A different kind of picture

Sometimes a bad situation can help you do your best work!

Fifteen-year-old Evan loves his art classes at school. Last month, his art teacher planned a special trip for his class. They travelled to Barcelona, a famous city in Spain. The teacher wanted everyone to look at the strange and beautiful buildings there. Evan's job for his school project was to take lots of photos of them. He was very excited about the trip.

On the first morning, Evan and his friends walked around the city centre. The weather was warm and sunny. Soon, Evan saw an amazing building. It had lots of bright colours and no straight lines. He quickly took his expensive camera out of his bag to take a picture of it.

But then, something terrible happened. Another tourist walked past and accidentally hit Evan's arm. Evan dropped his camera, and it fell hard onto the street. When he picked it up, he saw that the glass lens was completely broken. He couldn't take any photos at all. Evan felt very worried about his school project.

However, Evan quickly thought of a good idea. He walked into a small shop and bought a cheap paper sketchbook and some pencils. Instead of taking photos, he decided to sit down and draw the beautiful buildings by hand. He spent the whole afternoon doing this.

When Evan went back to school, he showed his drawings to his art teacher. He explained what happened to his camera. The teacher wasn't angry. In fact, she loved the drawings so much that she gave him top marks! Evan felt very proud. Next weekend, he is going to paint his favourite drawing and put it on his bedroom wall!

14   Why did Evan travel to Barcelona?

A to take pictures for a school project

B to learn how to build strange buildings

C to visit a famous art teacher in Spain

15   What did Evan do when he saw the amazing building?

A He drew a picture of its bright colours.

B He got his camera ready to use it.

C He bought an expensive photo of it.

16   Why did Evan drop his camera?

A The camera was too heavy for him to hold.

B He tripped and fell down on the street.

C Another person hit his arm by mistake.

17   How did Evan get pictures of the buildings?

A He borrowed a cheap camera from a shop.

B He drew them on some paper himself.

C He asked his friends to take them for him.

18   What is Evan planning to do next weekend?

A make a painting to go in his room

B buy a beautiful new camera

C give his best drawing to his teacher

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says Evan's job "was to take lots of photos of them" for his "school project." Option B is wrong logic; he went to look at the strange buildings, not learn how to build them. Option C is a wrong reference trap; he went with his school art teacher, he didn't travel to visit a famous one.

15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says he "quickly took his expensive camera out of his bag to take a picture" (got his camera ready). Option A is a wrong time trap; he drew pictures later in the story, not when he first saw the building. Option C is a partial truth trap; the word "expensive" is used for his camera, but he didn't buy a photo.

16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because "Another tourist walked past and accidentally hit Evan's arm" (hit by mistake). Option A is not in the text; it says the camera was expensive, not heavy. Option B is wrong logic; the camera fell onto the street, Evan did not fall down himself.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Evan decided to "draw the beautiful buildings by hand" on a "paper sketchbook". Option A is a partial truth trap; he went to a shop and bought something cheap, but it was a sketchbook, not a cheap camera. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions his friends, but he didn't ask them to take photos for him.

18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Evan says he is going to "paint his favourite drawing and put it on his bedroom wall!" Option B is wrong logic; his camera broke on the trip, but there is no mention of buying a new one next weekend. Option C is wrong logic; he already showed his drawings to his teacher, he isn't planning to give the best one to her next weekend.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A historic trip in the rain!

Fourteen-year-old Fiona writes a blog about her class trip to an old town.

My name is Fiona and I am 14 years old. Last week, my class went on a special school trip. We travelled by bus to a beautiful old town in England. It is a very famous place because the great writer William Shakespeare was born there. I decided to write this blog to tell other students about our day out.

The town was very interesting to explore. We walked down the small, quiet streets and looked at all the different buildings. The best part of the trip for me was seeing the old houses. They are hundreds of years old and they look absolutely amazing. We also went inside the house where Shakespeare lived as a boy, which was really great to see.

However, there was one big problem with our trip. The weather suddenly became terrible. After we finished our lunch, it started to rain very heavily. We had to spend the whole afternoon walking around the town in the rain. I didn't have an umbrella with me in my bag, so my clothes got completely wet. It is a horrible feeling when you are so cold and wet on a school trip!

Overall, visiting this famous town is a wonderful experience, but you must be ready for the bad English weather. I have one very important piece of advice for future students. You should definitely buy a cheap, bright raincoat before you go on the trip. A good raincoat keeps you nice and dry all day, and the bright colours look really good when you take group photos with your friends!

14   Why did Fiona decide to write this blog?

A to tell other students about a school trip

B to explain why she likes Shakespeare's plays

C to ask her classmates for help with a writing project

15   What did Fiona enjoy most in the town?

A looking at the beautiful old houses

B walking down the small, quiet streets

C learning about the town's history

16   What was the problem on the trip?

A Fiona couldn't buy an umbrella in the town.

B The students had to walk outside in the rain.

C It was too cold to leave the restaurant after lunch.

17   What advice does Fiona give to future students?

A Wear bright clothes so you don't lose your friends.

B Make sure you take lots of group photos.

C Take a raincoat that doesn't cost a lot of money.

18   What is the best title for this blog?

A The best way to learn about an English writer

B A great town to visit, but get ready for rain

C How to take the best group photos on a trip

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Fiona states, "I decided to write this blog to tell other students about our day out," which matches option A. Option B uses a familiar word (Shakespeare), but it is a wrong logic trap because she doesn't mention his plays. Option C is a wrong reference trap; she is writing to other students, but she isn't asking her classmates for help.

15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Fiona clearly says, "The best part of the trip for me was seeing the old houses." This makes option A correct. Option B is a partial truth trap; she did walk down the streets, but she didn't say it was the thing she enjoyed most. Option C is wrong logic; the town is historical, but she doesn't mention learning about its history as her favourite activity.

16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Fiona explains the big problem: "it started to rain very heavily. We had to spend the whole afternoon walking around the town in the rain." This matches option B. Option A is a partial truth trap; she didn't have an umbrella, but the text never says she tried to buy one. Option C is wrong logic; they had lunch, and she felt cold, but they didn't stay inside a restaurant.

17 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Fiona gives her important advice: "You should definitely buy a cheap, bright raincoat". Something cheap does not cost a lot of money, making option C correct. Option A is a wrong logic trap; she suggests wearing bright colours so they look good in photos, not to stop friends from getting lost. Option B is a partial truth trap; she mentions taking group photos, but her actual advice is to buy the raincoat.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog is a review of a school trip to a historic town that was enjoyable but ruined by heavy rain, leading to advice about packing a raincoat. Option B covers both the good parts of the trip and the warning about the weather. Option A is a partial truth trap that only focuses on the Shakespeare connection. Option C is a wrong logic trap that focuses only on a minor detail at the very end of the text.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      A mistake in the forest

Fifteen-year-old George writes about a science trip he went on with his class.

Hi, I’m George and I am 15 years old. Last week, my science teacher took our class on a field trip to a large forest. We didn't go there to look at the trees or the wild animals. We went there to study the ground. Our teacher gave every student some small plastic cups and asked us to collect different types of dirt for our school science project.

I walked around the forest and carefully filled my cups with dark soil and light sand. Then, I used a pen to write information on the outside of each cup. I wanted to remember exactly where I found the dirt. I felt very happy because I had some great examples to show my teacher.

However, when it was time to go back, I had a big problem. I was holding all my plastic cups and walking quite fast to meet my classmates. Suddenly, my shoe hit a thick piece of wood coming out of the ground. I fell over and dropped everything! The cups opened, and all my carefully collected dirt mixed together in the leaves. I felt incredibly upset.

Luckily, two of my friends saw what happened and ran over to help me. We didn't have much time before the school bus left, so we worked really fast to fill the cups with new dirt again. It wasn't perfect, but I was so glad to have something to take back to class. Because of my terrible mistake, I am definitely going to buy a strong bag to carry my things on our next science trip!

14   What did George's class do in the forest?

A They looked for wild animals in the trees.

B They cleaned up some old plastic cups.

C They got pieces of dirt from the ground.

15   Why did George write on his plastic cups?

A He wanted to show his new pen to his teacher.

B He wanted to know where the dirt came from.

C He needed to write down his teacher's examples.

16   What happened to George when he was walking back?

A He fell and lost the dirt from his cups.

B He dropped his cups because his classmates pushed him.

C He lost his shoe in the thick leaves.

17   What did George and his friends do?

A They asked the bus driver to wait for them.

B They quickly put some new dirt into his cups.

C They tried to find his perfect examples in the leaves.

18   What is George planning to do on his next trip?

A use a different kind of cup for his dirt

B take a good bag with him to hold his things

C walk back to the school bus much more slowly

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because George says they went to the forest "to study the ground" and "collect different types of dirt." Option A is the opposite of the truth; the text explicitly says they "didn't go there to look at the trees or the wild animals." Option B is wrong logic; the teacher gave them plastic cups to use, they didn't clean them up from the forest.

15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because George says he wrote on the cup because "I wanted to remember exactly where I found the dirt." Option A is wrong logic; he used a pen to write, but he didn't want to show the pen to the teacher (he wanted to show his examples). Option C is a wrong reference; he had examples to show his teacher, but he didn't write down his teacher's examples.

16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because George says his shoe hit a piece of wood, "I fell over and dropped everything," and the dirt "mixed together in the leaves" (he lost it). Option B is wrong logic; he was walking to meet his classmates, but they didn't push him. Option C is a wrong reference; his shoe hit the wood, but he didn't lose his shoe in the leaves.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says they "worked really fast to fill the cups with new dirt again." Option A is wrong logic; they worked fast before the bus left, but they didn't ask the driver to wait. Option C is wrong logic; they filled the cups with new dirt and accepted it wasn't perfect, rather than trying to find his original perfect examples in the leaves.

18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final sentence, George states, "I am definitely going to buy a strong bag to carry my things on our next science trip!" Option A is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text. Option C might seem like a good idea in real life, but it is wrong logic here because the text never mentions his plan to walk more slowly next time.
