Test 1
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Will's new board game
Fifteen-year-old Will writes about a fun project he did at home.
Fifteen-year-old Will loves playing board games with his friends. Last month, he decided to make his own game. He didn't want to draw it on a small piece of paper. Instead, he used his laptop and a free design app to create a huge, beautiful map for his new game.
Will spent every evening for two weeks working on his project. He used his computer mouse to draw high mountains, deep rivers, and dark forests. The software had lots of fantastic tools, so it was easy to add lots of small details. When he finally finished the map on his screen, he felt really proud of his hard work.
On Saturday morning, Will invited three friends to his house to play the game. He turned on his printer because he needed to print the big map. However, there was a big problem. The printer suddenly stopped working. A message on the computer screen said there was no more colour ink. Will felt quite worried because his friends were arriving in an hour.
Will had to think fast to solve the problem. He couldn't go to the shop to buy more ink. So, he changed the computer settings and printed the huge map in black and white. Then, he took his old school pencils and carefully coloured the rivers and mountains by hand. The finished map looked absolutely fantastic.
Will's friends arrived and they played the new board game all afternoon. They had a wonderful time, and they said Will's map was amazing. Will is very happy that his game was such a big success. Because he enjoyed the project so much, he is going to make a new game about space travel next month.
14 Why did Will use a design app on his laptop?
A to learn how to draw on a small piece of paper
B to play a free computer game with his friends
C to make a large map for his own game
15 How did Will feel about his project?
A surprised that the software had so many tools
B pleased with what he made on the computer
C bored because he spent two weeks drawing forests
16 What problem did Will have on Saturday morning?
A He was unable to print his map in colour.
B His computer screen suddenly stopped working.
C His friends arrived an hour late to play.
17 How did Will finish the map?
A He went to a shop to buy some more ink.
B He used some pencils to put colour on it.
C He changed the computer settings to draw rivers.
18 What is Will planning to do next month?
A play his amazing board game again
B create a different game for his friends
C travel to space with his friends
Answer Key & Explanations
14 C - Explanation: The first paragraph states that Will "used his laptop and a free design app to create a huge, beautiful map for his new game" (make a large map). A is a wrong logic trap; the text explicitly says he didn't want to draw it on a small piece of paper. B is a partial truth trap; he has a free app and plays with friends, but he used the app to make a board game map, not to play a computer game.
15 B - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that when he finished the map on his screen, "he felt really proud of his hard work" (pleased with what he made). A is a wrong emotion trap; the software had lots of tools, but the text doesn't say he was surprised by them. C is a wrong emotion trap; he spent two weeks drawing, but he wasn't bored.
16 A - Explanation: The third paragraph says the printer stopped because "there was no more colour ink" (unable to print his map in colour). B is a wrong reference trap; a message appeared on the computer screen, but it was the printer that stopped working. C is a wrong logic trap; his friends were arriving in an hour, they were not late.
17 B - Explanation: The fourth paragraph states that Will "took his old school pencils and carefully coloured the rivers and mountains by hand" (used pencils to put colour on it). A is a wrong fact trap; the text says he couldn't go to the shop. C is a wrong logic trap; he changed the settings to print in black and white, not to draw the rivers.
18 B - Explanation: The final paragraph shows Will's specific future plans: "he is going to make a new game about space travel next month" (create a different game). A is a partial truth trap; they played the game and had a wonderful time, but that is not his plan for next month. C is a wrong logic trap; he is making a game about space travel, not actually traveling to space.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Watching trains on my computer
Twelve-year-old Alex writes about a great way to see rare trains.
Hi everyone! I am Alex, and I am twelve years old. My favourite hobby is watching trains. I live near a very busy railway station in my town. Every week, some beautiful, rare trains pass through, and I always want to see them. Many people wait at the station for hours, but I want to write this blog today to share a much better way to track them.
In the past, I used special train timetable apps on my smartphone to find out when the trains were coming. These apps use GPS to track the trains on a map. However, they were often quite bad. Sometimes, an app said a special train was arriving at two o'clock, but it actually arrived at half past one. Because the time on my phone was wrong, I often missed the best trains. It made me feel very unhappy.
Then, a friend from school told me about live railway cameras on the internet. People put video cameras next to the train tracks, and you can watch the video live on your computer screen at home. This is a perfect way to look for trains. When I watch the live video, I can see exactly where the train is with my own eyes. I never have to guess the arrival time anymore.
If you enjoy looking for rare trains, I really think you should stop using mobile phone apps. My advice is to search for live videos online instead. It is the best way to make sure you never miss your favourite engines. Just turn on your computer, watch the video, and enjoy the amazing trains!
14 What do we learn about Alex in the first paragraph?
A He spends hours waiting for trains at the station.
B He lives close to a busy railway station.
C He travels on beautiful trains every week.
15 What was the problem with the train timetable apps?
A They did not give him the correct arrival times.
B They were too difficult to use on his smartphone.
C They did not show the trains on a map.
16 What does Alex like about the live railway cameras?
A He can put them next to the tracks himself.
B He can talk to his school friends on the internet.
C He can see exactly what the train is doing right now.
17 What is Alex's advice for other train spotters?
A Buy a new mobile phone to use the train apps.
B Use the internet to watch real-time train videos.
C Travel into town to see your favourite train engines.
18 Why has Alex written this blog?
A to review a new mobile phone game about trains
B to complain about the people at his local railway station
C to give his opinion on the best way to track trains
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Alex says, "I live near a very busy railway station in my town," which means he lives close to it. A is wrong logic because he says other people ("Many people") wait for hours, but he wants to share a better way. C is wrong reference because he wants to see the trains passing through, not travel on them himself.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Alex explains that the apps said a train was arriving at two o'clock but it arrived at half past one, so "the time on my phone was wrong". This means they did not give correct arrival times. B is wrong logic because he doesn't say they were difficult to use, only that the information was bad. C is a wrong logic/partial truth because the text explicitly says the apps do track the trains on a map.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Alex says "When I watch the live video, I can see exactly where the train is with my own eyes," meaning he can see what it is doing right now. A is wrong reference because he says "People put video cameras next to the train tracks", not that he does it himself. B is wrong reference because his school friend told him about the cameras, but Alex doesn't use them to talk to his friends.
17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Alex's advice is to "search for live videos online instead." A is wrong logic because he specifically says you should "stop using mobile phone apps." C is wrong logic because he is advising people to watch the trains from home on their computers, not travel into town to see them.
18 C - Explanation: This is a global question testing the overall purpose of the text. Alex writes the informative blog to share his thoughts on the best way to track trains (comparing bad apps to good live internet cameras). A is wrong because he is talking about timetable apps and videos, not a mobile phone game. B is wrong because he just mentions that people wait at the station, but he doesn't complain about them.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
The hardest puzzle
Thirteen-year-old Bella writes about a new computer game she played.
Thirteen-year-old Bella loves playing video games on her small tablet. Last month, her older brother bought a new 3D computer game for her. He told her it was the best puzzle game on the internet, so Bella felt very excited to try it. At first, the game was quite easy to play. She finished the first few levels quickly and thought she was very clever.
However, the game soon became much harder. When Bella reached level 10, she just couldn't complete it. The 3D shapes moved too fast on her screen, and she didn't know where to put them. She tried to win the level every afternoon for three days. She felt very annoyed because she usually finishes her video games without any problems. She almost decided to delete the app completely.
Then, Bella had a brilliant idea. She went on the internet and looked for a special gaming website. She found a page where other players talk about the 3D puzzle game. She read a short message from a boy in Canada. He gave some excellent advice about how to turn the shapes on level 10.
Bella picked up her tablet and tried the boy's idea. It worked perfectly! She finally finished the difficult level and then successfully completed the rest of the game. Bella feels incredibly proud of herself today. Because she enjoyed the difficult challenge so much, she plans to download an even harder puzzle game next weekend. She knows she can always look online if she needs more help!
14 Why was Bella excited to play the new game?
A She wanted to play it with her older brother.
B Her brother said it was a very good game.
C She thought it was going to be very easy.
15 What was Bella's problem on level 10?
A The things on the screen were moving too quickly.
B She forgot how to use her small tablet.
C She didn't know how to delete the app from her device.
16 What did Bella do on the internet?
A She sent a message to a boy in Canada.
B She bought a new 3D puzzle game.
C She found some useful information.
17 What happened when Bella used the boy's advice?
A She finished all the levels in the game.
B She needed to ask for more help online.
C She helped another player to win the game.
18 What is Bella planning to do next weekend?
A spend less time playing on her tablet
B help other players on the gaming website
C play a game that is not as easy
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, the text says her brother "told her it was the best puzzle game on the internet," which matches him saying it was a very good game (B). Option A is a wrong logic trap; her brother bought it for her, but there is no mention of them playing it together. Option C uses wrong logic; she thought she was clever because the early levels were easy, but this wasn't why she was excited to start.
15 A - Explanation: The second paragraph explains that "The 3D shapes moved too fast on her screen," which matches the things on the screen moving too quickly (A). Option B is a wrong logic trap; she didn't know where to put the shapes, but she didn't forget how to use her tablet. Option C is a wrong reference trap; she almost deleted the app because she was annoyed, not because she didn't know how to do it.
16 C - Explanation: The third paragraph states that Bella read a message and the boy "gave some excellent advice," which means she found some useful information (C). Option A is a wrong reference trap; she read a message from the boy, but she didn't send one to him. Option B uses wrong logic; she was looking for help for her current game, she didn't buy a new one.
17 A - Explanation: The fourth paragraph says that she "successfully completed the rest of the game," which matches finishing all the levels (A). Option B uses wrong logic; the idea worked perfectly, so she didn't need more help at that time. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the boy helped her win, but she didn't help another player.
18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text states Bella "plans to download an even harder puzzle game next weekend," which matches playing a game that is not as easy (C). Option A uses wrong logic; she enjoyed the game so much that she is getting another one, not spending less time playing. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she knows she can look online to get help for herself, not to help other players.
