Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

The yoga video call

14-year-old George writes about trying a new activity with a friend.

My name is George, and I am 14 years old. Last week, my best friend Tom and I decided to do some exercise at home. We wanted to try a live yoga class on the internet. We used a video call app on our laptops so we could watch the teacher and see each other at the same time.

On Saturday morning, I put on my favourite sports clothes. I had to move my bed and my desk to make a lot of space on my bedroom carpet. Then, I called Tom on my computer. The yoga teacher on the screen was very friendly. At first, the exercises were quite easy and I felt very relaxed.

But after twenty minutes, the class got much harder. The teacher told us to stand up and balance on one leg. I held my arms high up in the air and tried not to move. Suddenly, the video stopped. My internet connection was very bad, and the teacher's picture just froze on my screen!

I tried to look at my mobile phone to check the wi-fi, but I couldn't keep my balance. I fell over and landed flat on the carpet. Tom watched the whole thing happen on his laptop. He thought it was very funny and started laughing loudly. Soon, I was laughing too.

Because of the internet problem, we didn't finish the rest of the yoga class. We decided that balancing on one leg is too difficult for us at the moment. Next weekend, we aren't going to join a video class. We are just going to do some simple stretches together. It's much safer, and we can still have fun!

14   Why did George and Tom use their laptops?

A to find a good yoga teacher online

B to look at each other during the activity

C to record a video of their exercise

15   What did George do before he called Tom?

A He bought some new sports clothes.

B He made more room to exercise in his bedroom.

C He watched a friendly video on his computer.

16   What was the problem during the hard part of the class?

A George's internet stopped working well.

B The yoga teacher left the video call.

C George's arms were too tired to stay up.

17   Why did George fall over?

A He slipped on his bedroom carpet.

B He was trying to check his phone.

C He was laughing too much at Tom.

18   What are George and Tom planning to do next weekend?

A try a different live yoga class

B practise balancing on one leg

C do some easier exercises without a video

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, George says they used laptops "so we could watch the teacher and see each other at the same time." Option A is wrong because they didn't use the laptops to search for a teacher. Option C is a wrong logic trap; they used a video call, but they didn't record a video.

15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, George says he had to "move my bed and my desk to make a lot of space" before calling Tom. This matches Option B (made more room). Option A is a partial truth trap; he put his clothes on, but he didn't buy new ones. Option C is a wrong timing trap; he saw the friendly teacher on the computer after he called Tom.

16 A - Explanation: In the third paragraph, the text says, "My internet connection was very bad, and the teacher's picture just froze." This makes A the correct answer. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the teacher didn't leave, her picture just stopped moving. Option C is a partial truth trap; he held his arms up, but the text doesn't say they were tired.

17 B - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, George explains, "I tried to look at my mobile phone to check the wi-fi, but I couldn't keep my balance. I fell over". Option A is wrong because the carpet is where he landed, not what made him slip. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the laughing happened after he fell down, not before.

18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, George says that next weekend they "aren't going to join a video class" and will "just do some simple stretches together." This means they will do easier exercises without a video (Option C). Option A is the opposite of what they plan to do. Option B is a wrong logic trap; they decided balancing on one leg is too difficult right now.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    My new fitness tracker

13-year-old Hannah writes about a mistake she made at the swimming pool.

I am thirteen years old and I love swimming. I go to lessons at the local sports centre every Saturday morning. For my birthday last week, my parents gave me a brilliant present. It’s a special fitness tracker watch that you can wear in the water. It can tell you how far you swim and how hard you are working.

I couldn't wait to use it. When I arrived at the pool for my next lesson, I put the watch on my arm immediately. I felt very professional! For the first thirty minutes, we had to swim up and down the pool as fast as possible. It was very tiring, but I was sure my new watch was recording everything perfectly.

During a short rest, I looked at the little screen on the watch to see my results. I was very surprised. The watch said that I was just walking very slowly! Then I realised my mistake. I forgot to press the button to start the 'swim mode'. Because of this, the watch didn't know I was in the water.

I quickly pressed the right button and changed the settings. For the second half of the lesson, we practised diving and swimming underwater. This time, I knew the watch was working correctly.

After the lesson finished, I checked the watch again. I was amazed because it showed that I burned a lot of calories in just thirty minutes! I felt really pleased with my hard work. Next Saturday, I am going to make sure I turn on the swim mode before I even get into the water. I want to see my results for the whole hour!

14   Why was Hannah happy with her birthday present?

A It gives her useful information about her swimming.

B She can wear it at the sports centre every day.

C Her parents bought it from her favourite sports shop.

15   During the first thirty minutes of her lesson, Hannah

A looked at her watch to check her speed.

B felt angry because she was so tired.

C had to work very hard in the water.

16   Why was Hannah surprised when she looked at her watch?

A The screen on the watch was broken.

B She didn't choose the correct program for her activity.

C It showed that she was swimming too slowly.

17   In the second half of the lesson, Hannah

A learned to do different things in the pool.

B spent a long time changing her watch's settings.

C asked her teacher to help her with her watch.

18   What is Hannah planning to do next week?

A try to burn more calories than she did this week

B stay in the swimming pool for a whole hour

C remember to set up her watch before her lesson starts

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Hannah says the watch "can tell you how far you swim and how hard you are working." Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a partial truth trap; she goes to the sports centre, but only on Saturdays, not every day. Option C is wrong logic; the text says she goes to the sports centre, but doesn't mention where her parents bought the watch.

15 C - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Hannah says they "had to swim up and down the pool as fast as possible. It was very tiring." Option C matches this meaning. Option A is a wrong reference trap; she checked her watch after the thirty minutes during a rest, not while swimming. Option B is wrong logic; she was tired, but she didn't feel angry.

16 B - Explanation: In paragraph 3, Hannah explains she "forgot to press the button to start the 'swim mode'". Option B paraphrases this as not choosing the correct program. Option A is wrong; the screen worked fine. Option C is a partial truth trap; the watch said she was walking slowly, not swimming slowly.

17 A - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Hannah says they "practised diving and swimming underwater." Option A correctly matches these different activities. Option B is a partial truth trap; she changed the settings, but did it "quickly", not over a long time. Option C is wrong logic; she fixed it herself and never mentions asking a teacher for help.

18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Hannah says, "Next Saturday, I am going to make sure I turn on the swim mode before I even get into the water." Option C accurately reflects this future plan. Option A is wrong logic; she was amazed by her calories, but didn't say she plans to burn more. Option B is a partial truth trap; her lessons are already an hour long, but her goal is to see the watch's results for the whole time, not just stay in the pool longer.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      Finding out how I sleep

Ian, 15, writes about a new app on his phone.

Hi, I’m Ian and I’m 15 years old. Do you ever wonder what happens when you are sleeping? Last week, I found a new app for my phone called SleepWell. This app is very clever. When you are asleep, it listens to your room and records any noises it hears. In the morning, you can see how well you slept. I wanted to try it because I often feel tired when I wake up for school, and I wanted to know why.

I have used SleepWell for five nights now. Every morning, the app gives me a colourful picture, or graph, on my phone screen. It shows exactly when I was in a deep sleep and when I woke up during the night. I think this information is really interesting. It helps me understand why I feel so tired on some days and full of energy on others.

However, there is one big problem. I share a bedroom with my older brother, Tom. The app records every sound in the room, so it records Tom, too. Yesterday morning, I listened to the sounds from the night before. It was terrible! I had to listen to my brother making very loud noises while he was sleeping. He snores all night, and now I know why I wake up so often!

Overall, I think SleepWell is a fantastic app. You should definitely download it if you want to learn more about your health. But I have one piece of advice for you. If you sleep in the same bedroom as someone else in your family, you probably don't want to use it. Instead of downloading this app, just go to the shop and get some good earplugs so you can't hear them!

14   Why did Ian download the SleepWell app?

A to help him wake up in time for school

B to find out why he is tired in the mornings

C to listen to the clever noises on his phone

15   What does Ian like about the app?

A It wakes him up during the night.

B It gives him more energy for the day.

C The pictures that show how he sleeps.

16   What did Ian find out from the app's recordings?

A His brother makes a lot of noise when he sleeps.

B His brother talks on his phone a lot at night.

C He makes terrible noises while he is asleep.

17   What is Ian's advice for his readers?

A You should download the app to help your family.

B Don't use the app if you share a room with someone.

C Go to the shop and buy a new phone for your family.

18   What is the best title for this blog post?

A A clever app with one big problem

B How to get to sleep with your brother

C The best phone games to play in bed

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Ian says he wanted to try the app "because I often feel tired when I wake up for school, and I wanted to know why." A is wrong logic; he mentions waking up for school, but the app is not an alarm clock to help him wake up. C is wrong logic; the app listens to noises in the room, it doesn't make clever noises for him to listen to.

15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Ian says he likes the "colourful picture, or graph" that "shows exactly when I was in a deep sleep", and he thinks this information is interesting. A is wrong logic; the app shows when he wakes up, but it doesn't wake him up. B is a partial truth trap; the app helps him understand his energy levels, but it doesn't actually give him energy.

16 A - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Ian says he listened to the recordings and heard his brother "making very loud noises while he was sleeping" (snoring). B is a partial truth trap; the text mentions a phone and his brother, but his brother is sleeping, not talking on the phone. C is wrong reference; Ian's brother makes the terrible noises, not Ian himself.

17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Ian advises his readers: "If you sleep in the same bedroom as someone else... you probably don't want to use it." A is wrong logic; he says to download it for your own health, but explicitly warns against using it with family in the same room. C is a partial truth trap; he tells readers to "go to the shop", but they should buy earplugs, not a new phone.

18 A - Explanation: This is a global question. The text reviews a "fantastic" and "clever" sleep app, but focuses heavily on the "one big problem" of it recording his brother's snoring. B is a partial truth; he talks about his brother sleeping, but he isn't giving advice on how to sleep with him. C is wrong because the text is about a health and sleep app, not phone games.
