environment is a fantastic thing to do, but it is very important to look after yourself first!
14 Why did Alex and his classmates go to the beach?
A to clear away the rubbish that tourists left behind
B to spend their summer holidays with the tourists
C to learn how to drive a school bus to the coast
15 How did Alex feel about picking up the plastic?
A He was angry because his classmates didn't help him.
B He was tired from carrying heavy black bags all morning.
C He was happy to see the positive result of his hard work.
16 What problem did the students have on the beach?
A One of Alex's friends cut his hand badly.
B It was hard to notice the dangerous pieces of glass.
C The teachers hid things in the sand for them to find.
17 What does Alex advise future volunteers to do?
A wash their hands carefully after they finish working
B wear something thick to keep their hands safe
C bring extra bags to put the broken glass inside
18 What is Alex doing in this text?
A explaining why tourists should stop visiting the local beach
B describing a school trip and giving advice on how to do it safely
C telling his classmates to work harder to protect the environment
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In paragraph 1, the text states that tourists "leave their rubbish behind" and the students went to do a "big clean-up" and make the beach "clean and beautiful again," which matches A. B is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions the summer and tourists, but the students didn't go there to spend their holidays with them. C is wrong logic; they travelled by bus, but they didn't go there to learn how to drive it.
15 C - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Alex says, "I felt very pleased and satisfied. It was wonderful to see the beach looking so much better," which makes C the correct answer (pleased = happy). A is a wrong logic trap; the text says it was "a lot of fun working together with my classmates," not that they didn't help. B is a partial truth trap; they used black bags all morning, but he felt pleased, not tired.
16 B - Explanation: Paragraph 3 explains that the sharp glass "was hidden just under the sand, so it was very difficult to see," matching B (hard to notice). A is a partial truth trap; his friend almost cut his hand, but he didn't actually cut it badly. C is a wrong logic trap; the glass was hidden in the sand, but the teachers didn't hide it for them to find.
17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Alex advises volunteers to "bring some thick, protective gloves" to "keep your hands completely safe," which matches B. A is a partial truth trap; he talks about keeping hands safe, but he doesn't mention washing them afterwards. C is a wrong logic trap; he tells them to bring gloves, not extra bags for the glass.
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. Throughout the text, Alex writes an informative blog describing his beach clean-up trip (Paragraphs 1-3) and ends by giving protective advice for future volunteers (Paragraph 4), making B the correct answer. A is wrong logic; he mentions tourists leaving rubbish, but never says they shouldn't visit. C is a wrong reference trap; he advises future volunteers to protect themselves, he isn't telling his classmates to work harder.
